More information about the video content bellow:
1. The Turks and Caicos Islands (also known as TCI) are two groups of tropical islands in the Atlantic Ocean located southeast of the Bahamas, north of Haiti and east of Cuba about 600 miles from Miami. As a British Overseas Territory, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is the chief of state of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
2. The Turks and Caicos became a British overseas territory in 1973, but the islands have a complicated history with control passing from Spain, to France, to Great Britain during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. In 1799, both the Turks and the Caicos island groups were annexed by Britain as part of the Bahamas. For many years the islands were governed indirectly through Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Jamaica. When the Bahamas gained independence in 1973, the Turks and Caicos Islands received their own governor and have remained a separate autonomous British Overseas Territory ever since.
3. There are two stories as to how the islands got their name. Many believe that the Turks in Turks and Caicos is derived from the indigenous Turk’s Head “fez” cactus, a small stubby cactus capped with a spiny structure resembling a Turkish Fez hat, and the Lucayan term caya hico, meaning ‘string of islands.’ In the other version, Islamic corsairs or ship raiders in the Mediterranean were often referred to as “Turks”, and the term became a synonym with pirate. Early map makers combined this with a version of the Lucayan word cayo hico meaning ‘string of islands.’ In other words, they were warning that the Turks and Caicos were islands with pirates, which they were for several decades around the turn of the 18th century.
4. Although the islands are surrounded by ocean water, there are no lakes or rivers in the Turks and Caicos. Islanders depend on rainfall to collect fresh water.
5. In 1917, Canadian Prime Minister Robert Borden suggested that the Turks and Caicos join Canada, but this suggestion was rejected by British Prime Minister David Lloyd George. Since 1917, the Turks and Caicos Islands have considered joining Canada on three additional occasions, in 1974, 2004, and as recently as 2014.
6. Cockburn Town is the capital city of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Historic 18th and 19th century Bermudian architecture line Duke and Front Streets in the town.
7. Though the islands of Turks and Caicos are small and can barely be seen on a map, the coastlines are known to span up to 400 kilometres! That’s 400 kilometres of white sandy beaches and azure waters! With a warm climate, lying around the beach all day does sound like the most ideal vacation. Water temperatures are said to be as warm as a bathtub!

I just visited T&C in August 2023. A local young lady told me that they were also once a part of The Bahamas, but this video did not expound on that fact. Such a beautiful, relaxing, and friendly place!

The Turks and Caicos Islands would join Canada using the same provisions in the Canadian Constitution that were used for P.E.I, B.C., and Newfoundland. However, before 1982, Canada needed Westminster support. Since the patriation of the Canadian Constitution in 1982, that is no longer necessary. There would be no change of Head of State, if the Turks and Caicos Islands were to become part of Canada. Both the U.K. and Canada are constitutional monarchies, ruled by Queen Elisabeth.

Would it make more sense for Turks and Caicos to join Bahamas instead of Canada? The islands are just a southeastern extension of the Bahama Archipelago.

  • @SebastiansFacts

Probably, but.. Canada is a lot richer and more powerful than the Bahamas, so it's thus more tempting to join them. On the other hand Canada doesn't have any territories outside the mainland, which is strategically a disadvantage (at least when it comes to world politics/economics). Plus Canada is cold, and the Turks and Caicos are definitely not.. so, you get the idea :)

When you talk about the T&C and this wacky Canadian idea that comes up from time to time of "annexation", you do not mention the agreement of the government in London, which is perhaps the most important of all. Believe me, Ottawa would back away from any potential punch-up with the UK - particularly over such a half baked idea.

we dont desalinate water. Where I lived in South Caicos they have wells and huge concrete room like structures built in the ground with just the waist high exposed out the ground and my Grandma said they used to dip water out the tanks and wells with small buckets tide to long ropes and poured them into bigger buckets. Salt was dried in giant ponds and racked them during slavery. mary prince talked about it in her autobiography .
