60103 & 60163 at a chaotic Carlisle 27 10 21

Chaos reigned at Carlisle with many trains cancelled because of flooding threats, the trains that did run were speed restricted and therefore running late - not to mention desperately crowded.
However, Tornado brought her special in from Middlesbrough ahead of time and Flying Scotsman, who never fails to draw the crowds even in vile weather, took her out again on schedule.
Towards the end of the day I ran into a problem myself - you'll have to watch the video to see what it was! - but a chance encounter with an old friend whom I haven't seen for months enabled me to complete the film - so, my very warmest thanks to him.

    Wonderful video again from yourself thoroughly enjoyed watching from a nice warm fireside instead of all that rain. Platform 1 does not lend itself to a great video of the arrival of these locos and the sound of the diesel drowned out the sound of Tornado. Glad I went last week instead of this time but I suppose lots of school children got great enjoyment being there this time. Love the smell of the timber trains passing through the station and being wet maybe enhanced that effect. I live in Dumfries as well so done some videoing and photography down at the Nith. Bad but not as bad as I have seen it Take care and thanks again for making the journey and posting your videos great stuff John K.

    Platform 4, north end, offers the best overall view of approaching steam trains but the risk of a southbound train arriving and blocking the view completely is ever present. Number 1 is at least free from the problem. I had great difficulty getting home from Carlisle yesterday (Thursday) as the line was completely closed by teatime - indeed, very little was running from Carlisle to anywhere other than Newcastle. The Tyne Valley line seemed not to have been affected. I see there's still nothing running between Dumfries and Carlisle this morning. Well, that's more or less it for 2021 - very little left on the steam front in this part of the world until the 2022 season opens. Best wishes.

    Not a nice day - but not nearly as bad as today (Thursday) with much of the railway coming to a halt - I got home with difficulty using a bus service which had to be re-routed because of floods. By 5 p.m. the Tyne Valley line was pretty well the only decent service left from Carlisle.

    It was a trying day in many ways but - overcoming the problems is what it's all about. The friends who bailed me out with the spare card had to travel back to Preston jammed into the entrance vestibule of a desperately crowded Pendolino - I had a carriage on a Scotrail 156 shared with just two other people to get me back to Dumfries. Sometimes the gods are with us!

    What drama, and so well captured, Tim. Congratulations also on reaching 1000 subscribers. I'd often wondered why Platform 1 appeared disused, assumed it was surplus to requirements and simply the furthest away from the entrance. Well recovered from your "card full" situation. My new camera records to "solid-state disk" (SSD) because the write speeds on SD cards are too slow for many of its recording modes and CFast cards are ludicrously expensive. I managed to head out with my camera, but leaving my SSD attached to my laptop, so that was a lesson learned for me too. I now normally leave the SSD mounted to the camera and access it with a long cable. I have a spare SSD to mitigate "disk full" situations and I've just purchased the fastest SD card available as a fall back if all else fails. I had my own drama and comedy with these excursions and another mammoth editing task. I'm thankful for the November break, not least because my car broke down again and this time it may need to be replaced.

    Many thanks. Yes, we learn the hard way! I have both spare camera and spare cards - but not with me on the day. You may be sure that I carry both in my rucksack ever since that embarrassment. Since I have ample backup both at home and online, it was a simple job to clear space on the existing 256Gb card for future use. Sorry to hear about your car problems. I dread the same thing happening to me since a) I live in the sort of rural location where a car is absolutely essential b) I'm no longer in a position to replace the existing vehicle should it die on me. Without a car my filming would certainly come to an end. Not a happy thought. And on that cheerful note, I'll wish you well and take my leave.

    Why are the platforms being re-built? Have they got around to replacing the damaged buffer stop on the bay platform yet? The platform at the South end on the far side normally used by trains on the coast line; I can’t remember the number. Nice shots, pity about the weather.

    Lovely 47 type locomotive, but it's some 100 tons of extra weight for the steam loco to drag along: why?

  • @schoolshorts

    @schoolshorts

    2 жыл бұрын

    Several possible reasons - there may be a requirement for electricity (catering, for example) which a steam loco cannot provide, slippery rail conditions, where the extra power could prevent delays caused by the steamer's struggle with adhesion problems - and, let's face it - Flying Scotsman has not been the most reliable of engines in recent months, having to be bailed out by diesels on a number of occasions.
