6th Gen CAMARO ZL1 1LE Gets MagnaFlow Exhaust (MORE HP + CRAZY LOUD!)

The Camaro ZL1 1LE is built to be a track weapon out of the box, but you know us here at Freedom Street Garage. We want it loud! We took FSG14 over to our good friends at MagnaFlow headquarters for an exhaust upgrade, some dyno pulls and a flow meter reading. Rich and his team installed the Race Series Axle-Back exhaust giving this car more horsepower with even more of an aggressive exhaust note. Daily driver or track machine, this ZL1 is made to handle whatevers thrown at it & it could be yours 🏁 For any exhaust needs of your own, check out MagnaFlow.com.

Nice work fellas. I respect the effort it took to make this video and I enjoyed the enthusiasm. However, my comment is as follows: The designers of the OEM muffler were not incompetent. The entire point of the suitcase style muffler is to smooth airflow underneath the car as it exits from front to rear. When you remove the suitcase muffler in place of straight pipe or standard style mufflers, you are disrupting airflow and will lose speed on the top end despite any power gain. This has been verified by GM and I also have verified on my end with lap data from my track events. I know from race track experience and I've used both the suitcase muffler as well as a straight piped setup. The handful of horsepower you pick up by removing airflow restriction is negated by losing actual speed because of the parachute at the back of the car which ruins the aero profile of the car. The real power is made at the headers. By going from the OEM shorty headers to long tubes, you will pick up as much as 40hp with a tune and as much as 15-20 with no other changes. The headers are the real restriction. Removing cats will pick up 5hp and removing the suitcase may offer another 5 or so. In the case of this video, 17hp seems a bit high but it's not impossible. You won't feel that while driving but the car will indeed sound nicer. You will however, FEEL the difference with long tubes. If you're driving in a State where your exhaust must be unmodified, you're better off getting Long Tube Headers with racing cats while keeping the stock suitcase muffler. You'll pick up the 40 or so horsepower while retaining the use of your NPP valves. You'll also have cats (remove the secondaries) and will have more of a shot passing emissions inspection. All of this while not disrupting the aerodynamics of the car.

Shouldn’t the flow meter be on the exit of the muffler to see the flow exiting rather than going in? To me the physics of the expansion chamber on the bigger muffler would allow more air to flow into it but not flow out as the outlets are all the same size. Just my thinking.
