60 Days with the Kia EV6 - owner's thoughts

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

UPDATE- check out my 2 year EV6 review video:
• KIA EV6 - 2 YEARS LATE...
I've owned my 2022 Kia EV6 Wind AWD w/ Tech Package for a little over 60 days. In this amateur video, I cover some of the great features/characteristics:
Driving Dynamics, HDA, Interior, Drive modes, Looks, etc.
and some of the items that are in need of improvement:
media controls, audio, layouts, lighting, etc.
Leave a comment on what you like and dislike about this car. I am always working to improve my production quality, but it's a slow process that will evolve soon.

I am 6’5 and on the larger side. I test drove an EV6 GT-Line AWD awhile back and loved it. If anyone seeing this is around my size, don’t get a sunroof. They take up a lot of headroom. But I fit pretty well. I would go for the Wind AWD without the sunroof for sure. I fit in the second row comfortable behind my driving position (all the way back and all the way down lol). It’s my next car for sure.

The better would have offered the sunroof of IONIQ 5 instead. We have also decided against the small and not really useful accessory. Same as for the Meridian Soundsystem, because we have a dog sitting where the bass reflex box sits. 😎😜

Another argument if you are going to go all-wheel drive because that reduces range is to go with the wind line and not the GT all wheel drive because the GT all wheel drive comes with 20 inch wheels which you really don't get that good range versus the 19 in so you're sacrificing an additional 25 versus what it's rated

Emad. The track change directions are deliberate and actually correct. Think of it this way, all playlists, albums, song collections, on any streaming service play from top to bottom. The next track in your playlist or any list in general, is always below the current track playing. All songs play in order of top to bottom. So when you push down, you're going down the list, to the next track. The way Hyundai and KIA do track selection is how it should be going forward. Especially when you use Android Auto/Apple Carplay and you're viewing your playlists, they have the songs listed out vertically. When you push down you are moving down that list. This is highly intuitive and thought out. We no longer associate track selection with tapes or CDs where you used left and right for track selection (or top going to next track and pushing bottom to previous). Rather we now have song lists. And these songs lists are in order or top to bottom.

Another big thing for me that I loved about this car today after test driving it, is that I can spread my knees to sides. This is one of the best reviews I’ve seen on the ev6 and I’ve watched like 100 now. I agree with your assessments almost across the board, but at your complaint at 11:00 - the song up/down thing tripped me up the first time I was in the car, however, most music apps do play down the list, so I would argue that Kia got it right on this one. It’s more intuitive (even if they and everyone else got it wrong before). The first song on albums is at the top of the list. I wanted to hate too, but it actually follows logic. Either way, it would be great if kia could allow the user to customize wether up was last song or next song. Also, I was tired of hearing other reviewers complain that the controls for hvac and audio were shared. I think it’s a great idea. However once you pointed out that as a touch screen wrong buttons are easy to press - hmm- not great. Also, super surprised there’s no ambient lighting. Wow. I was looking forward to that. Oh well. I am a brand new Rivian R1T pickup owner and am not happy with the driving feel of the car/truck. Its an amazing vehicle for offroading and camping and such but there are only two levels of regen and they are both so strong. I went up to test drive an EV6 and found it to be a better daily driver. You are not the only one that is obsessed with the regen adjustment with the paddle shifters. In my test drive I found I was using different levels for different traffic conditions and even instantly adding some more regen like downshifting when needing to slow down for a car in front but then going back down for ease of drive when the road cleared up. This would be impossible or at least impractical if adjustment was in a menu on a screen somewhere. Then coast mode is also amazing on a flat road with no cars in front. Vehicle just rolls with almost no resistance like putting your ice car in neutral and is just a joy some times. One thing you could have covered more is how best to place your phone to plug into that one usb port way down low under the front dash to connect to Android auto. Its really a problem right now and I assume wireless connection will be available on the next iteration which is why they didn't address it with this version. Its also really hard to get your arm up front under that big center counsel to monkey with things too. Good video thanks for the info.

  • @Emadifications

    @Emadifications

    Жыл бұрын

Hey hey! I agree with you on Regen. I think it was a good idea to make the paddles Regen toggles. I use them a lot. I haven't put much time into coast mode, but I think I need to try it more. From what I remember, it feels like the car is just gliding. 0 resistance. As for the phone Android auto situation, I basically put my phone on the wireless charger when I'm using wireless Android auto through my Motorola MA1. Now the annoying part is when I'm connected via wire, and putting my phone on the charger and plugged just seems... Redundant and makes my phone hot. So now when I'm wired and plugged in, I put my phone face down to the wireless charger and leave it. Sure, I could turn off wireless charging on the car, but I would be toggling it non stop due to random usage. Appreciate the comment and the suggestion!! Thanks for watching.

Agree with everything you said. The only thing I would add as a positive is being able.t to activate lane centering without having cruise control on. As for the asking you to put your hands on the wheel, my theory is that it ask you to do that after a certain number or length of time of inputs the car has to do, so on straights that's a long time and on curves it's almost immediate.

  • @Emadifications

I don't know how the interior light kit is implemented, but it's important to note that the door sill option is self-powered by its own battery, and involves attaching a magnet to the underside of the door frame to trigger the sill plate's light. It's kind of attractive, with the Kia logo and everything, but frankly the whole thing seems a little Mickey Mouse. I decided to skip it when I ordered my EV6.

just commenting on the up-vs-down for track selection thing: it felt backwards to me at first when I got a Niro (does the same thing in that car), but I started seeing it like moving up and down the track list. Like, if you have the screen up to show the tracks, the next track that will play is under the currently playing track. Once I started thinking of it that way, it became much more natural to me after that.

One of the quibbles I have with the EV6 that you didn't mention here is that for whatever reason, the North American version of the car does not have proper amber turn signals on the rear, as the car does in other markets. Also, I already mentioned in a different comment, but I'll say it again here: at least for this 6'4" person, the EV6 is still comfortable. Definitely not as roomy as my Model S, but I took it for a test drive and it fit me very nicely. It probably will depend on body proportions; I have an average height torso and long legs, while other tall people have average length legs and a long torso. For those others, the EV6 might be a little tighter, especially the GT-Line with its sunroof that takes up some headroom.

Just ordered an EV6 Wind AWD instead of the GT-Line because I was worried about the headroom for the tall people in my family. We happened upon a GT-Line at our dealership and my son was able to sit in it. He has a longer torso, and while he fit, headroom felt a little too tight. He said he could just recline the seat a little bit which helped me rule out the GT-Line. As for leg room, he couldn't get over how much space his legs had. I'm 5'10" and have no issues with headroom.

Apparently there is an update coming for the Meridian sound, which sorts out the subwoofer issue. The subwoofer doesn't work below volume 40 or so. Maybe you could turn the output volume on the phone down, just have default EQ on the phone and then use the EQ on the car with the volume higher.

  • @Emadifications

I Can't seem to turn the volume on the phone down when connected through Android auto... it basically is only controllable by the car. As for the equalizer? I have the bass maxed out on the car and unless I mess with my phone equalizer every single time I start the car or even sometimes while playing music, it'll flatten out my eq settings. Sometimes even between songs. Funny part is, my Fender sound system in the Golf R is light years better, even with my phone flattening everything out.

Not having electric steering wheel adjustment is actually a safety feature. If you were to be involved in an accident that pinned you in the driver's seat and the electrical system had been damaged in the accident, emergency services would still be able to move the wheel to be able to free you. Just precisely how often do you need to change the position of the wheel anyway? My own steering wheel has not moved in 12 years since I drove the car away from the dealership.

_"how often do you need to change the position of the wheel anyway?"_ -- every time my spouse has been driving the car. And my spouse has to change the position every time I've been driving it. The emergency responder issue seems like a legitimate concern, but it also seems like a solvable problem. Having electronic controls doesn't preclude a manual override. And it would be much better, especially given that the car already stores mirror and seat settings for two drivers, for the steering wheel position to be electronically controlled and stored along with those other settings.

There are pros and cons for each. I've opted for the model Y. I saw my first EV6 last week. I happened to park next to it and I was shocked that the roof line was more than 6 inches lower than my Lexus RX450h. It seemed like it was almost like a sedan. But I think seeing them every 2 secs was a turn off. That may seem a little narcissistic but also, they will always be available when needed. The ev6 was new and unique and Kia has been good to me so I gave this a shot. I do think adding a tesla is in my future but don't think I can own just the Tesla. Luckily the ev market is taking off. Also, you're right about the roofline. It's barely taller than my Golf R ha ha! Thats why I consider it almost hatchback/ wagonish.

@@Emadifications someone from another video said it's in all trims but he said "I think it is". So i hit a bump on the road when looking into purchasing this vehicle. Of course the main reason I want this vehicle is to not pay the ridiculous 700 to 800 per month (9,600 annually) on gas like i am right now. Second reason was because i can basically charge the car for free since i have a large solar system at home that produces around 2600 kwh a month and of that amount we only use around 700 to 800 kwh each month. Even during these constant 110 degree plus days with the ac on all day. So anyways the bad news is that my estimated annual commute is around 45 to 50 thousand miles. Battery cells on a car usually last around 100k miles. Basically I would have to buy a new battery pack every 2 years which could be costly. Apparently it can cost up to 20k to replace a battery pack on a EV. In the end i will end up using all the money i saved on gas to purchase new battery packs every 2 or so years. Someone recommended I lease the vehicle instead but if i do that I will never own the vehicle.

Like i mentioned before it gets hot over here in Arizona. This must have a huge impact on the battery life that EV vehicles have over here. A dealership can quote you a particular life expectancy on a battery but these life expectancies are based on conditions that the vehicles are tested under and extreme heat is not one of them. Also keep in mind that my coworkers drive a lot less than i do and they still barely got a little over 100k miles out of their batteries. I basically triple what they commute so i would definitely go through batteries faster than they do.

I cleaned them, taped them off with precision, and then did 3 layers of high temp paint. Some use calipers paint, but I've been using engine paint since there are readily available colors everywhere. In full transparency, I kind of took a quick route and need to redo them. I'll use the same method. Thank you for the nice words. That video was a big learning for me. It depends on the EV, and is dependent on max speed since the torque of an electric motor is fairly predictable as a function of is rotation speed. So an EV with a lower top speed (like VW ID3/4) tends to fall of at lower speeds - about 50mph as the gearing is shorter. Something like a Tesla with a top speed over 150mph tends to fall off around 80 to 90mph. The EV6 top speed is rated at 161 mph which is very good so has long gearing so should tend to have a good performance for legal speeds (Germany excepted). For most people, most EV's will have good instant overtake performance at most speeds as the acceleration is instant, not autobox to figure out what is happening and change gears, or a manual gear change.

And one time, a headwind caused challenges and I got about 180 and had to slow down to ensure i could make it to a charger. Others will swear they have gotten 240 doing 70+ mph, but i haven't. If range is important and you're gonna do a lot of road trip, EVs can be a little challenging, so you want to do your research before buying or before a trip. Some states have great infrastructure but a lot don't. You could consider a rwd model which gets slightly better range. But you lose some of the fun power and awd. Otherwise, I believe the tesla network is supposed to open up to all cars, provided you have the right adapter. That could save a lot of hassle. Lastly, if range is a big concern and you plan on a lot of road trips, maybe a model 3 or Y long range? I think the ev6 is great bit the problem isn't just limited to the ev6. @@Emadifications you know, actually i have many others thoughts also :) I also curious about your wheels, i know you changes this, and actually i really have a questions 😃 Maybe it's would be hard to check, but how many kg have your old wheels (standard), and your new wheels ? 🤔 For example... of course i also had so many tests of my car 😂😂😂 And you know, i have many to say about this really 🤔 First of moment it's tire pressure, factory of KiA (manual), recommended pressure by 2,5 bar (for all wheels), it's doesn't matter which type you have "19" 255/50 🤔 or "20" 255/45... I have "20" (and actually not sure about correct tires type of "19" 🤔) But... Anyway they recommended same pressure (2,5 bar). I checked maximum possible pressure (on my tire sidewall) ... So, and manual book of car, they say (actually it's really true), pressure in cold weather and warm weather (also depends on driving style), possible growth up - min 0,4bar / max 0,6 bar So, having all these data, I calculated... Factory recommended pressure by 70 % of maximum possible pressure of tires 🤔 (Sorry for my English, but i trying explain correct what I mean)... So... I have a testing of car, i used i-pedal mode, and drive "simulating" on average urban driving mode (speed limited, not more 80 km/h), of course stops, accelerations, mixed mode... So, maximum what i can to get in standard tires pressure (2,5 bar) it's was 5,9 km/kw (i testing by 100km) (I'm sorry, i know you use millage in your country, but it's more easy for me to explain)... So, what i trying to say... I changed standard pressure by 80% of maximum (for my tires "20" 255/45 Continental maximum it's 51psi or 3,6 bar), so how i said i made by 80% of maximum possible pressure of tires and made 2,8 bar from standard (factory) 2,5 bar... Finally, what i get... 🤔 objectively, car began to react more sharply to turning the steering wheel, the driving dynamics improved (this is a personal feeling) in practice testing... I made same testing, looks like before, with "simulations" of urban traffic ( I used same way, road and also limited not more 80 km/h) And actually i was really surprised... 🤔 my spending stats have growth up, for last testing by 2,8 bar i get 7,4 km/kw 🤔 If we takes simple score... We can get 77,4 kw battery by 5,9 km/kw (around 456 km) And second test 77,4 by 7,4 km/kw (around 572km) 😲😲😲 It's really amazing, because from this test i win 116 km difference 🤔 (it's around 73 millage 🙄) P.s. for all this two tests, pressure of tires group up maximum to possible growing ( to 0,2 bar ) I really very impressed with the result 🤔🤔🤔 And also want to give you another information, when I used ECO + i-pedal... From 150 km/h speed, i dropped pedal accelerator (i used screen statistics in car, EV statistics energy), and by standard pressure (2,5bar), car showed me maximum recovery energy 135 kw, in same speed 150 km/h by 2,8 bar pressure, she showed 147 kw 🤔 P.s.s. all tests I listening music 🎶 and every time energy statistics display showed 0,3 kw for media losses... I followed all the statistics closely. so believe me everything was i checked i honest follow... Great Information: if you want to get maximum range, in city: drive (until 80km/h with stops and etc...) but Using i-pedal mode... If you want maximum range in highway, use Eco mode and 3 type of recovery energy... Why??? ... Because in i-pedal car use AWD and when you use recovery, car give back anergy from two engine, if you use Hi speed (highway), you don't use recovery energy often, so most of this energy takes front engine, he take more Kw but don't give back. I so much sorry who read all of this my long text, really sorry guys 😃 but, maybe i can give something new interesting information about this amazing car, if someone really will interesting about this, i will be glad 🤝😉 Sorry for my English guys, i really tried explaining maximum well 🤗
