At least for Ishikawa and the Northwest coastal areas. Here in Tokyo it wasn't bad at all, fairly ordinary, short lived albeit tilted towards the larger side, earthquake. Big enough to make me check the news but not big enough to make me look outside my window or move from my chair. I'm still feeling good about 2024, So long as everyone in Ishikawa and surrounding regions are Okay and damage is minimal.

Please confirm what you should do to be safe when you are in situation like this. Thank you for commenting kindly. It will make Japanese people feel grateful.

On vacation in Tokyo and was in hotel when it happened on the 11th floor. Building was swaying half a foot on each side, definitely one of the scariest and heart pumping things I’ve faced. A feeling of helplessness but strength in Japanese engineers. Truly the best.

This is Japanese who live in Northern Japan. Thank you for all kind comments for us. Actually, this quake impact a lot of people, not only people who live in Ishikawa prefecture. When we have one big quake first at about 4:30 pm, we thought it was just one. BUT, pretty big quake (Magnitude 6.0more) happened a lot after big one. Hopefully, even Happy New Year day, government and our emergency plan is working successfully.

Large areas of Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures were affected, and a large fire is currently raging in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, which was particularly hard hit. In addition, roads have been damaged and there are not enough people to rescue them. Serious damage is expected.

What is the wooden building technique that Japan used in which the corners were cut to join so perfectly that they survived a 9.5 hit and didn’t break apart? Some years ago it was tested to prove its strength.

I mean we get these on a roughly quarterly basis - 3 or 4 big earthquakes a year is pretty much expected. If you didn't build to withstand these earthquakes they'd fall over in a matter of months. It's by necessity not by choice.

Crazy to think I was watching the 2011 Tsunami live on CNN more than 10yrs ago at 11pm-ish PST when they aired it. This was one of only two times I felt uneasy watching live TV. The other being 9/11.

My heart goes out to the Japonese people. I pray for all those who have been directly affected by this terrible event, and their families, near and far. May they have the strength and courage to once again deal with this devastating disaster. It was a big one for sure. Most media reports here in Australia just writing it off as minimal damage as the tsunami was small. I don't think so. The earthquake was shallow and likely set up ground waves which shake buildings to pieces
