You can get hit by the shell without being first. The shell targets who is in first by the time of release and not by the time it arrives. You can be targeted get hit, passed by someone, be in 3rd place and still get hit by the blue shell.

​@@RealValkor that's not even remotely true. Theres no way you would see someone with a blue shell. All the blue shell targets who ever is in 1st place of the time it is released, you can lose 1st place by the time it reaches you.

fr just get an item you literally cannot get in first place, in first place.

You missed several: Bullet Bill, Star, Boo, outrunning it on 200cc, the ol' stop and reverse trick to let 2nd take the hit for you, and on not-deluxe MK8, there's also a really funny one: holding onto a blue shell yourself or having someone behind you pull another, as it'll despawn any that've been thrown due to nintendo spaghetti code.

That would be fine if not for the fact that most Mario Kart meta discussions are about online, where you can't do that unless you're specifically in a player-hosted session. You can't turn them off for random online matches.

In MKWii my strategy is always "Stay right behind first place and always have a speed item available." Stay behind em to protect against getting blued, and on the final stretch boost past them.

That's usually how I do it too

I remember playing with my siblings, and my sister was in second behind me, but then I saw a blue shell on the way, and I had a mushroom in my hand so I did the only logical thing a big brother would do. I slammed the brakes so she went in first, giving her a false sense of hope, but then the shell came and hit her instead. After she got hit, I used the mushroom and speed past, crossing the finish line and winning in first place. Yeah, she wasn't happy with that one.

Homie got shelled thrice in a row in that clip 💀

My GF was calling me crazy when I've started driving into my own banana b4 the blue hits. Now I can proof her it's not stupid at all. 😂

Fun fact: the mushroom trick doesn’t actually make you out-speed the blue shell. The reason it works is that you get very brief invincibility when you use a mushroom.

Number 7, on a downward slope, throw an item behind you using down arrow pad. It throws the item directly above you and if timed correctly will break the shell

For anyone struggling to dodge with a mushroom, ive found using the shroom when the shell’s underside is facing you works pretty consistently.

Fun fact: Throwing a Bob-omb backwards can actually collide with the blue shell without hitting you. Considering you can get bobombs in first it's super useful.

chances are you arent having any of those in first.

Falling off the track is almost always better than getting spiny shelled, lol. The cooldown is much faster.

I once dodged a blue shell on Yoshi Valley by making the blue shell go a different route, then it’d vanish and I’d be fine

That doesn't work. You're still the target by the blue shell. The blue shell targets 1st place upon release and if were targeted and fell behind, you're still going to get hit.

Jumping off the track is sometimes quicker, but sometimes Lakitu just takes so long to set you down that it isn't always worth it. Especially if you time it poorly and get hit anyway.

You can also use any of the invincibility items. Also, basically everything you can hit or get hit by does almost the same amount of damage. Getting hit by a blue shell isn't different from getting hit by a green shell. A blue shell is just harder to avoid.

But the blue shell also has a blast radius. The best technique is to slow down enough as when it hits you, you can take other racers with you.

I was in first place and I messed up and now you guys are ahead!" tactic when I saw the Blue Shell and they avoided... by using an item at the moment of the impact. "A horn/mushroom" NO, A COIN! They say that, by using ANY ITEMS at a precise time you can avoid the Blue Shell explosion I tested it and 70% if success rate tells me that it might be true

The hardest part of dodging a blue shell with a mushroom is that as a casual player the situation of you having a mushroom in first isn't going to happen often so it's extremely unlikely you'll ever even get to practice

You want to know what's crazy? the horn and mushroom methods are 100% intended. In the mobile version of Mario Kart, Mario Kart Rush, you get tips in a dedicated tips segment in the menu, and one of those tips Is "how to avoid a blue shell". there's even achievements for pulling off the dodges.

If you ever find yourself in first place and you see a blue shell in the minimap, if the second place happens to be nerby then slam the breaks and enjoy the show, never fails 👍

I feel like I remember hearing about championship Mario kart races that people actually utilized the visual input of the blue shell on its way and slowed down trying to get someone else in first by the time the blue shell gets close enough to pick its target

As someone who drifts like crazy, not staying in first is a horrible idea. Especially amongst my friend group where I spend a lot of time just drift boosting until I have such a huge lead that a blue shell is merely a mild inconvenience at best.

At one point there was an incredibly brief update where if you used the super horn on a blooper you could knock it back to the person who used it. I did it on accident once to a friend and haven’t been able to replicate it since.

I usually look at the mini map to see if a blue shell is coming. If I see one on the map I stop and reverse so the person in second passes me.

I always drive off the track when I'm about to get hit by a blue shell. You recover a lot quicker.

You can also dodge a blue shell by hitting the brakes and letting the person in second place take the hit. Good timing helps keep you away from the explosion.

You can destroy it with a perfect timing with a coin
