My name is Ted Forbes and I make videos about photography. I’ve been making photographs most of my life and I have a tremendously deep passion for photography that I want to share with you on KZread.
The Art of Photography is my channel and I produce photography videos to provide a 360 degree look into the world of making images. We all want to get better so lets do this together!
I make videos covering famous photographers, photography techniques, composition, the history of photography, philosophy and much more.
I also have a strong community of photographers who watch the show and we frequently do social media challenges for photographers to submit their own work. I feature the best and most interesting on the show when we do these so come check it out and get involved!

For those who missed out on Ernst Haas's Color Correction, I can strongly recommend the recently released 'New York in Color 1952 - 1962' by Prestel. Beautiful work, and perfect to enjoy with some black coffee and some Brubeck, Art Blakey and Davis on the speakers.
I'm a member of a forum (FADU) that has a picture exchange. It is run once a month most of the year except Christmas and summer holiday time. When it is extended to two months this allows members to take part , giving them time to do all the other stuff as well. I will add that all the exchange prints have to be produced in the darkroom. So your idea of monthly for your assignment is inspired.
My vote is once a month and a January assignment. Thanks for all that you do!
YES to the monthly schedule. I think all the analog guys will love monthly photo assignments. I also believe that making them monthly will help all of us come up with better ideas before we actually go out and shoot!

Monthly photo assignments are a good idea! I'm still working on last year's but I love the process. Thanks for such great content!
Hi Ted - I think once a month is a good change to photo assignments - not as rushed and really gives us a chance to think through it. Looking forward to another great year - love the video's!
love the idea of monthly rather than every 2 weeks for the assignments
I vote monthly! February is good to start.
I saw your video on Irving Penn and when I heard that there was an exhibition in Paris about him, I was very curious to see the prints. So I travel to Paris quite especially for this expo and I absolutely loved it, very inspiring! And that's because of your channel! Thank you so much for your show and the quality of the content!
Congrats on the 10yr anniversary that's awesome, I've learned a lot so far from your channel keep it up, monthly photo assignments sounds good too and I'm for the January start up 🤓🤓
Yes to art assignment in January, starting Art Assignment is my New Years resolution, let's get started.
I love how you used to take a single photograph and analyze it, maybe you could do more of those.
Yes to monthly photo assignments!! Been meaning to jump in on the photo assignments, mostly for pushing my photographic creativity, and monthly will make it easier for me to join in! Thanks for all the work you do on this channel!
Color photography icons for me: Herzog, Eggleston, Hass, Ghirri, Leiter, Meyerowitz, Sternfeld, Callahan.
I love the idea of a monthly schedule! I also would love a January assignment
I had to stop in the middle of this video episode to thank you for this content you have been so faithfully presenting us. I have gone from an occasional viewer to a “hooked” viewer in a short amount of time. I love the look and discussion of gear but what this show has that no other show brings us ( along with a knowledgeable and genuine person as a host!) is this discussion of “the art of photography “, thank you so much for being an oasis in the world of photography techland.
I always follow your recommendations on photo books, and thanks to you my library is getting so much better in terms of quality. My favorites are the Irving Penn catalog, the Saul Leiter, the Lartigue, The Radical Camera and The Decisive Moment. Thank you very much!
I loved your book choices. You introduced me to Saul Leiter in 2017 (I really like his work and philosophy), and so much more. This is what sets you apart in my mind - the fact that you promote the work of other great photographers.
Happy 10 year anniversary! Thank you for all the effort you put into the show, my partner and I love it. I vote yes to monthly photo assignments and to starting in January. I think it would be cool to have an image per month to celebrate 2018 and the anniversary of your show.
Congrats on making it 10 years mate! Love your videos! Your passion and enthusiasm is inspiring.
Congrats on your tenth year! I agree that once a month is good. It gives more time to think about and plan a photo. I think an assignment in January would be nice... perhaps a choose your own assignment. We can choose an assignment from the past and either redo to make better or a completely new one that was enjoyable to create.
Yes to the monthly photo assignments, great idea. Happy to start in Feb which would make more sense.
Congrats on 10 years! Wow. Also, you’re only 10 away from 400k! So cool. Yes to monthly photo assignments with a video from you halfway through the month with direction tips, examples etc... let’s start in January
HAPPY 10 YEARS!!!! I dig the monthly photo assignments, that would be much easier for everyone :)
Thank you, Ted, I think monthly assignments will be much easier to follow (at least for me!). Also, as much as I am rearing to go, it's fine to wait until February for the next photo assignment. Cheers.
Congratulations, happy youtuberaversary! I agree, monthly is better.

Monthly is a great idea. I vote also for this month. Thanks for your work that you doing for us!
YES, I'm on board with starting photo assignments off with January. Can't wait for what's coming up next
Congratulations for the milestone, Ted! Monthly challenges and January included, as well. Not sure about others, but in monthly challenges, I let my ideas marinate and try to produce something towards the end of the month.
The monthly photo assignments seem like a perfect interval. YES to a January assignment - I'm extremely busy April thru November, so there are only a few months I could do each year ..... I'd hate to lose one of those months.
Love the channel. One a month is absolutely perfect! It gives us and you more time! January works for a start month fo’sho!
Yes! One photo assignment sounds like a swell idea!
Love the idea of the photo assignments on a monthly bases. Even uploading on a different day is totally cool. Possibly doing some podcast of critiquing the images or technical skills and what makes photos amazing. I seem some of the images and have always seen that photos look great but i dont know what makes them great which makes it very difficult how to learn from them to improve. So a longer form video talking about images podcast, minimum editing. Then the usual video that you do at the end of every photo assignment. Good luck for 2018, on a side note, really want you to do some collaboration with Jared Polin from FroKnowsPhoto in their RawTalk Podcast or any other photography topics.

1 photo assignment a month would be great!
Monthly is great and starting in Feb is great too. Tbh Ted, you do a lot of work.. i used to be a video editor and i know how much time goes into making videos. Thanks for even doing these!
+1 for the monthly assignments. Suggest doing one for January so there is a full set of 12 for the year.
Happy new year and congrats on the anniversary! I often see your assignments and want to get involved, but get pulled away by something, so monthly would make it easier for me to participate. Also, I often can think of a shot I already have that would fit a category. I know you want to make it about getting out and shooting, but I wonder if it might be worthwhile allowing older shots to be included somehow. Perhaps a separate category?
Yes monthly assignment would be great and will is the chance to concentrate more on quality even for full day working people! Start in February is fine. Cheers Wolfgang
Thanks Ted for the support. My new book will be out in February, will send you a copy!

Tom Barr Thanks Tom. Appreciate it!
the man is back!
AOP episodes that cover an artist via a book have been amongst my favourites on your show. I've learned from experience that when you do an end of year top books show it's best to be quick to secure copies of the books covered.

...also, it's interesting about the Colorists. The more I see their work the more I'm drawn to it. Several years ago you did a piece on Saul Leiter's 'Early Color' and that book was IT for me. Letter, and others, new why they were using color when they did and used it effectively. Ernst Haas is great. Have you featured Keld Helmer-Petersen yet?

PPS... how about an episode reprising the whole subject of the history of color in the art of photography on The Art of Photography?
I like monthly assignments strting with January. Thanks for the videos!
Hey Ted, I live in Fort Worth as well and I think it’d be pretty cool if sometime this year you could organize a photo meet/ photo walk around Fort Worth. Downtown, The Modern, stockyards, or anywhere else 😎
Yes, a PA once a month would be great and yes, one for January would be great too. and congratulations on 10 years of an amazing show! At least a few times ten years more OK? All the best!
Yes, a longer assignment time would be great. Feel free to vary the time too. (e.g. more complex assignments can take longer)
Yes, monthly assignment is way more convenient. Especially for those of us who don't get much time to go out in a week.
Congratulations on 10 years. Yes to monthly schedule and starting in February sounds a better plan.
I definitely vote for monthly assignments, announce the assignment, maybe give three weeks to submit, then the last week to check the work and assemble the video.
Happy new year, and happy 10th year on the platform! :) You are a great inspiration to me, and one of the reasons I want to learn photography at a university. P.S I agree with the monthly timing. I have only participated in one photo assignment, but I'm looking forward to do more of them. :)
Huge happy new year and congratulations on meeting this milestone... Absolutely love your channel. Sorry did I miss the assignment for January? I'm not sure there was one set but would be eager to know!! Many thanks.
Monthly photo assignments please. And start with January. Thanks for all you do.
Monthly photo assignment? Great! As a father, its always hard (but manageable) to find some ten minutes to think about the assignment and do some photos... Having the opportunity to do it maybe 3-4x for 10 minutes will improve quality for sure!
Thanks, Ted. Once again your example inspires me to deepen my pixels.
Ted - great update. Monthly Photo Assignments works and starting in February is a good idea. Sorry I missed you during your NYC trip but as always, thanks for your information and inspiration.
YES, monthly is a better time frame. I am just getting back into photography after taking a many year hiatus. Just starting to get out of auto and learning as I go. The Photo Assignments is just what I needed to get out and shoot with a purpose, instead of just 'taking snapshots'.
Going to have to say I would like to see a January photo assignment. I've actually been working on trying to take at least one shot a day during the new year. Some are junk, others have been pretty neat.
Thank you for doing photo assignments. I have a pretty busy work schedule so I don't always get to play along, so the idea of making it monthly works much bettr for me and it sounds like for you too. I'd be up for a Jan assignment Thanks again.
Lovely episode Ted. I love photo assignments so having only one a month is a bummer but it does make more sense that way. It will also probably improve the work you get sent in as well. More time to think and review ideas.
Congratulations on 10 years of The art of Photography! Have a great Year and thanks for everything!
Wow... those are some amazing photographers.
BIG YES to monthly schedule, this way it will be possibleto ,more easily participate with small budget and analogue photography! Love the Idea!
Monthly Photo Assignment definitely is better. Lets do one in January! Looking forward to it!
Yes, monthly is good. I'd wait until February were it me. As a newbie, I'm looking forward to participating.
I would definetly opt for a january assignment! Happy new year Ted! Keep making your awesome show :)
Wow Ted, happy anniversary. Time has flown by still here, still watching!
Yep, monthly assignment sounds good. Of course, I haven't participated yet so my opinion might not carry much weight, but I plan on it this year.
YES to January assignment. Also monthly mode is the first real chance for me to participate in assignments.
Somewhat new viewer...monthly sounds great! I have limited time to shoot assignments, so the new schedule sounds awesome! I love what you do, keep up the awesome content. Unlike most KZread photography channels, you actually challenge me.
Happy New Year,Ted, and happy You Tube anniversary! Yes for monthly photo assignment, I think it is perfect. I'd like having the January one as well.
Monthly assignments would be awesome! I've been meaning to jump in since getting back into photography six months ago, but juggling work and the shorter window proved impossible. I'd love to kick off this new schedule in January, so please fire one out to us as soon as you can!
I've never done a photo challenge but I've always wanted to so I think that once a month would be a lot more doable! Congrats to 10 years!
Once a month and let’s start with this month
Great selection of books. Luigi Ghirri is one of my all time favourite photographers.
Congrats on 10 years Ted! Thank you. I vote for January and please remind me (us) how/where to submit.
TED thank you for the ten years of hard work. Your videos are great and useful to wwatch. I learn something new every time. Cheers friend.
I have only entered one assignment but enjoyed doing it but I was looking at old work, nothing wrong with that, a monthly one would be much better as like many others probably think it will give you time to put thought into it and hopefully get out there and shoot new work.
Love the books ❤ And please yes...one photo assignment a month will keep us going!
I co-sign the once a month assignment schedule Ted! And YES a January assignment is NEEDED.
You run one of, if not my most, favorite photography channel on youtube, but I would like to see more of your videos in following categories (sorted in order) on a regular and more constant and for us consumers known schedule, maybe every 5 days one ;-) Categories 1. History of photography 2. Photo Assignments 3. Artists / Books presentations 4. Styles / Types of photography 5. Some gear reviews / tips and tricks for editing 6. Trips to exhibitions / Travel I can only imagine that each episode is a lot of work for you, but just take this as some kind of feedback / wishlist from me. Keep up your excelent work. Greetings from Hamburg/Germany
Monthly is great. I've always wanted to participate but have always felt too busy to find time with 2 kids, work and remodeling a house. Thanks Ted. I'm good with waiting or starting now.
I guess once every month is good for photo assignments, and if you can try to fit in more submissions it would be great, i mean because its a month not a week, its logical to have more submissions, that way photographers will have enough time to focus and work and get the best for the assignment, and they will have a better chance of getting their work featured. i submitted my work twice so far, looking forward to submit to every assignment now! and i wish to produce good enough images to be featured in the final video. Thanks Ted!
nice one to put some the mailtime favorite books as your favorites of 2017, monthly would be better I would think.. congrats with the anniversary and wish you all the best for the ones to come!
Yes! Monthly! I never feel I have a chance to participate.
1 a month would be great. also a january assignment would be great as well if you are able to get one out
Epic deeper pixels! Yeehaw! Wait until February, give you a break. I like the monthly assignment idea.
Once a month is fine and yes do January......by Dec 2018 there will be 12 assignments. I always thought the turnaround time was fast, not for us, but for you....sorting through all the photos on, at minimum 3 social network platforms.....that is just too tight.
I’ve always wanted to join the photo assignment but I always miss out! So I think this type of schedule will allow me to join!
I prefer more assignments but if it is not working for the majority... I guess monthly will do
Monthly lots better here, through the winter I barely see daylight, also better for film people. Happy Anniversary !! Another 10 years please pretty please :-)
Hello Ted. I'm a new subscriber. I've been doing photography for a little longer than you've been doing youtube videos, but have only just started tapping into youtube for inspiration which makes me quite late to this particular party but it seems to still be in full swing. I'd like to join in with the assignments and monthly sounds like a nice schedule as I'm currently studying for a Masters but within each month I should be able to find enough time. I love that you still do letters so I will try and send you one this week and introduce myself if nothing else. Congratulations on the big milestone, I look forward to this next year, your eleventh.
I vote monthly! February is good to start.Looking forward to another great year
The Artist Series is my favourite section in your channel , could you make a program about contemporary photographers? Thank you
Once a month, excellent change and I vote for a January Assignment to have the 12 assignments of this year ❤️ Thanks for everything
One of the main reasons I've never attempted the photo assignments was the waaaaaaay-too-fast schedule. Once a month would be much more preferable. Happy Anniversary, here's to the next ten!
HNY, Ted! Monthy sounds perfect & let's start NOW 😃.
Yes to the schedule and start in February. When are you doing a segment on NASH Editions?
1. I think the one assignment per month is a great idea! 2. Would love one for January too (AND the totally cool one for February)!
Monthly assignment is good! 👍 Yes to January assignment.
I missed you. I wasn't getting your videos in KZread so I searched for Art of Photography. I like this idea about uploading photos from a photo assignment you offer, how does that work again? One of my favorite color photographers was Pete Turner. I like a lot of saturation in color he seemed to express that. He might be too commercial for you though. I also like working with primary colors against a neutral background. I think simple primary colors shout out color. (i.e. primary colors as in pigments: Red, Blue, & Yellow)
love your channel mang
