I was 37 when I started medical school (after 15+ years in nursing all the while thinking about medicine). If it’s really what you want, then do it! Life should not be lived with regrets. If you are not sure it’s what you, do your research. Medical school takes time, money, and commitment and you don’t want to make that investment only to figure out its not what you expected.

Thanks, doc! You are so right... Often times, people take age older than mid 23 to be a weakness for medical school. Being older can be a great asset. You develop the certainty that this is the profession you want and the maturity to pursue a rigorous curriculum. Thanks again!

What about residency? Do residency programs “discriminate” against older aged med school applicants? You have to match in a residency in order to put your hard earned medical doctorate (md) to work. It would be devastating to complete 4 years of medical school and not match. Of course there are younger applicants who don’t match. It’s devastating to not match. An MD is kinda useless by itself clinically. You can not Segway into PA or Nursing training with it either. You must go back to the drawing board and apply to these programs as a new applicant. You have to go back to school. You take a risk going to medical school because it’s all or nothing. I’d say the older applicant has to be willing to take more the risk of not matching in a residency. Not saying that they won’t successfully match especially into FM or Peds. Many older applicants have great passion and longevity. Working as an Attending MD is their “retirement”. It’s just that everyone speaks about making it to med school, when matching in a residency is the real gate you’re working towards opening to become a practicing Physician.

After how much I research in youtube, I realized that its so common for people who claimed to be "too old" to just go and attend anyway. That should be a great motivator too. It's never too late to start :)

Hello I want to ask you something. Whenever I visit any hospital or see any doctor i feel like they have huge importance and respect so I should do it & everyone needs a doctor. So is it a good reason for pursuing med school ?

  • 4 жыл бұрын

Hi Suraj! Sorry for the delayed response. I, like many doctors, pursued medicine because I felt it was the best way that I could help others. Being viewed as an important person and getting respect from others was not a consideration. The reason is that respect does not merely come from a title. Respect is something that anyone, doctor or not, has to earn by being kind and respectful to others. If you are considering a career in medicine, ask yourself if you would do it even if you got no feedback from anyone. What you do in life should fulfill you enough so that when the tough times come that you still find it a positive and meaningful purpose. Good luck to you!

True you'll still be alive but if you start for instance at 32 and don't finish residency till 41, that's more than half your life already gone assuming you're lucky enough to live until 80. If you want to retire early say at 60, you only have about 19 years of potential for income. This is further exacerbated by the fact that you have to literally give up your entire 30's to become a doctor, especially if you already invested half/most of your 20's as well (my particular situation). If you haven't traveled before starting med school, you can also forget about that until you finish residency. I know there are people who say you can balance it, this and that, but that's for the minority of people who have superb time management skills. I'm not trying to discourage anyone, just laying out the reality of needing to go into this with eyes WIDE open and realizing how much more you're willing to sacrifice for that degree/title.

  • 4 жыл бұрын

Valid points, Nathan. In that case, one needs to determine if medicine is truly a passion. If a person feels like s/he is giving up too much of life to pursue medicine, I'd say that medicine is probably not the route for that person.
