noticed a mistake. the sorting hat was not made the year hogwarts was founded. each founder hand picked their house students for a number of years after the founding then later created the sorting hat as the long term solution before salazar slytherin departed the school.

@@TheWizardingCo I can tell you more of this, because as a potterhead i have been reading about this too. Fly-By, is right, they created the sorting hat, for af long term solution, till when they all where gone/dead. So the students of Hogwarts could still be sorted into they're right house. All four of the founders, did enchantments on the hat, so the value of the students that they picked when they were alive, and also the value they prefered of the students, like ambition and bravery and such, will be the value of the sorting of the next generations of thousand of students to come! :D

I thought the same. The founders were the ones to choose for a number of years who goes in what house, but once they realized they wouldn't be there forever they all put some magic into Godric's hat and boom sorting hat

Close They HAND SORTED NOT PICKED the book and quill were made some time before Hogwarts was finished so before the school even opened. That's how the students were picked. The HAT only SORTED them the students. THE SORTING HAT Legend had it that the Sorting Hat was sewn roughly one thousand years ago and began as a normal hat belonging to Godric Gryffindor. Great question! I know that there are conversions from regular monetary notes to Wizarding money. I think it’d require them to visit Gringotts and exchange the money/open a vault on their first trip.

I read the video title and had to click. Being a Potterhead. (Can happily say I knew them all) The Sorting Hat was after the school was founded. As the founders knew they could not live forever to appoint people to their houses. It was not just Muggle Born students who would get Admission Letters delivered by professors or Hogwarts staff. Notably Remus Lupin had his 'delivered' by Dumbledore along with reassurances that were made that he and the staff would accommodate Lupin's affliction so that he could attend Hogwarts. It is likely other such meetings between Hogwarts staff and half-blood (or possibly even some purebloods) have occurred through history of the school.

The facts regarding muggle born students being notified of their acceptance to Hogwarts and Helga Hufflepuff wanting to provide a safe haven for house elves is pretty common knowledge, well before Hogwarts Legacy was thought of. Also, Hogwarts Legacy also has moments where it's shown that Salazar chose to leave Hogwarts of his own accord. The other founders didn't make him leave (And from what we know, I doubt they would have been able to force him out) however they also didn't make it easy. There's always conflict in any relationship - but ultimately I don't think it was the students Salazar didn't trust. It was the fear of knowing what could happen if Hogwarts was exposed, knowing what the muggles could and would do to them. Adult witches and wizards would be able to find a way to survive. Untrained children who had less control of their magical abilities were at much greater risk and I think that's what truly frightened him.

@@TheWizardingCo They'd probably heard stories from older students about his tendencies towards pureblood supremacy, and I doubt he'd hide it either. At the same time I don't think Salazar wanted the students to actually die - he just didn't want them at Hogwarts. Makes me wonder what he'd think of what Voldemort did.

@@TheWizardingCo A theory I came up with (That I'm trying to work into a fanfic) is that the basilisk was meant as a last line of defense should Hogwarts be attacked. However because Salazar's intentions were over time viewed so differently that people came to believe the monster was there purely to harm students.

yeap because of magical laws food cannot be conjured (Gamp's Law). Because of that house elves made it in the kitchen beneath Great Hall with the same amount of tables arranged the same way and when the time comes up food was move/teleported to the dinning tables in Great Hall.

Where is it stated in the books that new muggle students get visited by a professor? The only reason I see is Harry didnt't get to open his letter because of his aunt and uncle. Tom Riddle was an orphan so there was no other option. What about Hermione for instance? I can't recall a single moment where they talked about a professor visiting her before she went to Hogwarts.

As you can think about it it was the only logical option. As far as I remember person responsible for this task was Minerva McGonagall (at the time of Harry Potter) but Hagrid was sent to deliver Harrys letter.

With the acceptance letter only providing the acceptance and shipping list, a Muggle-Born student would have to have some context to get going. Also it’s never 100% stated, but I believe McGonagall was the one who visited Hermione.

Okay but here's a question. How do they fit the 800 students (The number given by the writer herself) onto a train? In the movies the train has 5 cars (In some movies it only has 4), and while they vary a bit (Such as the car Draco was in during Half-Blood Prince which seats less than the rest), each one seems to have 8 cabins in them, each seating 6 students maximum. That's already only enough space for 240 students. Thing is, not only have we seen Professors take the train to school, such as Remus in Prisoner of Azkaban. Yet still it gets worse... Because Harry, Ron, and Hermione seem to always be able to have a cabin to themselves, meaning the cabins aren't even full. In the very first movie, Harry was completely alone in one cabin until Ron came along. Even when Hermione came along she didn't stay, meaning there's enough space for all the passengers that 2 people have a cabin to themselves. Even in Half-Blood Prince, the car Draco is in, there are empty seats. Now I know most people's answer to this would be... magic. 'It's bigger on the inside'. But that's simply not true. The train was built by muggles, and is in fact just, a train. You can clearly see from the outside to the inside from multiple angles, and at different times were shown students walking down the corridors showing how long each car was. So maybe I'm crazy but... this train can't hold 800 students. In fact there only seem to be like 200 on the train at any given time. So how do the other 2/3 of the students get to Hogwarts? Or is the answer perhaps, just as simple as "The movies just made the train only have 4-5 cars depending on the movie because it looked better than a train with some 20ish cars."

That’s a wonderful point! My guess is that it’s similar to Newt’s briefcase. From the outside it’s a simple object. But it can be expanded and built on from the inside based to the needs of the individual. If I remember correctly, you can enchant regular objects with magical abilities like expansion later, so that’d be my main guess. But why there were empty seats on a train that should be 800+ students? Either Magic or they wanted it to look nice on camera :/ Love this question though! Thank you for making me think on it!

@@TheWizardingCo That's where I think most people's first thoughts would go to, is just 'it's magic'. But as I recall, the books specifically mentioned at times Harry walking through the train, and mentioned that there were 7 cars, and all the ways it described the train suggested it is in fact, just a normal train. Maybe there's some other way students get to Hogwarts in the modern day. Just would be a bit odd for both Ron who is basically the lower class of the Wizarding world... AND Draco to both take the train if there's alternative methods. I think the answer probably unfortunately comes down to, they didn't know how many students went to the school when they made the movie, they just did a guesstimate of around 200 students (Which is what some people believe the number is), and said, yeah, train for about 240 students, 200 attend... works out. And really, there is no big secret answer beyond that.

I believe it was McGonagall who visited Hermione. But it wasn’t a recruitment. They just provide the acceptance letter.

Well your forgetting that Harry’s name was put down to attend Hogwarts from birth, most likely by his parents. I imagine those of magical families can put their children down on a list to be accepted when the time comes

As much as I’d think that, from what I’ve read, the Quill and Book are the only ways to attend Hogwarts. Most Magic’s families have their children’s names added to the list automatically. But some take time.

It does explain it though because the Quill and Book put the child’s name in for acceptance, not that they HAVE to go to Hogwarts. Also Durmstrang has different rules for acceptance as well.

The Quill and Book are the only option and it writes name in the book when first signs of magic reaveals in wizards or muggles. For example squibs are not wrote down and they are born in magic families.

@@TheWizardingCo Agree. But the explanation of the HW express seems simplified to start. There are so many parallels between muggle technology and magic throughout the HP lore that I was disappointed that was not abridged in a video with this title. Ex. Wands vs firearms, floor powder vs internet... I could go on but it's 0230 am here. Oh and I would have to Google a few translations but I'm pretty sure avada kadavra would be loosely translated to make/appear corps. So technically it would fall under a transfiguration spell. Maybe a future video... Anyway have a good one ;)
