Pretty nice! You always see a bunch of these in trains today. Modern modellers would need a whole bunch, so I hope MT releases a LOT of numbers for them!

THAT WAS FANTASTIC.. And I bet Microtrains adopted the Concept on there 36's from there 33" inch wheels between the wheels Microtrains uses a plastic shafts there not bad but on my 33's you can see the wheel as ruff kind of texture to it and when I used them acouple times John it sounded like they where scraping my Rails a bit but the cones on end of the Axles since there not made out of metal they dont have or on mine they didn't have any flashing like I've seen on some metal wheels but the way Microtrains made the Car Gotta say John Damn thats some Really cool craftsmanship.. Hope they make more of it.. Allen

Very impressive Micro Trains, keep it up,I'll be buying more of your releases. This is a real step up from their former design model, lowered ride height, separate door castings make these models superb, much more prototypical. Their best by far!!!

I know people go hog wild over body mounted couplers, which is prototypical. However in model railroading we all have to remember we are using curves that are significantly tighter then anything found IRL. As such the body mounted coupler, while prototypical, will NOT couple up on a curve, however truck mounted ones will. So while its cool to have body mounted ones like this, operationally they don't work as well as truck mounted when dealing with curves (in any scale).

I can see how using a minimum radius that's also extremely unprototypical could lead someone to that conclusion. That's why it's best practice to have as large of a min. radius as your space permits. If your space is such that you have to use truck mounted couplers, you may also want to avoid six axle and larger steam power.

@@tsgmultimedia Most N locomotives are rated to a 9 3/4" curve, some exceptions but most will take that tight curve that Atlas makes (spookshow's reviews help a lot too). Even Kato's Uni-Track system follows similar curves as well. Atlas's 9 3/4" and 11" curves are the same curve degree, so if a locomotive can handle the 11, it should be able to handle the other as well. Those two curves are what allow N scale to get two lanes of track to turn around inside 24", something HO could only ever dream of. The 19" curve is the shallowest from Atlas, and that one body mounted couplers...sorta work and can hook back up. However, most layouts are going to have the 11" in them, even the large club layouts will (whether that be by flex track or fixed). Locomotives have all body mounted couplers on them these days, which makes hooking back up to a train after something let go, all that more difficult. So while body mounted couplers are more prototypical, operationally, they are impractical for most layouts.

@@tsgmultimedia I would suggest to anyone planning an N scale layout right now that wants to run long cars and locos and have body-mounted couplers to have no smaller than 15" radius on your layout. My layout has 18" radius and I never had to worry about what couldn't run on it.

Metal wheels? I did not realize they were providing them with metal wheels now. I am a huge fan of micro-trains. But not so much for their prototypical releases, more for the fantasy items. From a prototypical point of view, how do they compare to the Atlas N scale items you have reviewed in the past?

  • @tsgmultimedia

I think I mentioned in the spotlight that this is as good as any piece of rolling stock I've seen in N Scale. The one caveat to that is some of Atlas's reruns of BLMA rolling stock come with all that end detail attached at the factory. In that case slight edge to Atlas because you don't have to do the work :))
