👍Your information about all of the equipment required to get started with the sport was good and descriptive, and you also wisely gave information about the necessity to adhere to safety aspects of the same in a sensible manner. As a qualified Windsurfer with plenty of experience in the same and I had even operated my own school many years ago I am delighted to know that the safety aspects are still as good, although everything has been gradually developed and altered positively . I will never lose my interest in seeing and hearing about anything related to it now, and of course practice it at any level whenever possible.

For west coast sweden, I read windguru pro with WRF 9km (2,5days), GFS 13km (10 days), HIRLAM 7,5km (1,5day) (equivalent to FCOO), I also add FCOO map and YR on the area. The most important is the consistency between models in the previous several days... I am looking at forecast every day and look at the evolution. Hirlam is good for local sea breeze where WRF usually misses it. Windguru pro now have the ability to make a custom forecast which a weighted version of the models you like. I am testing it right now. I also sail always in the same 4-5 spots, so I can anticipate the relation between the forecast and the real weather...which does not always work as forecasted. A good thing is also to find real windmeters in the area or buy one for yourself (~50€ - smartphone version or only windmeter) so you can really tune yourself to the wind... that way in learned 14kts is much more than what I thought it was...😃. Use of wind meter also helps you to relate your gear to the wind strength and the tuning of you gear. Sail and repeat is the best way.... make your own "sail to wind" map, taking notes of speed of wind, before and after session, sail size, board size if you have several, tuning of the sail and your comfort level in sailing. Session after session you will be more and more comfortable to chose the right size and fly. 🤙🏼🤙🏼. I also use a free session log website (my windsurfing session) which allows to keep your memory clear about each session.

Im 14 and I've only got a 7.0 arrows attack sail probably from 2005 and an rrd sx135 also from 2005...so wether it is 7kts or 20 it's the same gear choice for me😂 yesterday was the first day i planned and it was amazing!

And about the wind forecasts, in Scheveningen, and the Netherlands more generally, Windfinder's chart is pretty accurate, and : TOP TIP: check using windmeister, which provides live measurements every 5 minutes or so, as well as a map with an arrow indicating wind direction. You can then use the second map to see wave, wind, current etc, all extremely accurate!! TL,DR: Use windfinder for forecast and check if it corroborates with windmeister (live data)

Windy works best in Taiwan. After I watched this video I realized I still have a lot of rooms to improve! Your guide is godly.

Hi Nico, i didn't knew about the story of somebody getting run over by a windsurfer but last year (i think) a Russian RS:X windsurfer was killed by a big foiling transport boat... the video and the crash is very important and we very have to take care !

In the USA NOAA (weather.gov) is one of the preferred forecast sites. The forecast models on NOAA tend to be pretty accurate, and while the interface is pretty old school you can still pinpoint your favorite spots using lat/lon. Here's an example link for one of my favorite spots: tinyurl.com/yd9hvjat If anyone is interested/slightly technically savvy, note the full URL that tiny URL resolves to once it's loaded. In the URL you'll see all the params you see set in the interface (i.e. toggle temperature, humidity, etc), there you'll also see 'textField1=27.4708&textField2=-97.3094', those represent the latitude and longitude, you can set those to whatever you want and reload the page to see the forecast for that location. There are a few ways to dial in that closely but in my experience it tends to take some digging. Please let me know if anyone has a quicker method than this.

Nico, for a recreational windsurfer doing mostly freeride, once he/she has achieved a solid intermediate level, is there ever any reason for him/her to have a board with a centerboard? Nice video, as usual.

Nico, I had an accident one time when I fiound my self in the water under the sail. Panicked I coudn't find the issu till I started thinking there were my last moments. Is there a way to train not to panic in this situation? For example, to try to find myself under the sail on purpose? Or, while in the water, try to do something that will bring myself on the suface?

Hi Anastasia, I experienced the same when I was 14. Under water I got hooked in the harness lanes and panicked, thought I was drowning and after a while I became really calm thinking I would die. That moment I was able to force the leech of my sail to stick my mouth and nose out of the water and get a few breaths. I then dove back under the sail to unhook. Crazy experience. Increasing your lunge volume will definitely give you more confidence. There are tutorials on training to hold your breath and endurance training plays a role, too. Then diving under a sail, maybe in a calm day without wind will help too. Best of luck 🤙

It never happened to me to get stuck under the sail. I do not know how to avoid panic other than: unless something really weird happened, you should be able to locate the hook with your hands and dismount using hands, even blinded. Some harness have quick release, but I have doubts it is useful in such situation. I recommend practice falling into the water, with sail hooked, in shallow water. Though the more intimidating problem is being hooked under the sail after catapult. Then your lines will be twisted, but once again, I thing you will be able to handle that. Just practice to stay calm. You have time.

Hi Anastasia, It happed to me ones as well, not a pleasant experience. I read somewhere that if you are still hooked it, under the sail, reach for the mast. Your harness lines, if in the right position) should allow you to look around the front of the sail. So when under water reach for the mast. It works great for me.

I saw this too late haha have 5 needles in my right toe right now.. but it was worth it 🔥

Nico Prien oh my that’s a long time ago lol there is also my favourite flat water spot at Bahia de Formas next to the town of Arinaga. This spot has been used by other sailers like Gunner Asmussen, Twan Verseput and others and whenever I go with the Fanatic Centre, Dunkerbeck is there sometimes!

@Nico Prien, great video thanks! Any tips for someone who in the 80's thought he could surf really well and now panics a little when the board is going full speed! So much faster than in earlier days!!! When my board (tabou rocket wide 128 l) starts planing it picks up speed so incredibly fast that I find it difficult to control the board, get my feet in the straps and relax. So in short, are there ways to reduce speed somewhat during planing but of course remain in planing and if yes, how to control speed?

When you got planing and first strap in, keep slightly upwind, it slows you down. Then it's time to put in your rear strap. Remember - going upwind is slow and downwind fast. To stop planning - head upwind more and more and release backhand.

Does anybody have a reliable forecast for Bavaria

I have been out on the water by myself about 2 dozen times now, I use rental equipment. I find that I'm plateauing in technique. I can do basic maneuvering but when I get out to the open water I'm bogged down and get jostled by the chop. If I pick up any speed it gets really hard to control the sail. How do I improve from this point?

Have you ever been to jibe city, Bonaire? If so, what were your experiences? :D

I don't know about Nico, but I've been there. It's a beautiful place with lots of shallow water. It's perfect for learning because in many places you can just step onto your board in about thigh deep water. It can be tricky to avoid running aground though. There are some spots that are too shallow to sail over and you need to learn where they are and avoid them. When I was there (July) it was breezy but not super windy. I used a 7.0 to 8.0 m sail most of the time. Jibe City had some nice boards, but they are slippery! They get so much use that the non-skid wears off. It would be good to wear shoes, which I did not have.
