7 reasons why the rx8 is hard to turbocharge [BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I talk about the challenges you have to go trough, if you want to turbocharge your Rx8. Turbocharging is possible, and can be reliable too if done right.
Special thanks goes to HIll Bill, for providing most of the info :)

    A lot has changed since this video was made, the factory computer can be tuned to run turbos and people are getting 400+hp out of them reliably. Also, series 2 Rx8 has 3 oil injectors per rotor and even the series one can be tuned via Mazda edit to inject more oil. This has been done on my Rx8 by Roland Wankel Garage. Maybe you should do an updated video on this topic? 👍🏻

    If this is the case I’d love a updated video! Everywhere else says this engine can’t make power reliably at all and to just get a rx7 motor if you’re determined to stay rotary and make power though if you’re not determined to stay rotary everyone says to engine swap it which I personally don’t want to do I want it to be a rotary

    changing the dowels in the housing can stop the apex seals from making contact with the side of the irons and side fumbling of the rotor as you increase the boost. the renesis has a bad habit of twisting itself apart and better dowels can make a huge difference.

    I've been planning on turboing my RX-8 for quite a while, and have solutions to most of these problems. As far as compression ratio and engine wear, I'll just run low boost on the street for everyday driving. I'll only turn it up to higher boost when using race gas on the track to prevent detonation. I'll also go totally overboard with the cooling system to help with heat buildup. I plan on getting an aftermarket standalone ECU for engine management anyways, and because of that it will also free up engine bay space. That will also help with reliability, as boost doesn't usually kill rotaries, bad tuning does. I'll also be able to massively turn up the oil injection and have it draw from a separate resivoir of rotary 2 stroke oil. I have my engine pulled out of the car right now, and with the battery, air box, and ECU removed there would be plenty of room for a small turbo. Just like you said, there's a fair bit of relocation, possibly including water lines, that would have to be done lol. As far as cost, I wouldn't be buying a kit. I have an uncle with some exhaust fabrication equipment and I know how to weld, so the piping could be done for relatively cheap. I'm not going for crazy power anyways, 300 whp on the street is pretty fast already, and on race gas I could probably make 350. I find that even the stock power is all I need for any somewhat legal driving, so any more will mostly just be useful for shenanigans. I'm not going for 0-60 or 0-100 times, I'm more about preserving the nice handling and driving dynamics while giving it a little bump in power to keep up with similar cars in the straights. I am sort of going full on streetable race car build, while still keeping most of the luxuries that I can. There's definitely some serious obstacles and you nailed them all on the head and explained them in a simple and easy to understand, yet in depth way. However, I'm up for a challenge when it'll make my dream car even more amazing. Who knows, maybe some day I'll swap the 13b MSP Renesis for a 13b REW if I really want to chase some huge power.

    Your essay has a lot of information, Lol. By the way, my next project is turbocharger. Could you tell me what is the turbo kit you used? How many miles your rx8 with turbo? Have u tuned by yourself or shop? What is your normal operation PSI? Seems like I have a ton of questions. But if you can answer me, I would really appreciate.

  • @rockymountainrotary2005

    @rockymountainrotary2005

    7 жыл бұрын

    晏晏成博 I haven't actually done the turbo yet, but I'll answer your questions as best as I can based on what I know about it all. I wouldn't have a kit, but I'd custom fabricate everything using a welder and pipe bending equipment. If you're after a kit, I believe the one that is easiest to find is the Greddy kit. It's far from perfect, but is relatively cheap. It'll increase the power but drop the RPM that peak power occurs at. I haven't heard much about the specific longevity of a turbo RX-8, but it would largely depend on how often you hit boost. I would highly, highly suggest a boost controller that you can turn wayyy down for everyday driving, like 2-3 pounds when you don't absolutely need the extra power. That'll help to keep the wear to a minimum. Also, be sure to follow the normal rotary maintenance tips even more thoroughly. I'm going to start with a self done street tune, and just focus on reliability. I would recommend to have a shop tune for ultimate power and safety once it can be afforded. It seems like most kits are in the 5-15 PSI range, I believe that anything above about 10-15 you really have to start looking into high octane racing fuel, depending on how long you want to stay on boost. If you're going to hit boost for a quarter mile and then call it quits for an hour, then you could possibly get away with 15 on pump gas and a very, very good tune. However, if you're going for multiple hot laps around a long race track, even 10 pounds could be a bit much on pump gas. Upgrading the cooling system will help reduce the heat which can cause detonation, and having an excellent intercooler system can make a difference as well. Carbon buildup can be a cause of detonation/pre-ignition as well, so be sure to redline it every drive and cruise over 3000. I would suggest around 3 pounds for everyday driving, and maybe bump up to around 8 for weekend fun. only go to 10 or more if you know you'll need it to win a race, or if you want to show off for a quick pull. Boost can also build up lots of extra heat, and overheating is a guaranteed death sentence for a rotary. Have a coolant temp gauge that has an accurate readout and under no circumstances let it go over 210°F. Try to keep it well below 200. Really the number one piece of advice I can tell you is to have a reliable, safe tune. Rotaries hate lean conditions, and detonation can kill them in a split second, so tuning to absolutely avoid those things is most important.

    [Update to current date] The community progressed quite a lot in the last years, in my opinion turbocharging the Renesis isn't hard, can be cheap if you keep the oem ecu (there are better tools and tuners out there than before) or you can go with an Adaptronic PnP ecu that keeps all electronics working as stock but better management. With a 6 ports engine you can safely reach around 340 whp, which isn't bad and way cheaper than swapping a 13b-rew. That's without touching the engine core, if you prepare the engine for boost you can achieve higher whp and be "reliable".

    Boost doesn't kill your engine, a bad tune does, as for lack of lubrication, if you are tuning the engine, you can always increase the OMP oil delivery. It's not hard it's just has to be done properly. The ECU won't let you do a live tune, you have to reflash, launch it, log and repeat. On a stock rx8 you can squeaze at least 20nm of TQ and around 15HP with a little tune.

    Putting the finishing touches on my turbo rx8 today... I got a used greddy kit off a salvage car with AEM water meth, a whole bunch of gauges, a boost controller and an Adaptronic select ecu for $2800.... considering how cheap these cars are if I can make 275 WHP at ~6-8psi I’d say the horsepower per dollar ratio is pretty rad. Also my mom could give less of a shit if my car blows up lol.

    easiest way to turbo an rx8, single turbo 13b-rew swap with a renesis front cover and modified counter weight. Retains all factory electronics and no wiring changes, then tune with an adaptronic piggyback ecu.

  • @mikel9656
    @mikel96563 жыл бұрын

    you missed probably the biggest reason next to the higher compression... the side seals are thinner on the rotors of the renesis VS 13B REW. this limits the boost due to overheating the seals and them losing their heat treatment.

    Infinitely more complex. Total rewiring, plumbing, mounting brackets, new harness, ECU, etc. But it can be done. An easier option would be either to run low boost (5-7psi) or to have lower-compression rotors install into your Renesis and run 8-12psi of boost. Then it's all about tuning - bad tuning kills boosted rotaries far more than actual boost does.

    Most of the information provided in this video are wrong. Use higher octane fuel and you will be able to run higher boost well to a certain extent at least and you won't be limited by the compression but rather the poor exhaust flow on the Renesis. Use MazdaEdit + Open Port cica 500$ and you can easily remap your ECU to deal just fine with all the fuel needs all the way up to 450 WHP If you are going to Turbo a rotary you should also make sure that you PREMIX + Using the MazdaEdit you can increase the oil injection rate which will yield to a more reliable rotary ( relative ) Engine space well, The RX8 is pretty tight on that however you can still do some top mounts on Left Hand Drive by moving the battery to the boot or you can do a low mount with some kind of persuasion. The rx8club forum is full of successful turbo builds

    Remove leading plugs and pull the fuse for the fuel pump. Roll the engine over for a few seconds. Then, let it sit with the plugs still out. After 10-15 min, put the plugs and fuse back in. Should fire up. Then look at the uprated starter, new ignition, and check compression.

    These days people use rx8 rotors because yes, they are the highest comp, but they are also the lightest, scalloping and milling the apex seal seats will actually allow you to use normal s5/s6 3mm apex seals while having the lightest and highest comp giving a better torque figure Those shitty housings can be replaced with standard s5 ones for a full 50-60hp increase due to exhaust flow, yes you need to pull it apart to do all that but if your getting a rotary to boost and have fun in expect a rebuild, no one should get these cars not expecting one, they will break and they need money

    Detonation is caused by the intense build up of heat in the combustion chamber. You need to do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you suggest in order to get the heat out of the chamber. This is why racing rotaries have forged housings. Housingings with a shit ton of coolant chambers are the only real efficient way to disperse the heat away from the combustion chamber.

    Yusuf Abdul Basith people do this, it's called peripheral port injection. You're correct in assuming that it increases burn efficiency but it doesn't actually reduce heat build up by that much. It burns more completely but the shape of the combustion chamber is at a disadvantage just because of the way it is designed. For a better explanation watch Engineering Explained videos on it.

    It's not all that long of a shot if you have a s2 engine. It usually reeks of oil not turbo charged. with premixing that issue is ruled out. the best thing for a r3 would be a turbo. factors like space are simple if you give it some race treatment. The engine would do good for 9-11 lbs of boost. the downside is just money and skill.

Run it on higher RPM with new maps better cooling if you need based on your trim... New clutch and flywheel for throttle response.. Anyways the list continues on what can be done and stay NA and boost your output but you get the idea of what im getting at FI isn't the only way to boost power

  • @Drivenbymadness

    @Drivenbymadness

    6 жыл бұрын

    A supercharger may help more with the low RPM torque issues, although the RX8 didn't have as bad of a torque issue as the previous rotary cars. It would make it more streetable than a turbocharged RX8, although not by much. The effect is mitigated by the wide RPM range of the Renesis, making it difficult to get a pulley ratio that provides as much benefit at lower RPMs as a supercharger would normally give. To take the most advantage of the characteristics of the rotary engine, a turbocharger would be better overall for performance. Rotaries flow A LOT, both on the intake and exhaust ends (Mazda put a surprising amount of effort into design both on the RX8, and it shows from the Renesis's 54.37% increase in power output over the last NA 13B they made); using a turbocharger fits these aspects of the engine much better. Either way will place additional strain on the engine that it wasn't designed for, in addition to the inherent strain from increased power output :)

    I have an S2. It's not really any better. The things that effect the engine boost ability are pretty much the same on both. You just have better lubrication. So, still not recommended. A supercharger may work better if twin screw/roots style. Only because the boost is carried at all RPM so small gain effects the whole rev band compared to just peak power at the top end. I am actually toying with the idea of putting a supercharger on my 09.
