6 TRAINS IN 30 MINUTES!? Hot NS Trainspotting Action at Porter Junction, Indiana

During a trip to the Northeast side of the United States from Missouri, I had decided to make a few stops for railfanning. On the second day of vacation, I wanted to check out the famous junction in Porter, IN where the CSX Grand Rapids Sub, CSX Porter Branch, and the Amtrak Michigan Sub merge with the NS Chicago Line for a brief section of track.
Not yet into the Eastern Time Zone, I arrived at the Southside of the JCT just before noon. Within the first few minutes, at 11:56 AM, the first train arrived. 5 more trains passed in just over 30 minutes with the final NS train before heading to lunch was seen at 12:29 PM. The trains that were seen in the 30 minute period are listed: 39E, 10R, 60M, 270, 22H, and 35J. Amtrak’s 353 slowly coming off of it’s trackage finished the video. Symbols and timestamps are listed in the video on-screen as followed.
It’s hard to say how many trains were seen at that spot in the hour since I headed out for lunch, but I’d like to imagine that the number was pretty high. Six trains in 30 minutes may be a record for me as I cannot recall ever getting that lucky in places I am used to such as La Plata, Missouri. After finishing up at lunch about an hour later, I headed back to the Junction where I saw Amtrak’s 353 service from Pontiac, MI to Chicago, IL coming off of the Michigan Sub to continue it’s journey down the NS Chicago Line.
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy this video. Some cool foreign power is featured in this video along with a neat Amtrak Ballast Train. In my opinion, the lighting for videos was not bad either. (Recorded 1080P/60)

Nice video KTRF, awesome, six trains in 30 minutes is a good deal. You got some interesting freights and the new Amtrak locomotives and passenger coaches. I still prefer the F40ph unit's but these are ok. Well done 😊👍

Great Video and Happy Friday!!! I know I'm a little behind on this but I haven't caught one of those new UP paint jobs yet, nice snag! Are those bright yellow cars Amtrak ballast cars? If so what's the story on that, they use them for the tracks they own I'm guessing? Never have seen those before over here. Also man that UP engine behind the BNSF later in the video was looking warn, call me crazy but love seeing old locos like that, the miles they have traveled! Love the slow creep by with the Amtrak and the tall grass in the foreground, are those cars the new paint scheme for Amtrak? Great Video buddy and Happy Friday! -Ken

Hello, Ken! Thank you for the detailed comment and I am glad that you enjoyed my video. Happy Friday to you as well! 6 trains in 30 minutes was definitely a cool thing to encounter in new territory for fanning. Those new smaller nose shield UP paints are roaming the rails regularly now, some people have different opinions on them but I find the scheme quite spiffy. The NS ballast train with AMTK reporting marks that was seen was neat and I had never seen anything like it prior either. I am assuming they are for active ballast pouring work hence the solar panels and hydraulics. Either leased to railroads from Amtrak, or going to Amtrak tracks I am guessing. Cool either way! Regarding your statement regarding the older engines, I really find them awesome as well. Most of the older ones have horns and features unique from the newer locomotives, and yeah they have a good chunk of miles on them 😀. Me personally, I really like those B40-8W locomotives like that BNSF ine seen leading the train later in the video. I think the “lower” ditch lights and the model in general is fascinating. The Amtrak was a nice touch to end the video, and the fanning session; the livery is commonly seen on state owned trains while the long distance railcars have the same ine we know. Porter JCT really made a great impression on me. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment on my video, Ken! Hope you have a great weekend. -Kyler

WOW 6 trains in 30 minutes is def next level, that's awesome!!! Def love the Amtrak ballast cars, would love to find some of those in HO scale for my layout, really cool! Yep the older locos are def the ones I like in general, caught a Green BN unit a couple weeks ago, those are getting super rare so trying to catch everyone I can before they are all repainted! The mainline next to my house in BNSF but we do get a lot of UP's, I'll have to keep my eye out for the new paint scheme, I kinda like it, throw back to the super old one with the Union Pacific on the side. Have an awesome weekend Kyler!!! -Ken@@KTRFP
