Love Starfinder. It is a bit crunchy but you can take inspiration from star wars, mech warrior, blade runner, robo cop, guardians of the galaxy, firefly, dune, the expanse, x-com, predator, the aliens franchise, just to name a few. The galaxy is your oyster. Please give it a try and tailor it to suit your needs and taste. Not many content creators providing Starfinder content on a regular basis. I so appreciate the Maple Table for providing content. Thanks Boss.

I'm running Attack of the Swarm later today and man it's chunky but it's so much fun. The versatility with classes and customization in general is so wild. One of my players is an astrozoan witchwarper who decided he wanted to basically be an isekai protagonist small catboy with zero combat potential. He has so far lived up to that, all within the rules, no homebrew. This game is insane and I love it.

Just got my core book two weeks ago and my alien archive last week, I’m currently working on the start of the campaign. My group wanted to try something new at least coming out of the issues with the whole OGL debacle. We’ve got too much into 3.5 d&d to stop entirely but starfinder being similar, led me and another of my group to figure it’d be relatively easy to shift into it for our group as a whole. Looking forward to running, and playing as one of the other members of the group really wants to run the system too, but since I bought the books I’m gonna be running first to get my money out of em xD

The system is really good although there are a few things that I wish they would change. Replacing weapons frequently rather than investing in them like you can in Pathfinder 2e is a bit disappointing. If you are used to ditching weapons then it’s not an issue, if you want to build a legendary weapons that grows with you then the base game doesn’t support that. In general we run shorter sessions so I mod the combat NPCs to hit harder with less health. Which is working and makes the combat grind less, making my PCs feel more heroic. Early session combat before then was leaving my party feeling very inept and unthreatened before this. If you are coming from High Fantasy you need to talk to your players about their exploration aspirations as well. Most games will include a Starship at some point and at that point a wanderlust crew can and will effectively go anywhere! If you are the GM there are a number of free resources to help with this but the scope can be very daunting or liberating depending on how prepared you are.

@@TheMapleTable whoops, didn’t want this to come off as negative. There are loads of things to LOVE about it and it has such a greater range of stories that can be told. It’s also easier to lampoon/critique modern culture in your games if that’s your thing. A great deal of tropes and culture references are easier fits in this setting which resonate more with players. I find the RP opportunities much better because players can visualise technology challenges better than medieval/high fantasy solutions.

Fairly optimistic setting, too. Post-scarcity society but colonial diaspora is a big thing, so only core worlds are Haves, and a lot of the outer areas are Have-Nots. So surprisingly enough, I managed to teach my little brother (who's 12 going on 13) how to make a character for this system, and he's managed to grasp the rules fairly well. Granted not perfectly, him and the rest of my group are moving from D&D 5e which has similarities and differences between, but having a fresh slate like you're saying this kid does may also help. Just be aware that you're gonna need to teach them several things. A few things I'd recommend are as follows. 1.) Use the Hephaistos Starfinder character sheet. It has all the content, you can make 60 characters with it at base, and uses drop-down menus for choices. It also has quick rules descriptions for stuff if you click around the finished sheet, so while the structural parts of combat you'll need to teach, guiding them to parts of the sheet will provide some help. 2.) Start them out with a base or familiar concept. There are a lot of Soldier esque characters in Sci Fi, so think about what they'll want and go from there. Do they like Star Wars? Have them play a Battle Droid esque character with the SRO race, or maybe a Chewbacca like character with the Uplifted Bear race. Maybe they like something like Halo, say a Spartan like Master Chief? Have them play a Human or Human Adjacent race like Android or Aasimar. Keeping a simple concept and then building that concept with them will really help them out. Just don't put them through overchoice (i.e. so many choices that it just gets overwhelming). 3.) For GMing and Player resources needs, use the Archives of Nethys wiki. It has a comprehensive wiki for Pathfinder 1e, Pathfinder 2e, and yes, Starfinder. Just search up the name in Google and you'll be able to find it. Don't recommend it for Pathfinder 1e (there's another wiki I like more as it has the third party content as well), but it's amazing for Starfinder.
