7 Popular Rat Products You Didn't Know Were Dangerous

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

There might be something in your rat cage right now that is actually very dangerous! It's easy to assume that since something is made for rats, it must be okay to use, but it's not always that simple.

Now try and find a product that doesn't contain any GMO foods. I`ve never had a rat get tumors or cancer due to my picky on what I feed then. Search for GMO fed rats and don't be taken in by Monsanto`s 90 day limit showing results are all fine. It`s a lie.

Thank you for the warning about alfalfa. We looked after a couple of rats for one of our friends and she brought some blocks of compressed alfalfa with her. Fortunately neither her rats nor ours (we gave a couple to our rats as well) have suffered ill effects but I shall tell her immediately to get rid of them and not feed alfalfa to her rats.

you probably hear this a lot but you may have saved my ratties lives 💞🐀 we had a little 2 year old (our first ratty baby) pass away a week ago today. it was a very sad and traumatic experience for all of us, especially her sister, because I feel like I could have done more to keep her healthier. ultimately it seems she had a stroke, but prior to that, she had difficulty breathing and would use the bathroom on the upper levels instead of down below. we were using pine bedding, I cleaned the cage once every 2 weeks or so, the bars of the cage were cleaned once a year (which was horrible since we fed fruit and other "juicy" things through the cage) and I only took the ratties out of the cage to give them a bath when I cleaned the cage. I hope you cringed because that was terrible for a rat mommy to do. I promised my little Peanut Butter after her sister Lizzy died that I would treat her better and treat her 2 new friends, Slim and Shady, much better than I had been. I watched all of your rattiepedia videos, deep cleaned and disinfected the cage, and have made commitments to spending more time with them every day and creating a safe and suitable environment for them. in fact, I'm about to head down to pet supermarket right now to return a faulty Kaytee water bottle, one of the edible hideaways (snack shack), baby powder scented spray able shampoo (we're gonna be a coconut oil family from now on), and some potty litter (not sure how that is for them, but if it's scented, forget it). anyway, after this long ramble, I just again wanted to say thank you and I look forward to learning more from the Rat guru :)

It was only two days but I feel so terrible, I immediately threw it all away and replaced it with a cardboard box and old sheet (for bedding) until I can get better stuff. I feel so guilty, I am terrified that just those two days have irreversibly harmed her. I mean she's eating and drinking but ahhhhhh. Thank you for the video, I'm sure she will too.

I really have to thank you for this video Guru. Our oldest girl, who also happens to be my husband's heart rat, was saved because of info in this video. Our girl Sugar who is about a 1 year old now started dropping weight and getting super lethargic. We thought it was just age especially because her face and muzzle greyed kinda quickly too. We were using the Kaytee food brand but switched after seeing this and it saved her life! At least we think so. After a few days on the new food she perked back up, gained her weight back, and even got a little bigger in size! So thank you so very much! Sugar and all her siblings send you all the kisses in thank you. Again thank you, if Sugar passed away this early, my husband would have been devistated. This video is allowing her to life her life to the fullest! I wish I could show a picture of her here for you.

What really sucks is that in some stores all you can find is Kaytee products! Even their water bottles can be pretty bad as the glass ones are prone to growing mold and the plastic ones rarely work properly unless they are in juuuuuuust the right position. Overall, I appreciate how informative this video is, and I even learned a few new things!

Thank you for this! I went to my local petstore last week to buy rat-safe bedding for my rat's toilet space. I did my research beforehand (I'm a new rat owner), but I still decided to ask an employee about their recommendation. She recommended normal cat litter!!!! I asked her if she was sure it wasn't dusty and she said "well yeah, but it's not a problem". I nodded and waited for her to go away and then I grabbed paper pallet bedding (the one that's usually most recommended). I kept thinking like 'come on, lady, you're doing real damage with that advice'.

A very good, informative video. I'd just like to add that people need to be careful, when buying recycled paper bedding, to make sure that the package states that the bedding is "100% recycled paper." There is one brand on the market that adds sweepings from the factory floor, which can contain all sorts of stuff that is not good for rats. The moral is to check everything very carefully.

Dom Pinto it's not your fault at all. it is perfectly fine to get a snack shack for a pet. it will only be harmful if you give it to them a ton. like right after they finish one you get another and another and another.

I have always used old newspapers for beddings, cardboard for caves, and old socks and worn out t-shirts for nest material. I feed my rats whole grains and some times small pieces of fruit as treats. They are *so* picky with fruits, but they like ripe apples now and then.

I know most of these, but the baking soda and snack shacks are new to me! I used to use to so fresh crumble bedding so I'll be switching to something better like the carefresh natural. I knew alfalfa and pine were bad for rats but even though I work at a pet store I had no idea the snack shacks had those because i never really looked at the box. I never purchased any for my rats at least so that's a good thing.

Yes I was considering possibly getting paper bedding but glad I saw your video first. Just brought 2 young rats from the pet expo. And yes I'm planning to use felt cloth for bedding, and a litter box with newspaper and rocks. So yes. I found this video helpful, I'm 62 and this is my first time owning rats, so I've been watching a lot of videos, all my life we lived in homes that had rats as a neusence, never knew I would buy some for a pet. But I held a naked rat at Repticon and fell in love.

@the rat guru I'm not sure if you even use this account anymore but hopefully you will see this eventually. Your videos have been incredibly helpful. My 12 year old daughter wanted rats and She's very thourough, learning as much as she can. I wanted to know as much as possible before saying yes and although some of the products you mention aren't around as much now, you give detailed info to look out for in other products. My daughter is now the proud owner of two adorable baby rats. We are still learning because the only small pet experience we have is with guinea pigs. Thanks so much. I'd love an update after all these years on your little rat colony.

  • @noevilea624

    @noevilea624

They can be bathed in water. just not too often with products that may remove the natural oils from their skin. My new male gets a nice little swim once a day but just with fresh water. No shampoo or anything unless you are actually going to bathe them. Rats are generally terrified of water so just putting you rat straight in without conditioning is more likely to result in your arms being heavily scratched while the rat thinks it`s going to die. I use a couple of drops of " Johnsons baby shampoo " and it works fine. Don't use soaps or medicated solutions as many contain ingredients that are toxic.

  • @ambriadanielsband4132

Umm no Noevilea that's false. They do need to be bathed though! AS needed or every 3 weeks. They get over it, bathing time is never "fun" but the cuddling you do drying them off is fun and watching them popcorn because they feel great afterward is MY reward :)

On a side note, I don't by them very much because I'm so paranoid about what's safe. Are bird toys safe? You mentioned they are smart enough not to eat hay if it isn't disguised as food, so the hanging woven hay birdnest I got them is safe? If anyone has any recommendations for the best and safest rat toys I'd really appreciate some tips!! I think my babies are getting bored.

the one thing that i regret buying for my rats was an alligator sleep hideout meant for ferrets. Thought it would look nice in their cage and they would cuddle up inside it. Not even 12 hours later after putting it in their cage They chewed through it and got themselves stuck inside in fleece lining. fortunately I was there to help and save them. I immediately threw the toy away and felt really bad about making my ratties scared and feel unsafe. Lesson learned.
