Thanks Neil. You are very relatable to me as a beginner. More helpful than these commenters whining about e-bikes and telling a former WC Downhill top 10-er what to ride.

Neil describes unweighting as going down then back to lift the front wheel. More generally, I think of using unweighting/weighting to make best use of rolls. I accomplish a quick unweight by letting the knees/hips absorb the crest the roll, followed by straightening the knees/hips to reweight the pedals as you drop down the other side of the roll. It's exactly the same technique one uses when skiing over moguls, one reason I like to compare mtbing to downhill skiing. It accomplishes the same thing in both activities -- retain control while cresting the bump while regaining traction immediately after you do so.

Riding drop offs with the manual technique as shown in the video is actually a wrong one isn't it? Because you lift the front wheel before it has left the edge. Thus you are relying just on the timing of the front wheel lift, which is not desirable.

you're right, pulling the front wheel up is wrong. BUT in the video he doesn't lift the front wheel. He pulls his bodyweight back over the back wheel. That way the front wheel wont dive down on the drop but stays horizontal

He just unwaited the front wheel just before it leaves the drop You can mani on a drop to do it slowly, but it is technically wrong.

@@PienimustaI think what he means is that pulling on a drop is more dangerous than pushing the bike forward. If your a pro and have good control it's all good, but a beginner should not try it that way

My advice would be to not pause riding any longer than you have to, but take it really easy and slowly get back to riding faster and on more challenging trails. Personally I almost never ride at top speed on mtb trails.

Get back on it at soon as you can. Go ride some nice easy green rated trails and just enjoy being on the bike. Don’t worry about progressing. Don’t try to do jumps. Don’t turn on Strava or anything like that so you’re not thinking about your timing. Turn off any speedos you may have. No stats, just ride until you’ve had your fun for the day and then quit and go home. Skip KZread vids of mtbing. Just ride like your 9 years old again. You’ll start getting back to where you were naturally if you don’t worry about it. Btw- personal experience- OTB compound fracture radius and ulna with plates and screws for life.

I think yeah, we are an accepting bunch but I do hear a lot of prejudice and gossiping when a beginner turns up with a super expensive bike or regarding e-bikes. Things could be worse but these are things that kind of sour the taste for others.

Not that I bullied anyone but I often feel a little pinch inside when I see a newbie who can barely balance who was creamed with some 8K 160+ travel enduro bike. Cuz everyone needs an enduro 😂 * It's the salesman & marketing department's fault, not that dude who got properly rooted ...

I slightly disagree on the notion "a decent set of trainers will work". Needing purpose built MTB shoes as a beginner I agree may not be necessary, but something with a "hard toe" needs to be a must. It's too easy to catch a toe on a rock or stump, especially if you're still trying to commit to muscle memory the idea of level pedals. Catching a stump or rock with set of old sketchers is going to end badly.

I destroyed my left toes wearing Nikes my first month riding. Literally broke one and the rest were swollen and bruised. I was amazed how good some cheap 2f0s felt. Mtb shoes are a necessity.

Personally my answer to them is: up yours, I have a dirt bike already, suck my showas...
