She sold them ALL and only got like $5,000 for the lot and I still wake up in the middle of the night crying. It was such a loss, I've never gotten back into collecting. It was such a loss that it broke a 50-year family tradition of record collecting. Just writing this brought tears to my eyes.

Same here, sold mine, before that I had all my Golden Age rap LP's/12" stolen apart from like 1/5 of 400-odd records, this is like '99; I fucking weep sometimes , I wonder if that's why I don't collect rap anymore...I had some great stuff, lots of Cold Chillin', lots of Def Jam (of course), loads of Wyld Pitch, Rawkus, Fondle 'Em, stuff from when British hip-hop got REALLY fucking good; crazy white labels of Stretch and Bobbito freestyle sessions, Gang Starr "So What's Up" white label....only rap I buy now is RTJ and some Mello Music stuff. I wouldn't wish death on anyone but the guy who stole 'em rolled a seven a long time ago; karma's a bitch (he did way worse stuff than steal a bit of vinyl, btw! Not to me, to others)....I decided to start collecting again just before the lockdown, concentrated on my fave artists that I lost when I sold, got everything I had and more, AND discovered a couple more new (ish) bands in the process that I've gone kind of crazy for. I'm in an area that I cannot get anymore records. I had to sell some of my records. Some that I could have kept. I refuse not to get records cause buying records is my hobby.

So, I'm not a vinyl collector (KZread algorithm brought me here), but I *am* a video game collector. And, I gotta say, your advice here translates almost perfectly into video game collecting, and I'm sure other collecting hobbies! Good, solid advice, man!

That's true. And I'd add to that: it really helps if your tastes tend naturally toward more "niche interest" items - the kind of stuff that isn't mainstream, but is loved with a passion by the people who do appreciate it. I'm lucky that the kinds of games I always liked and bought for myself were RPGs, shmups, etc. - the exact kinds of games that are now worth a mint. I'm sure the same thing applies to vinyl collecting, i.e. a love of obscure prog and early electronica will probably serve you well :)

yeh dude cant afford big dollars but same last record store went for sleeves and wiping cloth so broswing found the harder they come jimmy cliff classic ska reggae record 20 dollars great condition thought aahh may be a bit much so bought j.j. pearl for 10 pre virus ever get back into any store probably another but not harder original also bought country 70 compilation for 7 so spent 20 anyway then later on think why the h. didmt i buy the harder record wont see that one again

You've narrowed it down to the basics. Good job. I might also add a reminder that cold temps can also warp records as does heat. I say this because a friend kept some of his records in an unheated garage in winter and suffered many warped discs. If you love 'em, take care of 'em.

I use those IKEA shelf things for my vinyls too.

I just started my collection recently and can’t wait to get more. From Boris and Pink Floyd and The Avalanches to J dilla. Haven’t been so excited to collect something ever.

Quantity over quality really hits home for me. When I first started collecting, I was buying vinyl like it was going out of style. I bought so much used albums off eBay for one or two songs that I liked on a record. I still have most of those, but I never listened to them.

I just got into vinyl over quarantine. The way we’re living so much in the digital world was really affecting me. Vinyl touches so many senses - I can literally hold my music and care for it. I started collecting quickly all of my favorites because I’ve been late on the game and a lot of them are rare because they are independent and small. I focus on 2006-2015. I definitely hear you on the pressure because on tiktok, no ones collection looks like mine. I have artists that I rarely ever see in others and other people have Billie Eilish, Ariana, and a lot of the very new stuff today. I love my collection and I stuck to only buying things I know well and have memories with. And I feel you on spending money on your favorite albums and buying them before it becomes extremely hard - again a lot of my favorites from the particular era I’m targeting is getting harder and I had to really pay for the Sky Ferreira one. Me too. After 3 years of research, decision-making, and planning. I've finally started my vinyl journey just this month (January 2022). My original plan is to start my journey back in 2019. But at that time I can't afford it yet because of my limited college allowance. Now, I have the means now. Plus I won't be travelling and/or upgrading my computer (computer parts are still overpriced due to covid) anytime soon. That's why I decided to start now. Same experience, I'm also priortizing my favorites. I'll be likely to pick the greatest hits compliations for the majority of the artists/bands I've wanted. But there are some albums that I would love to have on vinyl. My music selection will focus between the decades of the 1950's up to 2020's. I do enjoy both modern and old music. Also, it is very hard for me, the pressure of buying all the records you want before they are all gone for good or if there are any, it's gonna be overpriced. If you love that album, and its on a good condition, most of the tracks you love to listen to it repeatly, and its reasonably priced, GO FOR IT! BUY IT IMMEDIATELY. Same. I will collect the music that I'm very familiar with and ofc for the sake of nostalgia/memories that is associated with it. I'm so done with Spotify and CD's but I'm still keeping/listening to my Cassettes.

Agreed. My favorite part about vinyl is that it makes music so much more than just listening. the stimulation of my visual and touch senses makes listening to music a lot more gratifying. Plus I get to see my favorite album cover artworks as large, physical pieces of art, vs the small pictures on the phone screen

One thing with collecting I've realized is just because you like it doesn't mean you need to own it. There's records I've collected that i do enjoy a lot and but with the amount of space I (and many others have) you have to constitute what you can have. I went through a whole downsizing phase a few weeks back (Cds/Vinyl/Cassettes) and I'll tell you getting rid of the media that's more only a visual to have in your collection rather then a constant listen is very rewarding.

Instead of buying a new record player I took my late dads old Sony from the early '70s and spent some money on having it serviced, including new pickup and needle. Spent maybe $250 in total. I doubt I'd get a new one with the same quality for that money.

"Man, I should have bought that record when I had the chance" This sort of happened to me with the most recent addition my collection, The Dark Souls Trilogy Soundtrack 10 LP Boxed Set. It was 300$ on Discogs last May, but it wasn't selling and so, I thought I would have all the time in the world to buy it. I didn't think the price would increase any more than that, BUT MAN DID I EVER TURN OUT TO BE WRONG. There were only 2 copies of the Boxed Set available for sale all year and I bought one for 650$ last month. Dark Souls is in my Top 5 Favourite Games Of All Time, and I really wanted this S/T, but I regretted waiting so long to pull the trigger and felt, the week before I bought it, "If I don't buy this now, I never will".

Back around 1978, when I was in my Punk phase, I saw a copy of Germ Free Adolescents by X-Ray Spex in the import section of J&R Music World in Manhattan. I'd heard them on the Live At The Roxy album and liked them, so I said, "I should buy this", but didn't. Import records were more expensive than the US issues, so it was $5.99 instead of J&R's usual $3.99. I said, "Well, I'll come back" They had about 5 copies and I figured they'd never sell all five in a week. X Ray Spex wasn't exactly a big name in the US. When I went back, they were all gone. I couldn't believe it. I never saw that record again in any record store.

I just got my first record player for my 20th bday and this has definitely been such a good informative video!!

I'm 72 and I'm now trying to rebuild my lp collection from the fiftees through the mid seventies.....you really get it....your advice is real....you're a good man !!!

I'm kind of semi retired from actively collecting vinyl. I agree with all your tips. Solid advice. I'll also add sometimes it does good to judge a book by it's cover. I made many a great find because I liked the record sleeve. Also, once I spent 8 hours in a record store. I was on a mission. I searched through every crate. I found 1 record I had been searching for for years. I paid 29 cents for it! I didn't ever do that again though! lol Lastly, I'll chime in on "the purchase I didn't make". Back in '95 I randomly happened on a local record shop. I went in briefly and nosed around. Went to the section for an artist I like, and found an album which I wasn't familiar with, but the jacket intrigued me. Long story short, I didn''t get it. I did go back for it a week later, but it was gone. It would be several years later when I learned that that album contained an epic cut that I had been searching for for over 20 years, and I had it in my hands, and slept on it!

The seven deadly sins is a great intro to vinyl collection! I have risked a few rare"cheap" buys that have cracks in the vinyl for the sole purpose of a reminder to find a decent copy of that album! Totally agree with "do what you want not others opinion! And if you love all types of music always be prepared for a little risk on something you've never heard of! You'll get a couple of duds but you can discover some absolute gems!

Great video and I can relate to these things even though I'm a Northern Soul fanatic! 2 main things never to do! 1. Never backtrack records to cue them! It eventually ruins the intro's!! 2. Always store records on edge, 100% Upright! Never on an angle as this warps them. And never horizontal, as this dish warps them!

I spent 35 yrs collecting over 15,000 LPs, now I have just spend 6 years selling every last one of them. No regret as collecting records is impossible to complete and never ending. I spent 6 years changing all my favourites to CD. My view was when was the last time I played this, if the answer was not once in 10 years, it had to go. I thought I would miss them I never have.

same. i sold everything including my ridiculous stereo. Payed off my car and mortgage and now its just cd's. a lot cheaper and less hassle. Plus what I found towards the end with the vinyl come back thing is that the new stuff is simply expensive garbage...just digital pressed into vinyl....some of the reissues I got were $30+ and sounded horrible...obviously not analog...its turned into a fad for people who collect and has nothing to do with music....now i just listen to cd's and enjoy being debt free.....just got 19 great cd's off of discogs for $50 shipped.

I like your story about the Andy Warhol record . I had a similar story I was in a HMV store in London in the mid nineties and picked up a sealed copy of Nirvana bleach red and white splatter with bonus 7" record . Thought that's a cool record £15 . Then proceeded to put it back in its shelf. I'm kicking myself now that record is worth thousands!!!!!! Oh well. Needless to say I don't have that record in my collection.

Seems like a nice guy with some good advice. But there is one point he may have overlooked. If you are planning on buying a certain record here is some good advice: If the record you want is relatively common be sure to SHOP AROUND. The price difference between sellers for the exact same record can be astronomical! That's for common records. On the other hand, if you have been searching for one that rarely turns up for sale buy it immediately after inspecting it for damage. You will always be able to get money again but you may never see that record again! I've learned this the hard way, believe me!

Bought "The Fellowship of the Ring" Soundtrack for around 200 USD a few years back. Unfortunately it came damaged on arrival. Got a refund but by the time I re ordered it, it was sold out. Its now worth up to 1500 USD and I am still loosing sleep over it

I did the same thing with a bunch of early 80s metal records at a Goodwill. I bought a handful but didn't know all the bands but after gaining way more knowledge I left a lot of amazing finds behind.

The great thing about the digital media is you can find and listen to almost anything. When I am unsure on an album I can get online and listen to all or parts of it to determine if it is worthy to add to my collection. I have often looked up songs on my phone and listened to them to see if the album that piqued my interest was worth my investment.

I have Kallax and have had it for years and I just realised that I have had it rotated wrong in all those years. Thank you for the tip!

I felt the same way on what I would see posted on Instagram. I was slowly buying what I thought I should have to my collection and not focusing on what I really enjoyed the most and adding those first to my collection. I’m always learning from this experience as a collector. Great video.

...it might be usefull to use a little approximately $20 on a tonearm scale...some of the markings arent set too well. Again, its def worth it when dropping more on that than an album?

Most cartridge/stylus combinations will have a tracking weight range - it's always best to go to the heavier end of the range, especially if the stylus is new. The cantilever suspension is at it's firmest when new and will soften with time, so start at the high end and gradually back it off to the low end as it wears in. A lot of people think by running light it will extend the life of the stylus, but in actual fact the opposite is true. If you run too light the stylus will bounce around in the groove and this will actually increase the wear - you're always best to run too heavy than too light. As pointed out by RO GRA, invest in a tonearm scale and an alignment protractor. The scales aren't expensive, the $20 digital ones on eBay and so on are fine, they are surprisingly accurate when calibrated properly. With the cost being less than most good albums there's no excuse to not get one really. An alignment protractor can be printed out for FREE from vinylengine.com. This shit matters. Almost all groove damage is caused by worn stylii and/or incorrectly set up gear. Align your cartridge and set the tracking weight correctly and you'll have many hours of satisfying vinyl spinning. They will sound great and your records will remain in good condition. If you don't know how to do it yourself then either research it (there's heaps of videos on youtube teaching you how), or ask someone who knows their stuff to do it for you. Thank me later.

Hey man! Just discovered your channel, and lovin' it! I've been collecting for 40+ years. Totally agree with not getting Crosleys. I've steered many people away from them and they've been glad I did. Happy collecting!

Noble Records - I got the time now, so what am I waiting for.

I still kick myself to this day....about 6 years ago I ran into a primo PJ/Neil Young vinyl copy of Mirror Ball and passed because I thought it was priced a little high and I would definitely run into another copy in the future....fast forward 6 years and I STILL have not seen a copy 😩😩😩😩

Oh man! I had a copy of that when it came out and parted with it about 20 years ago or so and I'm kicking myself for it. I don't even remember why I got rid of it, as I rarely part with records.

Most cheaper turntables with no counterweight are spring weighted. The stylus only has 3 grams of pressure on most, so they are not damaging your records to any meaningful degree per most experts. Crosley also makes some very good entry level turntables. That being said, the low end Crosleys (cruisers) and all in ones are pretty bad. Buy vintage turntables if you can't afford a quality modern one. I just bought a JVC L-A31 for $20 for example. A little clean up, a little set up, and I have a decent entry/mid turn table that cost less than a Crosley Cruser, sounds better, and won't kill my records.

I actually started with a Crosley Cruiser and it was terrible, sounded worse than listening from KZread and the wow and flutter got worse and worse as I used it. I’ve since upgraded to the AT-LP60 which is so much better even if it’s still on the cheaper end

I used to not sleeve my albums, because I thought it was a waste of money. But then I realized...I bag my comics books to keep them safe... Anyway, excellent video!

I bought an original pressing of The Blurred Crusade by the Australian band The Church back when I was seventeen (I’m now 55). In those days you would share your records with your friends - no streaming back then so it was a good way to find out about new bands. That record must have gone round the whole school and when it came back, sure enough it was as warped as the USS Enterprise hot on the heels of the Klingons. Unplayable. But I still have it - too many memories to sell it!

I’m becoming very interested in vinyl collecting and the whole idea of record players. I feel like it would be a much better musical experience than just headphones and spotify, which is my day to day way of listening. This video was super helpful, you got yourself a new subscriber :)

One of the top rules: buy old pressings. The majority of modern represses are aweful. I own a couple of japanese pressings from the 70's that sound like you wouldn't believe.

Not entirely true. A first pressing of Hendrix's first three albums are dreadful compared to the modern 180 grain vinyl. I have a first pressing of Band of Gypsies that is clean, mirror like, and the vinyl is thin and flimsy and the sound "meh." I can say the same for Europe 72, where the 180 grain remaster is light years better than the original. All of the Blue Note Tone Poet series pressings blow doors on the original pressings from the 1950s and 1960s. I can say the same as to Pink Floyd's Saucerful of Secrets. I recently listened to some reissues of japanese jazz albums on Cool Cult Records and some on Tompkins Square, and they are phenomenal as well. So I think the generalization that "modern represses are awful" is a fallacy.

I have quite a few modern represses and they sound absolutely amazing (King Crimson albums, Iron Maiden's Fear of the Dark, Metallica's Kill 'em All, just to name a few). And, yes, apart from that, I agree with your comment.

@xXMarklessMismanagementXxyou will rethink this once you have more experience, better gear and you realize how vinyl sounds in comparison to other mediums and that it isn't a nostalgic trip. You'll realize streaming music, even through a great DAC doesn't come close. Then you will understand why a proper, good remaster pressed on 180 grain is the best sound you will hear. I think focusing on vinyl as an oldies thing is a bit narrow sighted, but to each your own. Do you.

I know that feeling. One time I found about 4 Tom Waits records for a buck a piece at a thift shop. No I did not snatch them up because I didn't recognize him at the time. At first they just looked like mediocre dollar bin stuff. Ended up regretting it because they are 20 to 30 dollar records and he is very talented. Shows how much I knew at the time.

Didn't happen to be in Olympia, Washington? I watched someone put back 4 Tom Waits albums at the goodwill and jumped on them....my favorite find ever.

I was at a Good Will and saw some crappy records each for a dollar. I just randomly bought Summer Breeze because it seemed like a 70s band and I thought might as well try it for a dollar. Best dollar ever spent.

I was at a record show a few years back an passed up a early Metallica Ride The Lighting record because someone had drawn a little man sitting in the electric chair and a word bubble Eddie Van Halen Rules! coming from the guy's mouth. I though it diminished the record even though I thought it was kind of funny. It was probably drawn on in the time period original to the album which made the album a unique time piece. I also love that album. I kick myself everytime I think about it.

Funny! I remember passing on a copy of Pink Floyd's the Wall that someone had gotten signed by their entire highschool class back in 1979 or 1980 as a graduation thing. the sleeve was "ruined", but I wish I had scooped it up because it was such a cool, unique thing.

I definitely agree on these, especially the condition one. When I'm out digging, I grab what interests me and get a stack going, and then once I've combed through all the sections I want to dig in, I check each record to make sure the condition is good. Many times I've built up a big stack of records and had to put half of them back because I checked the record's condition and there's big scratches, or sometimes even the jacket is too beat up for me.

Me too. I have kicked myself countless times for not grabbing an album I should have, only to later discover it is now impossible to find.

We have a ton of albums with the edge scratched by cats. I think the vinyl itself is still fine in most of them but the sleeves look pretty bad.
