Welcome back to Everyday Cycling, a place where we talk about riding bikes as a way to lead a simpler and happier lifestyle. I am Victor, and today we’re back at the Georgia Tech campus, at a student organized bike shop called Starter Bikes. I’m happy that they allowed me to record this video here. Being able to eventually use their space and their tools will be a huge enabler for some of the videos I wanna make. I’ll talk more about this place in a different video, because today’s topic is going over some truly useful upgrades for the Brompton. Let’s get this bike on the stand and give it a quick clean.
The first accessory is a rear view mirror called Mirrycle. I’ve been using this mirror on different bikes for the past 9 years. The way this works is by sticking this part inside of the handlebar and screwing this bolt. That will bring these little plastic pieces against each other and locking inside of the handlebar. But to install this on the Brompton, it’s clear we’re gonna have to do something about this grip and cut a hole through it. Using a knife to cut through the rubber is a good start, but there’s some hard plastic underneath. With the grip properly modified, we can put it back on the brompton, and install the mirror. I like installing it upside down, as it doesn’t affect the folding and you’re still able to see well. After folding the bike, if you want, you may need to give it a little twist so it stays completely out of the way.
Moving down on the stem let’s have EZ-Clamp Springs Installed on this bike. I’ve covered these springs on a previous video, they’re super easy to install and they’re really helpful to keep the clamp aligned when screwing and unscrewing the hinges. Definitely not an essential item, but it’s a nice touch.
The next one is one my favorites, and it’s also been featured on this channel before, and that’s the X-roller wheel extender. To install it, we first need to remove the original brompton wheels. When mounting the extender, make sure that the extendable axle is on the righthand side. Then, we need to screw the bolts on the sides, keeping the wheel extender straight up. There are some very small socket screws that go in here and keep these lugs into place. Make sure you tighten them too. Once everything is solid, just reinstall the wheels. The left side is straight forward, but the right side requires a 9 mm wrench to prevent the extendable axle from rotating while you are tightening the wheel. Now the bike is much easier to roll around, and also a lot more stable. Note how the wheel extender has pleasing click when it’s extended or fully retracted. Some people ask me if there’s any risk of it extending by itself, and it sure does not. This thing is rock solid.
This next upgrade is a rear rack. This is one of the things I’ve missed the most on the Brompton electric thus far. First, I find the bike rather difficult to roll and to use as a shopping cart when doing my groceries. Second, because I wanted to increase the amount of cargo I can carry on it, so having rear rack is an obvious option.
Let’s make this bike even better to roll around by replacing these wheels by the Brompton EZ-Wheels. I took these off my other bike, so they’re not brand new, but they’ll definitely make rolling the Brompton a bit smoother.
Now that I’m considering using the rear rack for cargo, or even having a bag mounted on it, I need a way to keep the bike standing up without having to flip the rear wheel under. For that, I’ll be using a dedicated kickstand. This one is from Silverock. It attaches to the wheel axle and rack bolt on the left side of the bike. Installing it requires removing the axle nut on the left side and the rack bolt, and stacking everything back in the right order.

@@EverydayCycling I was going to say the same thing....my saved video list for Brompton, is pretty much all your videos Victor. I'm seriously considering ac-line black edition and your videos are helping to me see how handlebar choices and after sales upgrades can happen. This is the best Brompton accessories video. Some really clever ideas. My only suggestion for better lights would be Bontrager RT lights. One on the seat post just below the seat, and the other right in the centre under the handlebars (The front light needs rotating inside it’s mount). The perfect Brompton lights setup.

Victor I was debating a kickstand as well, to get more use out of rack. I found the Minoura SLMV-1 Mini-Velo Stand on the internet. Cost about 65 Us Dollars. I just installed it. Very stable did not have the issues you found. Weighs 155gm. I did find it snapping in the up position, and hitting the rim of the back wheel. To stop that I wrapped velcro around the top of the kick stand, and secured with black electrical tape so it does not slide down. Could also use a dot of Crazy Glue, but I wanted to be able to get it off if I did not like it. Velcro tape stops the inward travel of Kickstand. Thanks for your work on behalf of us all. You made an engineer out of me!

Today I used my wheel extender and really struggled to keep my bike from tipping over. Thanks to your detailed videos, I realised I'd fitted the extender on the left. But, I think I need a rear rack to achieve good stability when rolling my bike. It would also give better ground clearance thus preventing further damage to my fender. I'll add two upgrades I find handy. 1. The Brompton's handlebars don't leave much room to mount gear such as a GPS. Search ebay for a "bike handbar extender." That'll let you add a 20 cm bar for accessories. 2. An Ibera PakRac Mini Commuter rack I had on a mountain bike fits the seat post on a Brompton perfectly. You can use it on its own or in addition to the lower-down Brompton rack. As a plus it can be used with Ibera's extensive line of quick-release bike bags at prices that are typically cheaper than Brompton-only ones.

Thank you, Paul! I prefer the looks of the L version, but for someone who will often push the bike when folded, grocery shopping for example, the rear rack is a MUST. Now, not everybody likes to push the bike. Some prefer putting it inside of the shopping cart, so it's really up to how one uses it.

Hi. Please say more about the protective tape idea. Edit: I looked that up and it appears to be handlebar grip tape. The main objections I would have to that are: 1. Grip tape has a reputation of collecting moisture under it and rusting out metal parts. 2. It covers up the pretty paint job if you value the color of your Brompton (would be OK to cover some areas of high wear, but not most of the frame).

just curious, you had a Jan video on the non-electric and installed a GOrack, and said you'd bin the brompton rack, may i ask why you've changed your mind since getting the electric and you've reverted your favourite to the Brompton rack as opposed to the GoRack?

Hi Victor, it’s Will from Chicago. I am interested in purchasing several upgrades for my Brompton such as the hinge clamps, seat post clamp, ez wheels, handlebar catch and several others. There are many options available for these but I am struggling with the color choices. I am totally colorblind and unable to distinguish colors from each other. My bike is a flame lacquer black edition. Because it is a black edition, my initial thought was to purchase all black upgrade components, but after considering this, I am wondering if it’s too much black. I’m thinking all the black might be boring. Most of the components are available in silver, gold, titanium color, and of course black. I am wondering which color you think would coordinate best with flame lacquer black edition. I realize this is personal taste, but for me everything is shades of gray. Hopefully you are familiar with the flame lacquer color and can offer some advice. If black really is the best, then it will help me to know. I appreciate you help and look forward to your response.

Thanks for the Excellent upgrade options. I dont currently own a Brompton but im torn between a Brompton B75 entry model in Ireland New at €900 Euro or a used Dahon EEZZ D3 for €500 used in really good condition. The extremely Light weight Dahon comes in at 9.7kg and the Brompton B75 at 11.6KG One concern id have with the brompton is that accessories seem really expensive compared to other brands. Each has their pros and cons.

If possible, you always want your kickstand closer to your payload... that's why on standard bikes, the one that fits on the rear triangle is best. I haven't been paying attention... Brompton has not yet made the "easy wheel" standard? Shame! For me, I think that little plastic gizmo that keeps the clamps aligned/pushed out might even be the *top of this list* of upgrades. Thanks for your great videos!

The original wheel that comes stock these days is much better than a few years ago, so if I didn't have EZ wheels laying around, I probably wouldn't have replaced those. But there's still some noticeable advantage because of the bearings on the EZ wheels versus bushings on the original. The springs are a neat upgrade!

Nothing shown should add more than a few ounces put together. I have ridden an e-Brommy and the motor alone without the battery adds a few pounds to the front and noticeably unbalances it when lifting the bike one-handed but not when riding. Based on my personal experience test riding an e-Brompton at the Brompton Junction in New York I would not recommend it.

This is a smaller, more convenient mirror for the Brompton: CatEye BM-45 Bar End Bike Mirror (£12.99) - fitting is the same as the one shown in this video. I been using it on my Brompton for 3 years. It has a very stiff ball-joint between the mount and the mirror to allow for precise positioning. If you knock it in transit it will move, if you wack it really hard (against a doorway for instance, it will 'pop off' and it's an effort to 'pop it' back on). There's no distortion, vibration or magnification. It sticks out about 2", doesn't effect "the fold" (I'm from the UK, we drive on the left, so it's on the right - non-floor-side when folded) Get one, it will make your cycling safer... at a glance, it'll let you see if it's a truck, bus, or car that's coming up behind you and trying to squash to into the gutter...

The easy clamps may also be bought from AliExpress in a - better version with an internal metal spring, which I favor. And the small wheels are useless on anything but a very flat surface. I use larger wheels, lately I have ordered a 10 cm wheel size. And why a kickstand, when you are able to just fold the backframe, as a stand! Without the bag, of course.
