Anthony Neuer is that not only he converts the 7-10 first time in 30 Years but also he’s the first PBA Pro that converts it on a Brunswick GSX Pinsetter on TV, the GSX is the hardest pinsetter to get any pins flying out of the pit because the pit curtain and pit cushion were separated from each other. The last 3 Pros that converted the 7-10 before on tv were all on easy pinsetters (Roth & Stayrook on Brunswick A2 and Mazza on AMF 82-70) since the pit curtain and pit cushion were connected.

I myself have never made the 7-10 split, but I have come close twice on two machine types. My home center of Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence, Kansas uses Brunswick A2 machines and Brunswick MAX pins. At high school team practice once, I was faced with a 7-10 which was left as the 6 pin was rolled out, like Anthony's here. I threw my spare ball hard and straight at the 10, clipped it against the sidewall, and it rolled about halfway across the back of the pin deck before falling back down. That was the closest I had ever come to making the 7-10 split. The second close call I had was at West Ridge Lanes in Topeka, Kansas. They use GSX machines and Twister pins (Which I REALLY like because of how much they bounce around, they carry well for me). A pocket 7-10 this time, but I hit the 10 pin dead on. I actually got it to bounce back off the curtain, which is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence with these machines, and it rolled back up onto the pin deck near the 9 spot.

If look closely on the replay of Anthony's, you'd see the 10 pin bounced off the side wall, into the curtain, on to the ball & then into the 7 pin. *The key thing is the ball being at the right place, at the right time.* If that ball wasn't there to keep that 10 pin out of the pit, that 10 pin would've stayed in the pit; leaving the 7 pin.

@@DarkJak2050 Well the Kick Backs (or side walls) on the Brunswick GSX Pinsetter are different than the kick backs on the Brunswick A2 or AMF machines cause it could bring the best pin action since GSX kick backs were extended unlike kick backs on Brunswick A2 and AMF that imagine even Anthony Neuer attempts the 7-10 at the exact way but on other pinsetters but GSX, he can’t convert it cause the kick backs were not extended.

@@PinoyBowlerGS92 Was it the A2 or AMF he converted the 7-10 on in this video? *No!* Was I talking about different pin setters? *No!* I was simply pointing out that he converted the 7-10 on the GSX because of where the ball was at the time. It kept the 10 pin out of the pit & allowed it to go into the 7 pin. Even *IF* he gets the same exact bounce on the A2 or AMF by stroke of luck, the conversion wouldn't happen if the ball is in a different spot.

I have actually spared a 7-10 before as a teen many years ago when i used to bowl. I didn't even realize what a rare feat it was until years later. I literally just got a high five and we continued playing 😆

Andy after converting was still 56 pins down with 3 frames to go ... no chance. Great conversion ... but Rob Stones reaction was WAY over the top ... it wasn't Steph Curry making a 45 footer to win the game at the buzzer

Rob Stone is actually a killjoy for announcing bowling. For all the posthumous props he gets, I think Chris Schenkel rolls in his grave when Rob puts on a headset to call a bowling event. As a bowler myself (not the best as I have plenty still to work on), Rob overdramatizes every open frame, and would have done so if Neuer failed to pick this up. Yes, Anthony was on his way to being put in his place in the match he was in, but not all open frames need to be frowned upon the way Rob does so. Bowlers will tolerate opening on a low percentage split way more than chopping a spare or especially missing a single pin. The makeable spares are the ones that loom larger in a bowlers scores when they whiff those.

It’s not about the split conversation itself, it’s about the bowlers who can dominate the split conversations, & the 7-10 is the hardest. That’s why it take so long. 300 (perfect shot all through) hard. Any conversation hard. Everything else is just a game of high scoring & excitement of the crowd.

My Dad used to bowl in a league with Mark Roth at Rainbow Lanes in Brooklyn, NY. He wasn't on the same team. He in the same league and knew Mark Roth. After his pro days, Mark Roth bought the alley and it was called Mark Roth's Rainbow Lanes.

He was an asshole to me. A ten gamer at Fiesta San Jose. He was my first match. Showed up. Announced himself and told me I had no chance. He shot 233. I shot 279 and then announced my self. He finished fifth. I finished 4th.

It's a shame too, what with the advertising on the pin setter for the car maker and then naming rights sponsor for a play of the match. Geez, does everything have to have a corporate naming rights john's name attached to it. The first 3 scenes were just the bowler and the announcers. No ads to get in the way and to take away from the moment. Of course, it's not just bowling, but virtually all sports and don't forget the every-2-years advertising program that has those 5 rings so you know that you're there. Yes, I miss the times when sports were sports and not advertising platforms. /end of rant.

yeah, the announcers used to be classy and full of useful information. Now they just yell a lot and don't really say anything of value. I guess Randy Pedersen really needs the money. I'd never get on camera with that idiot he was with.

Yes! I Iike announcers that have an inkling of knowledge about our great sport ... Rob Stone and even the legend Chris Schenkel not only were clueless but made no noticeable effort to learn as the years went by. I cringe when they are in the booth.

Chris Schenkel understood enough bowling to not overdramatize every open frame the way Rob Stone does. Rob Stone treats every open frame like a kiss of death. Working next to Bo Burton, Schenkel eventually understood the high tolerance that even sub-average (yet avid) bowlers like me have for opening on a low percentage split. Failing to convert a split psychology is not as detrimental as chopping a higher percentage spare or better yet missing a single pin. Single pin misses loom larger on a bowler's score than an uncovered split as they fall in the would've could've should've category.

To be fair to Stone it has been over 30 years since the last one was made and his reaction was genuine. I love the fact that Anthony called for the pick up before it happened.

Neuer is the only bowler out of the four to shoot cross lane to convert the 7-10 (being left handed shooting for 10 pin, as opposed to right handed shooting for the 7 pin), it really is crazy that this year marks 30 years in-between the last time the split was converted!!!!

I used to manage a bowling center here in Canada and after learning how the machines worked, I always felt that was the best way to get a pin to hit the ball and bounce back out onto the pin deck. I'm really shocked that most pro's don't routinely shoot the 7-10 in that way because in my view the best way to get a pin to bounce out, it has to hit the ball and the best way for that to happen is to shoot cross lane (also depending on whether you're on the right or left lane).

Indeed. And not only that, but the most adapted strategy is to shoot away from the ball return. He went against the grain both ways!

Out of these four televised 7-10 conversions, the latest one from Anthony Neuer is the most impressive. The pinsetter used in the 2021 U.S. Open was a "GSX Pinsetter", which usually is almost mpossible to bounce out pins from it due to its very loose curtains, but somehow Anthony Neuer pulled it off flawlessly. The other 3 televised 7-10 conversions were still legendary and unbelievable to watch as well, especially the 3rd one being 30 yeears ago!!

@@Luke-1296 Well the GSX kickbacks could bring the best Pin Action cause they’re a bit longer than the kickbacks you find on a Brunswick A2 or AMF Pinspotter.

I don't even bowl, so I don't know how I ended up here. But the PURE ABSOLUTE JOY of that commentator at 4:20 is so goddamn great! God bless that guy, he makes the clip 1000x better!

He’s been commentating since 2001, and this was at basically the hardest/most important tournament of the season in the US open.

Still cant believe I just saw that 7-10 split conversion, like I've always wanted to see that on TV, that day was just amazing, definitely after almost 30 years, it was totally worth it for a lot of bowling fans, a day that i will never forget!!! JUST INSANEEEEEEEEEE

As a former Pinspotter & Lane Tech. from the 80's through 90's, seeing this stuff just makes my heart glow! I know the countless nights of pain, frustration, effort that went into making these kinds of feats possible - and without any possible reason for disqualification for what you've just seen. 12 strikes in a row in a game is another level of panic/joy that we experience when you're in charge of the equipment.

I remember watching Roth hit the 7-10 back then on TV as a kid. My brother and I watched bowling every week!

R.I.P. Mark Roth. You were a LEGEND!

The circumstances of the match gave him the luxury of just going for one pin. Who's to say he wasn't intending to make it? But in most scenarios, when leaving a low percentage split (even if it can be made), it's more strategic to just take the open frame and maximize the pin count out of it. Bowlers tend tolerate those kinds of open frames as they're not as psychologically detrimental as fanning on a single pin or chopping a makeable unsplit spare.

Man it’s great someone else finally did this on tv. I remember I was like 5 or 6 years old when i saw Stayrook did it on live tv too. That was awesome. I used to hate Stayrooks form but he’s a true gentleman. Nice guy I heard. Man that means the 30 year drought of the 7-10 on tv conversion is over! Congratulations, Neuer!

My mom bowled locally for about 15 years and she and I would watch it on TV. We saw Roth make it on TV and it got me hooked on watching it for years!

Crazy that two happened in a single year, and hasn't one been televised in nearly 30 years.

I watched Stayrook's conversion with my dad at a bowling alley bar, since he'd just finished league that morning. The entire place just went nuts.

I converted a 7-10 in league play and I love my patch! I had watched Earl Anthony demonstrate how, the day before. It worked! Cross lane as hard as I could!

Yes. And on the other end of the spectrum, I think that was the year of Del Ballard's (in)famous gutter ball too.

Showing the previous shot leading up to the Split was a great choice. Shows some tension and importance to make the Spare. :)

Prior to Neuer’s conversion in 2021, all three 7-10 splits made on television occurred in years that started on a Tuesday. (2021 started on a Friday). The first and the most recent conversions were made in years that Georgia won the national title in football (the Miami Hurricanes won the title in the year that two such conversions were made). Also, three of the four conversions were by left-handed bowlers.

I saw the Rpth 7-10 conversion on the original telecast... a 12-year-old bowling fanatic at the time and a huge Mark Roth fan. Those were the days!

It's crazy how all 4 7-10 splits hit differently! Roth's split came from the pin ejecting from the back! Mazza's split was fonr bouncing from the back! stayrook's split 7 bounce from the left and rolled into the 10! Anthony's split 10 bounce from the right onto the bowling ball rolled left into 7! All were crazy but great exciting conversions!

MARK ROTH was my favorite bowler. So cool and colected.

I nailed two of these back to back.

Isn't it funny, that a 7-10 conversion is pretty much more spectacular than a 300 game (Even though that's perfection)🤔😅🤣

Out of curiosity, I did some research on the Internet to find out the success rate of each for a PBA bowler. It turns out a professional bowls a 300 about 1 in 460 games, while making the 7-10 is about 1 in 150. I'm surprised the conversion rate for the 7-10 is that high - with odds like that, it took 30 years after the third one was made before it happened again? Apparently, though, a 300 game is somewhat harder to pull off.

@@zanti4132 assuming it's 1 out of 150 attempts. And seen as the 7-10 isn't left that often, the opportunity to pick it up is less frequent than to bowl a 300 game. Every time you start a new game you have a chance to get a 300. And converting the 7-10 is pure luck as seen in this video. You can hit the 7 pin dead on and just get a crazy bounce. Perhaps all of the conversions of the 7-10 to maintain that 1 in 150 rate occur before the televised portion of the tournament starts.

It’s much harder to do. With the best roll, you can throw 12 strikes even if it’s by accident. To get a 7-10, you need to make the one pin hop enough to kiss or drop kick the other one.

I don’t watch bowling much, but it’s crazy this has only happened 4 times on tv in the many years. These guys make it look like picking up a 7-10 is easy lol

I wouldn’t have even thought of that. The pinsetters. Wow.

when i was a young kid, like 5 or 6 my dad had a video from ABC sports called "bowling, the perfect game" and i saw mark roth make that 7-10 and thats when he became my favorite bowler, then i saw him in kingpin, and bowled with him at a pro am. Mark Roth and Earl Anthony one my favorites.

10 years between the first and second, 5 months between the second and third then 30 years between the third and fourth. Pretty wild. It also goes to show how infrequently these pros cause splits in their games.

Imagine being in such an exclusive club of athletes. But then imagine everyone calling you "The Ginger Assassin."

I've seen quite a few 7-10 splits. I play candlepin though so you can use the dead wood to assist your shot. I knew it was hard in 10 pin I just didn't realize how rare a feat it was.

I delighted in hearing Chris Schenkle's voice again!

Closest I ever got was a 6-7-10 as a 14 year old in a local league... And nobody saw it. Never picked up anything close to that again

I miss Bowling being part of saturday sports on TV. Growing up in the 70's it was on TV all the time. Once in awhile they still put it on TV and I enjoy watching it.

It was much more exciting in 2021 to pick up the 7-10 than it was years earlier, for some reason.

I met Mark Roth at rainbow lanes, Brooklyn, New York Emmons Avenue. He started there and wound up buying it. I was sitting in the restaurant when he walked in and I asked how he was doing. He always had a problem with his thumb, but never let it get to him and never affected his performance rest in peace Sir Mark Roth.

Definitely hardest spare to pick up. Harder than shooting a 300. I picked it up bowling a Friday Reno league in Pinole California, Pinole Valley Bowl. The funny shit was nobody on my team saw me pick it up but the whole other team did. They were my proof.

One of the most difficult shot in sports if not the most.

Picked 1 up during league play a long time ago. Got a nice little patch for it.

I've seen a 7-10 be made twice in my life, both times the strategy was to through thunder down at the 7 and hope you cause enough chaos to make it to slide across the back of the lane. Crazy.

I think the pin heading for the bowling ball rebound off the curtain seems the key. There's still energy in thr ball as it spins and it's solid enough to bounce off.

For any non-bowlers: I grew up around the sport and have been bowling since junior leagues 40 years ago. I've never converted the 7-10, and I can't recall ever witnessing a conversion in person. It is a very common split to leave, but even the best bowlers will chalk it up as an open. The 7-10 is often the result of a perfect shot with unlucky carry. All you can do is pick one of the two pins and heave a ball at it and cross your fingers.

I heard the same thing and had to look it up. Apparently hes from Bay city then moved to Shelby Twp at some point and then Mount Clemens. I'm about 5 miles from there myself

@@aaacomp1 he is buried in his home town of Bippus, Indiana not far from me. Bippus is a very small town of maybe two dozen ppl. It’s those small town, midwest humble beginnings that fostered a legend like him.

That was such a great call by Rob Stone. You can't fake that unbridled enthusiasm.

Most interesting part of this? The fashion of the crowds in each year.

Professuonal bowling is simultaneously memey AND legit AF. Truly the everyman's sport.

I am more amazed at the number of people in the stands watching bowling.

Weird algorithm...But I must say...worth it. Sure wish major sportsstickballhoopbasket sport commentators were as enthusiastic as the guy in the last one though.

When you see these 7-10 spares on tv, it initially seems crazy that there have only been four of them, when the pin you hit seems more than capable of flying all over the place and hitting the other one. Clearly they are so rare because bowlers good enough to be on tv very rarely actually leave the 7-10 split.

I liked the last clip, where his opponent was congratulating him. Granted the guy who picked up the 7-10 split looked to be losing anyway, but still it probably made his whole day or even career to make that on television.

I witnessed a lady in a league, around 75 years, old hit the 10 pin so slightly it slid almost standing into the 7. Her’s was smoother than the pros.

This should give you an idea of just how rare this is. It's said that one of the rarest feats in pro sports is the unassisted triple play. Between the last 2 televised 7-10 conversions(7-13-91 and 4-11-21) there have been 7 unassisted triple plays.

ah, but they have only been done 2 ways - caught ball, stepped on 2nd, tagged runner, or caught ball, tagged runner, stepped on second. Here they had a couple ways. Also weird stat - in 1927, there were assisted triple plays on consecutive days. Next one? Over 41 years later.

That's the only time Mark Roth smiled on the tour. Not really, but that really go to him. LOL OMG, that announcer on the last conversion was aggravating!

Would have never guessed it was possible on the GSX pinsetter and their hanging tarp to eliminate deadwood. I picked this up in practice once on some AMF 82 70 machines!

AMF machines seem the "bounciest" out there, with the GS series being the least. Interestingly, though, 3 of the 4 televised PBA 7-10's made were on Brunswick machines, not to mention Walter Ray's Big Four, Brian Voss' 4-6-7 (on a GSX), and Mark Williams' 4-6-7 (on an A-2).

I can't believe that this has only happened 4 times on TV. I picked up a 7-10 in league play and they told me I didn't even get a patch. What the heck. My friend and teammate made me a certificate but I really wanted a patch. I was so excited! Also I can't believe that 3 out of 4 were lefties. I'm right handed.
