If I had to guess, the Surprise Trades are called like that, because you can Wonder Trade while doing normal gameplay. Any other Wonder Trades from other games locks you in a menu or location.

Oh man, talking about Pokemon cries really brought me back. One time I was on the phone with a friend when Gold and Silver had just released. I could hear his game and I kept telling him what he encountered and he started getting freaked out and asked if I was at his window or something.
