How To Test DIAC DB3 / DIAC Function Explained. a diac is a bidirectional semiconductor switch that can be turned on in both forward and reverse polarities above a certain voltage: it is often used to provide defined switching for a triac. The name DIAC comes from the words DIode AC switch. The DIAC is an electronics component that is widely used to assist even triggering of a TRIAC when used in AC switches and as a result they are often found in light dimmers such as those used in domestic lighting. These electronic components are also widely used in starter circuits for fluorescent lamps. A DIAC is a diode that conducts electrical current only after its breakover voltage (VBO) has been reached. DIAC stands for “Diode for Alternating Current”. A DIAC is a device which has two electrodes, and it is a member of the thyristor family. DIACs are used in the triggering of thyristors. The figure below shows a symbol of a DIAC, which resembles the connection of two diodes in series

DIACs come in a variety of formats.     Thank You!! Its brilliant and simple the way you explained. The Diac makes the adjusting circuit like that of a PWM for AC circuits like we use IC 555 as PWM for DC variable voltage regulator.

    Haseebji, one more thing is that depending on the Triac Voltage and current capacity we can change the Diac and the resistors (higher wattage) to control more powerful AC machinery. As increase in amplitude of the PWM is increase in power. I just want to know if this line of thinking is correct. If possible please reply.

    I have a failed magnetic mixer, which has a variable resistor to change speed. I came across this diode, which seemed defective, since it wouldn't test as a normal diode. Now I am not sure if it is the problem. I had de-soldered it from the circuit to try to test it. May have to do a similar test to what you did. Since it is bi-directional, it can obviously be soldered back into the circuit in either direction. Is this a common failure, or am I looking at the wrong thing here. There is a red LED which still comes on when the mixer is turned on, but the motor doesn't spin. If I can find a replacement quickly, I may just buy one and replace it anyway.

    most of time it becomes short circuit, in rare cases it becomes open, it is to be tested as i performed in this video might be the circuit have triac or transistor, that must be verified

    Hi sir i hv a faulty hot air station n i found a faulty triac n changed it for the heat gun but after changing it im still hving the same problem my heat gun is still glowing red n i csnnot adjust the temp for it. Could this be faulty?

    it is DB3 and DB4 DB3 is DIAC 30V +/- 2Volt DB4 is DIAC 40V +/- 5volt while DB13 is SDIAC Bilateral Voltage triggered Switch Breakover Voltage:95-330Volts
