    Its important to know that not every guinea pig will like to be pet. I have a boy who trusts me a lot, does all kinds of tricks and even runs up to me for food or attention. But he does not like to be pet. i can touch his face a bit, but thats about it. Some just dont like the feeling of being touched. He also taught the younger piggies to come beg for treats and how to go to certain places (like under my desk) and then beg in a certain way. He taught one of the young ones to nibble my feet for a treat 😂😂

    That's true! It all depends on their preference. Some may learn to love it some will never like it at all no matter how gentle we are to them.

    Respect is earned!! I think the biggest thing people need to understand is that as prey animals, their brains are wired to be afraid of everything because everything is a potential predator or threat. As their human you need to prove to them that despite your size, you are not a threat. Speak softly, move slowly and offer food, their stomachs override their fear

    There was one Thing you said, which is the most important. PUT YOURSELF IN THE POSITION OF A GUINEA PIG! Can't be said often enough.Generally words to live by. The the perspective of the other side.Often that really helps. And although piggies are very friendly, courious and forthcoming beings, they are not like dogs at the end of the food chain. They are prey.They have to be carefull.Buti like he said.Take the time it will be worth it. Very good video by the way.Includes a lot of very important informations. (And cute piggies, of course) Keep up the work Enrich the lives of piggies by teaching the their hoomans. Wheat, wheak

    My pair of girls, when I adopted them they were already two years old and had been with someone else, so maybe they were used to people. But I started hand feeding right away, and would pick them up for quality time (I can't do floor time where I am because there are too many things they would get into.) Within a few weeks, they were more than happy to crawl on me, fall asleep around me etc. One gives me tons of little kisses but the other has only done that a few times.

    Nice warm-hearted, instructive video. I really enjoy seeing the piggies running loose! I don’t have guinea pigs, but I assume that sudden movements and noises would frighten them and not be conducive to their psychological comfort. Also, that people have to understand that they are rodents, not cats or dogs, and they can only behave in their own way, at their own level. I suppose that one challenge with letting them out of the cage is: the (GP) toilet question.

    Should I do floor time with a guinea pig thats scared and i only had for 2 weeks and he doesnt really let me catch him in the cage? I sometimes get him if he goes in his igloo hut.

  • @GuineaDad

    @GuineaDad

    It's great that you're concerned about your guinea pig's well-being and trying to make the right choices for their comfort and trust-building. Here are some tips on how to approach floor time with a scared guinea pig: Start Slowly: Given that you've only had your guinea pig for two weeks and he's still getting used to his new environment, it's important to take things slowly. Guinea pigs can be naturally skittish, especially when they are new to a home. Secure the Environment: Ensure the area where you plan to do floor time is secure, so there are no hazards or places where your guinea pig can hide too well. Make sure other pets are out of the room. Use a Playpen or Enclosure: A small playpen or enclosure can be helpful for floor time, as it limits their area to explore initially and makes them feel safer. You can gradually expand their play area as they become more comfortable. Offer Treats and Positive Reinforcement: Guinea pigs can be motivated by food. Try offering small treats (like fresh veggies) to encourage your guinea pig to come out. Use a gentle and calm voice to talk to your guinea pig during floor time to associate your presence with positive experiences. Respect Their Space: If your guinea pig hides in his igloo hut, that's okay. Don't force him to come out. Let him come out at his own pace. You can place the hut in the playpen and sit quietly nearby, giving him time to explore when he's ready. Use a Cozy Blanket or Towel: You can try gently placing a cozy blanket or towel over your lap and letting your guinea pig sit on it while you're sitting on the floor. This can help them get used to your presence. Consistency is Key: Spend time with your guinea pig daily, even if it's just sitting nearby and talking to him. Consistency can help build trust over time. Be Patient: Building trust and confidence in your guinea pig can take time. It's essential to be patient and not rush the process. Remember that each guinea pig is unique, and it might take longer for some to become comfortable with handling and floor time. Always prioritize your guinea pig's comfort and well-being. If your guinea pig continues to be very fearful or stressed, consider consulting with a veterinarian or an experienced guinea pig owner for further guidance.

    I started to back to square one which i have to leave her alone for day, and often let her out everyday from her cage to have space. Ever since that day happened i never want to leave her in the living room with windows open so she can enjoy our plants, thats cause my little brother would sneak out from the room during his online class, which i learned he would disturbed her and try to feed bread again or opening the cage. So now, shes been running around in my room freely and would go to her cage back and fort whenever she's hungry, since she mostly spend time under my bed and sometimes under my table.

    Similar to gaining piggie trust, when I got my budgie, I left my hand outside of her cage with food, and stayed completely still for almost 20 minutes before she even tried to get close. And then when she did, I stayed still for another 30 min as she explored. But now she flies to me 🥲💗
