Great video! My wife and I have officially been living off grid for three years now in the NC mountains. Solar power, rainwater collection, wet spring, gardens and composting toilets. A few additional tips if I may. Search for property that is unrestricted and yes a natural water source or two if possible. So many lessons learned going off grid and a lot of hard work but totally worth it.

Thank you JR. Being self sufficient has gotten a lot harder than it had been. There was a time when dirt poor people could live off the land, but now it takes quite a bit of funding to get there, especially if you plan to have any of the modern conveniences with which we have all become dependent.

Nobody ever just comes out and says it frankly, if we are in a real SHTF or grid down event you absolutely Must have chickens to survive, without eggs you will not survive in a longterm event.

One thing I wish I had done is check for all of the county regulations. In some locations, it is illegal to collect rainwater. stupid law. But in the process of checking, you will find a lot of those stupid laws. So make sure anything you may "want" to do in the future is legal on the property.

Depending upon your local climate, get a greenhouse/polytunnel or a greenhouse shed/workshop combination. This will extend your growing season especially in areas prone to frost.

Just hit the link and watched the security video again, left a comment over there. I wanted to say again, that really appreciate your content and put it to use. My wife and I are 70 percent to where we want to be prepared. IMO personal protection is most important, if not you're just a convenience store for someone else. Now I'm focusing on food and medicine. Would love to see more about hardening your home and passive early warning systems. Thank you and stay safe.🙏🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸

My next project is to build a smaller dual axle apparatus to set my jet sled on that'll hook to a bicycle to haul fish, game etc. Not sure if it'll work, but going to try it. 🤷😁

Greetings all. First, thank you JR for great informative videos. I enjoy viewing your content and reading the comments. My question is how to plan for the disposal of, or possibly repurposing empty metal drink cans or food tins in a situation when they start piling up and there would be no trash pick-up to depend upon?

Empty cans can be used for starting veggie plants in prior to transplanting. Just be sure to cut a couple of holes in the bottom sides for drainage. More than once in my travels, I have come across out buildings where cans were used for roof or outer wall shingles. The cans had had both top and bottoms removed and were then cut down the side seam. It appeared to me that the cans were then flattened by striking repeatedly with a ball peen hammer and to create a texture on the metal. They were then painted and nailed in place moving from bottom to top while continuously overlapping. The round bottoms and tops were used to cover open knot holes in the wood walls and also used for target practice. I've also seen the round ends used to make wind chimes to hang in the garden. Hope this gives you a couple of ideas.

Having some ace bandages, splints, or even a cervical collar is really handy as well. We’ve had to use all of these items after accident/injury while waiting to get medical care.

Hi Steve! I think the area around Nacogdoches would be a great choice. Lots of natural resources, and a fair distance away from anything too big. I’d probably want to get a little ways outside of town due to the college.

Great video. So I have so many questions. First let me set the stage. A family in a shtf situation at home. We have limited water. But we do have water every day. Not enough to cook. Clean. Drink. Etc etc. Dried beans and dried rice require a lot of water. Something like 2to1 ratio. I want a better way. Can you use a can of tomatoes and juice to boil like 2 cups of rice? Or beans? Is there canned foods that can be used to provide the water for the dried foods.

as i read this a thought came to mind. when opening a cans of corn, carrets, green beans, peas. they are packed in water (lot of sodium) but you could/can use that to boil with say rice/beans just pour it out when done (again a lot of sodium). just a thought, never tried it because as i said reading your comment i thought of it. (will try though). p.s use for dried food (sodium water).

Sure you can! Cooking rice in canned tomatoes will make it similar to Spanish rice. A little spices, and there you go. Also, in Girl Scouts 40 years ago, we made a hearty dish over the campfire called "Ring Tum Diddy." We browned some bacon in a pot, poured off the grease.... but saved it for later use.... then dumped cans of tomatoes, corn and maybe beans too, in the pot to heat. Then melt lots of cheese in it, and serve with campfire made toast. Totally delicious!! Just experiment with new things now so u r ready for later!😊

I know that some people stock chicken broth with their preps for this purpose, so they don't have to use drinkable water.

When I look up stuff to buy. ALL OUT OF STOCK I live in another country but still should be able to buy. THIS STINK I AM LOOKING FOR THINGS THAT YOU RECOMMEND???????

Hey JR, I made the farday cage out of the garbage can like you showed but I was able to find a cheap gasket on amazon. However, I'm still seeing a few tiny pinhole spots of light come through at where the lid goes on. Every time I take the lid off and put it back on, new ones show up. (Maybe 2 or 3). I'm thinking of buying another set of gasket and using them both inside and outside of the can so it's a double wall of protection. I still lose total cell phone and radio reception though when I put them in the can, so does that mean it's good enough? Thank you and great content!
