6 Years Later... The i7-4790K Vs. i3-10100F Vs. Ryzen 3 3300X

When someone dropped off an i7-4790K with some ram and a HDD, I thought "let's couple this bargain with my dumpster picked Z87 board and see how it can perform", and coupling these 3 CPUs with a 5700 XT at 1080p, showed that the i3-10100F and Ryzen 3 3300X, although good, aren't in a different league to this old but gold CPU.

Bryan you should look into manually tuning the memory instead of overclocking the 3300x. Cheap ballistix sport lt 3200 have been shown to easily run 3600 with tight timings resulting in sub70 ns latency and an uplift of up to 25% without even OC the CPU.

The problem with the 4790k's is they still carry that "i7 tax" (in my market at least ). And they are actually MORE expensive than brand new Amd ,and Intel chips. And they are still selling at these prices. I mean I get it. Some people just don't want to buy into a brand new platform. Great video yes man!

No, that's just the retailers trying to get as much out of their unsold stuff. A retailer in my town is still selling an brand new FX 8350 for $250 and an HD 5870 for $350. Logitech G19 for $250 also. If you are talking about used yes, intel usually retains more value over time. An 2nd hand 1800X and a 2nd hand 7700K costs $200. The problem here is that 1800X used to be $500 and the 7700K was $300. I7 4790Ks still cost $170 in the 2nd hand market where I am at

Last summer after Ryzen came out, I bought a Core i5-4690k, Maximux VII Hero, and 24gb of RAM for $60. A few months ago I got an FX-8350 for $25 and it worked well. The deals are there but it helps if you live in a Big City, you check the 2nd hand sites frequently, and most of all is you have to act quickly. You're exaggerating. Any CPU demanding game will be bottle-necked by your slow CPU substantially, you just don't see it, and I know, because I had my RTX 3070 running on a 4790K temporarily, until I finished my 13700K build. Trust me, those 8 P-cores, and 8-ecores in combination with 5.3Ghz and a large 30MB cache, and the fact that you can use faster ram, faster PCIe ports, faster NVMEs exploded my frame rates of that same card in Red Dead Redemption 2 on ultra inside the main city. Don't even get me started about video rendering... it blew my mind.

Problem with the 4790K - finding one at an affordable price. I know of a store that still has them new, but they *insist* on selling it at the original price so that they "don't lose money on it", just like the extremely old PCMICA TV tuner card they also have in stock at original pricing (box looks it's been on the shelf in the sun for the last 15 years). And the second hand market is even worse. BTW, that motherboard if it's anything like my friends Z87-P D3 or my H97 HD3, it'll be kneecapping the CPU heavily - at stock with single channel DDR3 1866 my Z97 Sabertooth MKII ran my 4790K faster stock than on either of those Gigabyte boards with dual channel DDR3 1600 and the 4790K at 4.6GHz (can't go higher with the 1.2V cap). Even my Asus H87M-Pro was better - it could run the 4790K at 4.8GHz safely and didn't have subpar performance.

The 4790k's longevity makes sense when you look at the big picture: the 6700k is really only ~10% faster at the same clocks and the 7700k is just a 6700k that is capable of clocking higher. That means a 7700k running at 4.2ghz and a 4790k running at 4.6ghz will perform very similarly (not counting DDR4 benefits obviously). I only retired my 4790k last year because the 2700x was on sale for like $150 at my nearby Microcenter. Running a 4790K overclocked to 4.65GHz on an ASUS Maximus VII, with an R9 290X. Built this rig 5 years ago, and frankly I'm still looking for a reason to drop another wad of cash on a new rig. I know I can get more, but the fact is, this does what I want of it (WoW, D3, Doom, and more) at 1440p with great frame rates. Maybe 11th gen intel or 4000 series AMD.

I actually have a secondary PC with 4790K @4.8ghz 2400 cl10 mem and 1070 Ti. 1070 Ti is on a "cheap" custom loop I threw together from spare stuff and discounted stuff I managed to buy (as a test for my full loop that is now done as well for past few months, it was great training lol). The 4790K is on NH-U12S, liquid metal ofc (delided). That delid dropped 27C on average for me. Temps never reach above 80C in aida and 86C in prime 26.6 and thats with a decent cooler so these temps you shown are a bit weird but maybe your chip is just not as good as mine (got lucky lol). Cinebench r20 goes to 70C max with this cooler. Runs that 4.8ghz @1.35V (can do 4.9 1.39V but that also needs a better cooler to keep it cool during full usage tasks that are not gaming), then again its on MSI z97 gaming 5 mobo which is decent. Top PCIE slot is dead unfortunately tho so only got 3.0 8x for GPU. But again, its just my backup lol my main is basically super high-end. Gets 2.3k multi cinebench score (r20) and single is 450 (best result I had with 4.8ghz). Still great backup and when someone else from my family needs it to do stuff that could use some perf (light editing etc. from my siblings).

A part of what we're seeing with those old quad- and hexacore CPUs is what happened in the game development. 6 years ago not so many games could utilize all those threads while nowadays we can sometimes see performance bumps when jumping from 6 to 8 cores. If you bought a (for that time) high core count CPU that could get overclocked and had a decend IPC (aka older Intel CPUs with K-suffix) you made a great deal. Love that old vs new comparisons and love to tinker with older hardware myself so your channel is just heaven.

it's not worth it currently in all honesty. You can often get to 4.8ghz with a beefy cooler and delidding but the money that goes into that will only marginally improve performance beyond the standard 4.6ghz overclock. It would actually be more worth saving up a getting a 3700x or a 4700x when it comes out so you get superior IPC AND double the physical cores.

I have no idea when I'm going to upgrade my platform (CPU/Board/RAM). I WOULD love to, because I like to get new stuff and it's been just over 5 years now. But there's no point since nothing is really that much better anyway. I can run a 4.6Ghz OC 24/7 with no issues.

Considering I haven't upgraded my PC in five or so years now and it can still keep up with modern games, pretty good investment back in the day, I'd say.

Some caveats for the 4790K; if you want to run an m.2 SSD on this, you can only use it as a data-drive, because even with a PCI-E-card, you're not able to boot from it (everything else works though). Another thing is the problem between clock-speeds, timings and memory capacity- the faster your RAM, the LESS the 4790K/board can address. I wanted to run my 4790K with 32GB of fast memory and ran into strange issues that looked like memory corruption. After research I found out, that I could run 32GB OR a faster clock/timing. I went back to 16GB of fast memory and this works very well, even today. Just keep this in mind before you invest in a huge upgrade and getting stuck with RAM you cannot use.

Probably a sidestep in performance, newer titles run much smoother (higher lows) but the main purpose - its 5 years newer and i can drop in a cheap used 8 12 or 16 core 3xxx or 4xxx series in the future. Also did this with my 7700 - up to a 3600, again sidestep, made $$$ doing it, far better than being stuck with 4 cores max on a dead end socket.
