7 Cancelled Video Game Movies that Were Probably Going to be Terrible

Ойындар

Liked The Super Mario Brothers Movie? Thought Detective Pikachu was fun? Well most of gaming's forays into film have fallen into failure, and many fail before they even reach our screens. Whether they looked plain rubbish, were sequels to average films, or were at risk of meddling from studios, we're actually kinda glad these films got cancelled...!

A hitman movie is never ever going to work until the people making it realise that it needs to be a COMEDY not a serious dramatic action thing. I know there's serious dramatic plot, but 99% of actual time spent engaging with the games is an incredibly intense unsmiling man with a super obvious tattoo wearing a pink smock and making murder puns at a bake sale

I'd like to see a Hitman movie (or TV show - different location every episode) where 47 is a silent assassin. No epic shootouts with a dozen security guards in broad daylight. No massive explosions. Stealth. Disguises. Accidents.

  • @bobapthorpe

Honestly. 47 is the straightest of straight men - you absolutely must have him remain emotionless, determined, and focused while all manner of bizarre lethal mayhem explodes around him. One druglord buried in concrete, another devoured by his pet hippo - both instigated by a grim "shaman" wearing a ridiculous, obscene headdress. And absolutely yes on the dialogue: deadpan puns and double entendres: "That sounds dangerous - should I be worried?" "I'm not." Also, the Homing Briefcase needs to be treated like a silent sidekick.

I've been thinking I'd like to see a Hitman movie done as a dark comedy. Have 47 do his iconic floating around a corporate party in various disguises. He follows the target around, with a quick flash to each possible assassination he won't perform while Diana talks informing 47 on all the 'relevant' dirt on the target so the audience loses all sympathy for him (or her. A couple?). After each flash 47 says why he won't do that assassination. 47 makes a few minor detours to pick up the keys to a possible get away. Have him pick up 3 of them to keep the audience guessing. Have 47 kick down some access ladders and open some sealed doors like he would do in the game. Then he gets this uncharacteristic huge smile on his face in a room and says "Yes, this will do." Cut to 47 entering the ever present security office where he quickly neutralizes the guards, destroys the camera memory and sabotages the security system without alerting the guards. Then the "fun" begins with a truly outrageous assassination that results in an "accidental death" as 47 reaches his chosen method of egress.

Can't wait for _The Schloss Tepes Symphonic Preservation Society._ Starring Owen Wilson as Trevor Belmont; Luke Wilson as Alucard; Elliot "Ellen" Page as Syphon "Sypha" Belnades; Steve Martin as Hector; and of course Bill Murray as Dracula. You'll thrill as Trevor and Syphon (formerly Sypha, before the surgery) hash out their messy divorce over the course of the movie, as the raging, hormone-addled Syphon sics -her- their bloodsucking lawyer, Renon (Kristofer Hivju) on the hapless Trevor, who must repeatedly fight off the bloodthirsty barrister's repeated attempts to serve him with divorce papers. Fortunately, the timid Trevor doesn't have to do the actual fighting; Renon is usually driven off by _Trevor's_ divorce lawyer (slash tax accountant), the mysterious Zobek (Wesley Snipes). All this really distracts poor Trevor from his current job: remodeling Dracula's castle into the luxurious Hotel Ravenloft - to its fussy owner's exacting, ever-changing specifications. (Bill "Dracula" Murray: "And then there's the big central keep, right here... I'm thinking roller coaster, like the Stratosphere in Vegas. No? Too much? Help me out here, Trev. May I call you 'Trev'? No? How about 'T.B.'? " 'Trev-O'?") (Rated PG-13 for shady financial dealings and a brief, completely gratuitous shot of Syphon's mastectomy scars. Oscar noms all around!)

The problem with games is their whole art is being interactive, which makes them really tough to cram into a linear format. If you have a strong setting like TLoU it can work (I always figured a Mass Effect series during Shephard's absence would be great), but Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, and even Castlevania were all pastiches of zombie films, kung-fu films, and monster films respectively. It turns into a copy of a copy, so you're left with something that's too game-like and not interesting without the interactivity, or bears so little relation to the material why bother?

  • @TheRealCodeBlack

I dunno. Most of video games have strong central narratives that are fairly easy to adapt to screen. The issue isn't that the adaptability isn't there, but that for a very long time just like with animation and comic adaptations, Hollywood has had a long history of not taking those narratives seriously and trying to warp the IP into something more marketable, inevitably leaving a mess behind. This is starting to change in a big way, and I'm glad for it, but it's still there from time to time and still causes problems. At least we're long past the days of Uwe Boll, though. (shudder).

Mortal kombat is a bad example, considering the actual story portion is entirely linear. Castlevania could totally be done well; Yes it would basically be a copy of monster films, but Castlevania itself IS a copy of monster tropes, that in of itself isn't necessarily a bad thing; All you need it is to be stylized in Castlevania's style and with iconic Castlevania setpieces, and it'd fit perfectly.

Splinter Cell had a movie that danced around production and even had the confidence to include a teaser in the main menu of Chaos Theory that claimed you wouldn't know the whole story of the games until you see the movie. Hollywood looked at Bioshock, a game whose entire narrative and plot twist arguably works precisely because it explores the idea of player autonomy in a narrative game and because it's spent hours building an implicit relationship of trust, and which is celebrated for its environmental storytelling which flourishes in an interactive medium, and said "make it a movie".

  • @SamJ.J.

I felt bioshock felt pretty ham fisted cause there were a bunch of parts where I wanted to do something else but you're forced into following the linear pathways, which kind of crippled the impact of the whole message. Plus the fact that a bunch of the plot makes no fucking sense anymore once you get to the twist doubled down on that feeling. A movie would be better imo because you can't control it and therefore aren't being railroaded so hard by it, and the subtleties could be presented a lot better.

You know, PG-13 rating aside, showing a Little Sister being brutally slain would work if the protagonist witnessed it, and seeing the child die could motivate said protag to save the rest from the horrors of Rapture. It's also weird that the Sims had an even more gonzo plot than that canceled movie. It involved alien women disguised as humans using time travel to get rid of a romantic rival by throwing her into the past, but that woman getting back by writing a mystery novel that pretty much told them these future alien women did it that got way popular. And since it was the same town but time displaced, it generated a lot of detective and mystery enthusiasts in that town right about the time she went 'missing' that got everyone looking into her high profile disappearance, pretty much assuring that those sisters will be found out for her 'murder,' even if they don't figure out the aliens and time travel. Yes I'm serious. Go check Game Theory if you don't believe me.

The show is awful for many, _many_ reasons, but, as others have pointed out, it would not be nearly as bad if it matched with Halo lore, and, most importantly, didn't have Master Chief as the protagonist. He has his story! There are other spartans! They are also cool! (The worst choice they made was having Chief remove his helmet in the first episode. I know it sounds nitpicky, but this is _the_ character known for never taking off the helmet. Like, come on)

Thank you for not including the Street Fighter movie in that opening montage of bad adaptations. Andy would have been quite upset, I'm sure.

Street Fighter is a bad film. But it's a great movie. Just a good dumb fun popcorn movie. Like Fast and Furious, or Batman 1966, or Pirates of the Caribbean.

@@nathaniellevesque2782 Much like Ian McDermid in Revenge of the Sith, he's hamming it up. He's evil and he loves it, and it makes any scene with him in campy and just fun to watch.

i was playing jsr the other day and thought to myself, this is a ridiculous reaction to kids spray painting walls, theres a guy planting bombs all over the city and this dude with the desert eagle just called in the tanks..... can you do an episode on over zealous reactions to things in video games?

True. Why couldn't they have hired a more competent set of writers for a setup with such massive untapped potential? The games were enjoyable for what they were (especially if you’re a dragon enthusiast), but the budget that was promised for that poorly written movie script would have been better off being poured into the games given the scope.

I honestly liked the ac movie and thought the modern bits were better there than in the games. Not that I enjoyed the modern bits in the games, but at least in the movie he does more than just wander around slowly before getting back in the animus. And I think the films animus is more realistic than the game, because of the robot arms; I mean the games expect you to believe the bleed effect from basically lying in a bed with a VR integration.

Yeah, I liked the AC film too and feel the same about the arms vs. bed. And as a film operating as an introduction to the AC world for filmgoers who might not have played any of the games, spending a decent amount of "establishing time" in the modern world makes sense. They also didn't want to use Ezio or any existing assassin character so as not to disappoint people's expectations of how that character should be. I was a _huge_ Fassbender fan at the time (still like him now, just more toned down in my level of interest), so was following the production closely. For me, the *most* disappointing thing about the whole situation was how Fassbender was _so engaged and excited_ heading up to the film (it was even his production company behind the project), then how he started distancing from it after reviews came out and so on. You can still be proud of and love your work even if some don't like it, Fassy, c'mon!!

The modern day stuff was only ever kind of interesting in the Ezio trilogy, aka when you actually did shit there, climb around, unlock tomes, Desmond even fights gun-wielding Abstergo agents once! And then it became "Walking Simulator 2kxx"
