First, to qualify my answer, I am a professional musician, classically-trained violinist from age nine, and earned a living singing and playing guitar. I started out with an inexpensive 3/4-size violin, then, after just a few years, while a high school student my parents bought me a beautiful instrument made by John Friedrich & Sons in 1914. I still play and adore it to this day, sixty years later. I once played on a 16th century Amati that would fetch a cool 600K today. I began my career with an inexpensive Mexican, then Japanese guitar, then have owned two Tamuras, a Cordoba Gypsy Kings and a Ramirez. To answer your question, I follow the dictum of Stephen Stills to "Love the one you're with." My favorite is the one I'm listening to. Which would I favor in the studio? The best-sounding one, of course. On the road, the one that combines great tone, great feel with solid dependability. On the concert stage, I'd go with tone, feel and looks. So then give me them to play, and I'll tell you which one feels the best, has the best action, the smoothest neck. Frankly, I prefer the neck and action of my Gypsy Kings over my more valuable Ramirez. As for tone, again, I'd need to hear each one blind, the way I chose my first professional guitar. Of the dozen I tried, I preferred the sound of the least expensive (the Tamura, at $450) over that of all but the most expensive, the Kohno 10 at $1,100. I didn't see the price tags until I'd played them all. Okay, I was able to switch, using my laptop's mouse, from first to last, and hearing the ukes through my JBLs and yes, the last sounded better (larger-volume body, higher quality of build, better wood, and more sophisticated acoustic tuning and design -- of course it's going to sound better. And it was certainly more elegant and more beautiful to look at. No contest. Then, of course, there's the question of practicality, weighing all the factors, giving each one weight according to value against cost: how much more am I willing to pay for what I'll be getting? Best answered like to the question, "How many attorneys does it take to screw in a light bulb?" Answer: "How many can you afford?" That having been answered, let me live with, say, the upper four for an hour or so, blindfolded, and I may change my mind. That first Tamura did.

@@guitardzan5641 Thank you kindly. I cannot say that I excel as a performer, as I do have friends who are truly exceptional -- as singers, guitarists, songwriters and composers. I can say that I am blessed to have many talented friends. One day I was YouTubing and came across Etta James on Austin City Limits, and who should I see at the Hammond B3 but my good buddy, David K. Mathews. The very next day, as he came up the stairs to a session I bowed deeply and intoned, "I am not worthy, I am not worthy." Yes, I'm blessed. He truly elevated the tracks he played on. As a performer, I did carve out my own niche in the Bay Area as a strolling musician (singer/guitarist) and did well, not necessarily because of my musicianship, which was certainly okay, but because I enjoy people, and always tried to make it personal. And loving what you do goes a long way. I've gotta relate one anecdote. I was strolling in a tiny cafe, when in came a "flower girl," a lovely young woman selling flowers from a basket. Seeing the beautiful roses she bore, I finished the Neil Diamond song I was singing and went into "The Rose." She, in turn, set her basket down and proceeded to interpret the lyrics in Sign. She was like a dancer; it was stunning! Honest, it was difficult to keep my composure at the end. A number of patrons didn't even try to control theirs. Did I say I love what I do?

As a pre-teen player my first instrument purchase was an inexpensive but reliably tuned ukulele. Eventually I graduated to 6 string guitar. Later I also played Double Bass, and switched over to primarily multi keyboard setups. Ultimately when I attempted to return to the uke it was considerably cramped to articulate fingerings. I adapted a yamaha acoustic guitar, fitting it with nylon strings (for the 'plunky' timbre) and a pseudo Nashville tuning (lowest or E-A-D strings are tuned an octave higher) and I can attach the capo at the fifth fret when I accompany my grandson as he uses his ukelele. Incidentally, I use lighter gauge strings where needed and only the low E is a wound string trying to keep the tone consistent. It also plays well with other acoustic guitars since similar fingerings provide varied voicings when you are camp-firing Eagles, James Taylor, Lynnyrd, Jason Mraz, etc.

I have Deluxe Kamakas and I also have Kalas, Ohanas, and Mainland ukes. It's true that the Kamakas have the richer, more refined and balanced tone. But, the other ukes are fun to play too, and to my ear, can even sound better playing various tunes. I have a UC3 Collings which equals its Kamaka counterpart, and a Martin which comes close. But, with a decent set up, and good strings, just about any uke can be enjoyable to play!

I agree with others. The Kookies & Kream isn't my taste in looks, but it really sounded sweet. Definitely more complex harmonics. Maybe the shallower body and lower volume is part of it. It's not as loud as the others, but sounds fantastic.

At first, and while reading the comments I was thinking "yeah, at some point they're gonna sound the same" but I was surprised that they're actually quite different. Even if you factor out the Low G / High G difference and potato microphone. But at some point it does mostly come down to the tone of the wood and the size of the body causing the major difference in sound

Very nicely done. Yes, even through my little phone speaker, I could hear subtle changes in tone, and fullness of sound. I have an Aklot tenor low G. It is just right for me. The low G takes away some of the twang, and that is more pleasant and a little fuller to me. Thank you. Take care, Bob

The craftsmanship and woods of the upper echelon were lovely, but once you get past the $130 uke, there's not enough improvement in sound to warrant the expense. BTW, I just can't get used to the sound of a uke with a low G string. I think that does take away from the sound. And although I realize that the lower bottom string enables easier arrangement of some tunes, I like the challenge of the quirky standard tuning (high G).

I beg to differ. There are really big differences using different wood and how they are made. I've played with most of those brands and different brands have different sounds. Like the kamaka for instance, more sharp compared to koalohas more round.

The Devine, and the Cookies and Cream, were both maple sides and back. I favor their sound over the others. This is a surprise to me since I'm a big fan of koa wood. I own a 1917 all koa body C. F. Martin & Co. guitar (VERY expensive and even more rare). I also have a 1969 hand made guitar that is made from all old growth woods and big leaf maple is used for the sides and back - it has a creamier, more melodic clear and pure tone than any other guitar I have ever heard. Luthiers know good tone wood when they hear it and the makers of the Devine and the makers of the Cookies and Cream made an excellent choice of wood. Thank you for this video.

In person they sound much different. In a noisy shop, or a busy ukulele get together, you might not hear the difference but on a quiet Saturday morning, with fresh ears some of those sound like real musical instruments rather than toys. You can hear the harmonics really sing! On top of that, some of those are works of art and a beauty to behold...

What this video demonstrates more than anything, IMO, is that once you get to the solid wood handmade instruments by the top Hawaiian brands (Kamaka, Koaloha, Kanile’a) which start around $1200 to $1500 you’ve pretty much hit the upper limit of what can be achieved in tone. Subtle differences will exist based on construction methods and exotic tone woods such as the mango shown here, but other than that you’re paying for the ornamentation, the more elaborate wood patterns, and extensive handwork that goes into making these instruments so beautiful. A $1300 Kamaka sounds virtually indistinguishable from a $6,000 Kamaka, and plays every bit as well.

All about finish. They all sound fairly similar. I only began to hear much of a noticeable difference at the $6K level. So mostly it's all eye candy. I want one that looks exactly like a Martin D-45 with a single cutaway. Tenor size would be marvelous.

Kanil'a K1 Tenor has such a beautiful finish and sounds so bright. Brilliant Uk. Kamaa HF-3DC sounds like no other I've listened to; hey, I am no specialist in the field of Uk's but in thinking of trying one as opposed to a guitar THIS is the one I would go for. Now ... the issue of $3,150? That could be a deeper issue ... LOL :-) The DeVine Tenor Kasha takes the biscuit, that's for sure, but (for me) that's a fantasy in ownership for me so my love for it ends there.; however, I can still dream

Not too long ago, I saw a similar video, comparing 5 different violins priced from about $165, to I think it was like $2.1 million, in a blind test, where they didn’t reveal which was which until the end. I’m just an old country boy, from the sticks; but my wife and I both nailed all 5, quite easily, and I think most anyone could. The differences were startlingly vast. Perhaps this comparison merely had too many that were close together, because the more expensive ukuleles were very obviously superior, at least to my ear. That last one was just sublime, in the complexity of its tone.

  • @JohnOhkumaThiel

Excellent video! While there’s a definite difference between the cheapest ones and those costing twice as much, and the more expensive they got the more beautiful the instruments which also sounded better, as they got into the high end there was less difference. But even the cheap ones played fine. Basically, it’s a demonstration of the Law of Diminishing Returns.

After some careful listening I think the "Kookies and Kreme" is the best guitar. Almost all of the Ukuleles had either a sustain problem or phasing problem. I believe the thin body gave it the top sound of the K&K ($4900). If I was a manufacturer I would go with the shallow body on all my Uke's and as a side note would also put any electronics in the upper left portion of the Ukulele, current positioning of electronics at the waist of the body interferes with play-ability.
