#66 Detailed Pigment Mixing & Painting with 3 Different Pouring Mediums | Acrylic Paint Pouring

Acrylic Pouring Blooms Technique Inspirational Tutorial Video.
paint pouring, the painted dreamer, abstract fluid art, shelee art style, no silicone, fluid acrylics, acrylic pouring techniques, fluid art tutorials, abstract acrylic pouring Art, Pour Painting, fluid painting, house paint art, swipes, blooms
In this video I’m showing you how I mix up 2 different pigments in both of the pouring mediums I always use as well as a new one I’m testing out that I really like how it’s working with pigments. I wanted this video to be thorough so that’s why it’s long. I wanted to walk you through all the steps, show you everything and what to look for, paint with you to show you the PM differences and also show how they look wet and dry. I hope you enjoy watching this half as much as I enjoyed creating it! 😊 Thanks so much for watching! ❤️❤️
A lot of what you see being created on my channel when ready will end up in my Etsy store. Some pieces if they translate well to digital will also make it to my RedBubble and Society6 shops so if you see a design you like please check out my links below.👇🏻😊💜

    Since doing this video, some observations I’ve noticed (I learn every day too 😊), some pigments just need to be disbursed and mixed longer to get all of the pigment fully disbursed. Also, if you are seeing some graininess, some is normal especially against white but too much, let your newly mixed pigments sit overnight or up to 24 hours to fully incorporate before using. 😊💜

    I'm not trying to be negative. I'm new at this and dont unstand why we cant or can just use the pouring mediums that's made for the paints ? And when did all the house paints an ploy an varnish an so on come into play. I love your work. Just trying to understand. Thank you so much.

    @@valeriedean7661 Great question Valerie :) .. So the blooms technique is a completely different wheelhouse then just your regular acrylic pours (flip cups, straight pours etc.) and was designed by a woman named Shelee Carruthers who was looking for a PM and paint base that would hold up better and be more elastic than traditional PMs so she came up with what is known as the blooms technique and all the house paint ingredients that go along with it. She uses Australian products as that's where she is located but I've experimented with a lot of the US brands to find the best that work for this technique, so that's the why. You can probably use traditional pouring mediums (Liquitex, golden, etc.) but I'm not sure they'll hold up as well or dry as nice. I do have that on my list to experiment with eventually. If you haven't noticed, I love experimenting haha! Hope this helps shed some light :)

    Love this demo. Very informative. Thank you so much. FYI the Primary Elements only need a ¼ tsp. of pigment to I ounce of pouring medium. Also, they don’t need to be stirred as much as you did (unless you enjoy it) and only the reds and browns need extra stirring because they are harder to break down into a fine dry powder. As far as pouring medium goes, the Colourarte Vivid Enamel is ideal for your needs. If you’re doing a Bloom, the Poly Pour already has the varnish you need and works perfectly. You can also use it with other pigment powders and tube paints. I love your videos. Keep them coming.

    Thank you so much Judy I appreciate that! And thank you for the tips on the ColourArte Art pigments and the poly pour. I have used the poly pour in the past and just wasn’t too keen on it as it didn’t react the way I wanted it to but I might give it another go 😊. I know a lot of people like to use their specific PM for the blooms and wanted to show that. Good to know about the reds & browns, I’ll keep that in mind! Thanks so much for the support & tips, keep me honest! 🥰

    I bought some Colour Arte pigments about 3 years ago and, although they were pretty, I wasn't getting the results I expected after seeing a few videos with them (I used US Floetrol PM). I set them aside until I felt better about incorporating them. In the meantime I have tried lots of experiments to see what was "wrong". I watched this video a few weeks ago and knew I had to try PM #3 with my Colour Arte Pigments. Oh my, I don't think I have ever smiled so much mixing paint! Beautiful. Thank you so very much! This will have me incorporating Colour Arte in everything. I can't wait to see how lovely my test pieces come out. Waiting until tomorrow though, to let the newly mixed pigments settle. 💜 A question I have is that is appears that the "channels" that are often created with CA are far less pronounced in the piece you did with PM #1. Is that just an illusion because it is not as shiny or is it truly not as pronounced?

    No worries at all, happy to answer 🤗. The cell activator is just the black and or white I put on at the end or put on my swiping tools. The pouring medium I use is mixed with all my color paints except the cell activator(s). Check out the description box in each of my videos I detail everything used for that piece if that helps. Also, high level for the techniques I do the white I lay down first, the pillow or base paint, is usually always white but it’s a low sheen interior white wall paint. The pouring medium I mix in with my acrylic paints and pigments is a mix of a gloss untinted house paint & a water based polyurethane gloss varnish The cell activator is what is used last and I use either Australian floetrol or US floetrol and paint for this depending on the video. Again check the particular videos description box for everything used in that video. Hope this helps explain 🤗

    Hi Danett! Just answered your DM on FB too, you don’t want to use glueall at all in your PM for the blooms technique. Behr is already super thick adding a glue will only thicken it further. Try just using the Behr and the Polycrylic either at a ratio of 2:1 or 2:1.5, that will work much better for you if you don’t have the jo sonja 😊

    The white Glidden base I use is the “pillow” portion for this technique, it floats your other colors and essentially what you want is a low sheen (satin or eggshell but not flat) white latex wall paint for its buoyancy and stretch. You could try with an acrylic paint thinned down but it really won’t give the same buoyancy as house paint. If you decide to experiment with different wall paints maybe buy small containers to try until you find one you like, it saves a bit 🤗

    Hi Jodi. Thanks so much, this is a great video. I've come here in the hope of learning about wetting/dispersing pigments. I'm having problems with different pigments but particularly Colourarte and flocculation. I'm presuming I'm just not doing a good enough job of the initial mixing, but looking at how long you spent mixing I'm sure I've been doing it longer. I'm in the UK so can't follow your recipes exactly but what I might try is using the PM, rather than what I'm doing at present which is wetting with varnish then addding my untinted paint. It's frustrating cos I have some lovely pigments and really want to use them. I think it's also posssible I've been using to much of the untinted base ratio to pigment. Anyway thanks for doing this and hopefully if I get it right you'll see something on the Sheleee FB group 🤞

    @ThePaintedDreamer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Glad to help! The Behr is very thick yes and when you are in colder temps it can be “thicker” unfortunately I deal with that issue being in Chicago area. For me the Behr/JS was too thick for tube paints I couldn’t get it to work that way. The Behr/Glidden/JS works much better but keep in mind the Glidden has some titanium white in it. I’ve been working with Behr/JS/Poly recently and while it’s still thick for some tube paints others it’s ok, depends on the paint consistency and for fluid and pigments it works great. That may also be the case for just the Behr/JS, it may work well with just fluids & pigments. With a thicker PM in order for it to dry well enough paint needs to be spun or tilted off the canvas otherwise there might be some cracking and shifting of cells unfortunately. You could also try covering your pieces as they dry if you don’t already, it’s supposed to help with more even drying. Hope this helps! 😊

  • @ThePaintedDreamer

    @ThePaintedDreamer

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Wendy 😃👋🏻 so the Glidden was one of the first bases I started using as a beginner bloomer as it just responded so well, the cells it made spectacular. It did dull some colors when wet but dried beautifully however any pigments used with it did dull and dried to a more subtle sheen. I still dig that look for certain things I’m creating if I don’t want in your face bling. I started experimenting with the Behr and using the Behr alone was just too much gloss and the cells were weird so I started combining the two bases as it helped brighten up the Glidden colors and pigments and also to help thin the Behr. That was my original intent when I was using it a lot. I think for a beginner who doesn’t have a lot of money to spend but wants stupendous cells the Glidden still has it’s place for sure. 🤗💜

If your untinted base is thicker then you want to use a thinner varnish so you don’t add to much to that thickness before you even mix in your color. • @ThePaintedDreamer

    @ThePaintedDreamer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Patricia - the infinity and Behr untinted bases are here in the US at Home Depot. Unfortunately I don’t know equivalents in France but basically for the blooms technique for your pillow you want a low sheen white interior wall paint. For your PM base you want a gloss or high gloss untinted base paint (something they use to tint at the store a really dark color or black) along with a water based polyurethane gloss varnish. Then the cell activator is a mix of Australian Floetrol and Amsterdam paint. If the blooms is something you are really interested in I highly recommend the Shelee art course, this is where I learned the technique myself however at the time I took it in late 2019 I had to figure out all my own products for the US. The course has expanded and they include products from different countries that work well so that may help save you some time and money as opposed to experimenting with different paints yourself. Hope this helps! 🤗💜

    So, I use Karen’s recipe (Waterfall Acrylics) which has been tweaked again. Just Behr 8300 and Minwax Polycrylic. But when I mix my pigments I take pure Jo Sonja and wet the pigments that way. Same deal as you. Cover the bottom of the container, and then add pigment. Wear the dust mask for sure. Stir. Stir. Stir. Then I add the PM of Behr/Polycrylic. In the end our chemistry may be close to being the same. I thin with Jo Sonja and not the Polycrylic. With this PM, I have had zero issues mixing tube paints. When do you add yours? To the bottom of the cup and then add the PM? Or to the PM? I mix mine like pigments. Bottom of cup. Little PM. Then more PM. Probably 1” of tube paints. The easiest mix is the Golden fluid acrylics. I add those at any time. About 1 or 2 pearls. I love both TLP and Colourarte pigments equally. BUT Colourarte doesn’t need that much work to incorporate them. In fact, I can take those pigments and add to my PM and just stir. Take any of that for whatever it’s worth. 😉 I appreciate your talking and no music. Thank you!

    I just took a screen shot of your comment I’m totally trying how you mix pigments and tubes with the Behr, thank you for this! When I mixed the tube paints with the Behr/JS/poly PM I did what I normally do with my other PMs which is add a little PM at the bottom so the paint doesn’t stick to it. Add maybe a 1/2 to 3/4” of tube then add more PM and mix it up adjusting as I go. I haven’t given up on the Behr alone for tubes yet I plan to test more for sure! I noticed the same thing about the ColourArte pigments, they are easier to mix up than the TLP. I’m also going to try out how you mix your pigments because that’s what I do haha! I work on small material for two reasons. Number 1 the blooms technique, especially for beginners is very tricky to do on bigger canvas so I like to showcase that you start out small and work your way up. Number 2, when I’m testing things I don’t want to waste an expensive or large canvas on something that is merely for testing purposes. Does that make sense? I do use bigger canvases and have done so in other videos but I also have limitations in how big I can go, my biggest so far is 11”x14” and I’m pretty proud of that! I’ll get there 😊💜
