6 Things I Wish I Knew Earlier About... Attila Total War

Ойындар

Welcome to a video on 6 Things I wish I knew earlier about Attila Total War.
Everything from, order allies in Campaign with war-targets, to interesting strategies, to hidden Wonders.
Good for you if you knew all of these. But no, you did not discover all of them on your first day, and no, not everyone who has ever played a game also knew them. : )
Is there any interesting things that I missed?

Attila may be hard as hell, unbalanced, full of cheats for the AI and have some design flaws, it can make you angry most of the times because something doesn't work as planned, but for some weird reason it's still my favorite Total War game probably just because I just like to role play and think of the most crazy scenarios for the factions that even I lose or don't finish the campaign I know that I could change history in the most nonsensical ways.

The only reason people do not like Attila is because they think it should be a DLC pack for Rome || and it suffers from the same bugs except in this case they weren't all fixed. They should fix them because it's a goshdarn masterpiece.

I play as Visigoths and my empire is huge already, i think its all just about how to procede in every phase of the game: i followed the history behind the missions, went to Iberia and settled my horde there; until i did this i spent the entire early game turns on building the hord and then migrating: sacking and razing many places to fragilize the enemy. In my case i did not razed all places, for i would leave me no barrier against the huns while i stablished my empire in Spain. But the horde factions can do pretty much everything if you have pace and rythm: first grwoth, then migrate and destryo, then conquer and settle in: after that, EXPANSION, DOMINATE THE WOLRD; piece by piece, one campaing and region at once. By the bits you can reconstruct the Wersten Empire in your image, as im doing now.

  • @theodisius1

Thanks for this. The point about rapid firing archers on barricades was new to me, with the interaction with large shot being very interesting. Generally, I keep my archers back as the besiegers usually have missile superiority (I'd rather they fired at my spears with 100% block) but it is good to know. I am quite sure I get your recommendation to raze and rebuild a settlement that would have food issues, like in the Sahara. If it is just food, why not demolish any food consuming buildings you inherit? For example, I often lower the level of the core settlement buildings I occupy, as that helps reduce food consumption without having a big negative effect. Demolishing buildings also gives you cash. Razing and colonising costs gold and men, and takes an age to "regrow" the number of slots in the settlement. The main case where I might raze is where I can't cope with the public order problems, not the food. For example, if it is a non-capital settlement in a province and you can't control the capital (e.g. your ally or vassal has it). Typically, I find those more trouble than they are worth, so I am very tempted to raze them. For role play reasons, I usually resist though (I mainly play Romans and so leveling Roman settlements doesn't feel right). Ideally, there would be an option to give away settlements. I try to use the war goal feature you mentioned to induce allies to take such settlements if I don't want the hassle of controlling. But it is slow: allies often don't respond, take time to get there and frequently sack rather than occupy. The thing I wish I knew about Attila earlier, I just (re)discovered yesterday after 2000+ hours playing Attila: alt + right click targeting artillery. It seems to massively increase accuracy against stationary targets. For a long time I struggled to get bastion onagers to hit anything in a siege defence. Yesterday, I tried alt-targeting: first three shots, demolished three siege large onagers. As a consequence, the besieging artillery never breached the walls! I vaguely knew about the feature (apparently, it is in most TW games after Medieval 2) but I did not realise how big the benefits could be.

I recently got addicted to Attila Total War. I absolutely hated it when it came out but about a week ago I began reading about the collapse of the western half of the Roman Empire and wanted to play a strategy game in that period. Attila is the only one I have so it had to be that one. Anyway I'm playing a game as the Western Roman Empire on hard campaign / medium battles and have loved every second of it, frustrating as it was sometimes. The start was rough as hell - I tried to hold Britain but got gang banged by the Picts, Ebdanians and Caledonians. I had one army of 10 units, they each had a full army. I withdrew the army there and sent it to help stabilize the situation in Gaul, which they did, but only after losing the northern half of Gaul also. Iberia had chronic public order issues so I had to keep an army there to put down rebellions, but after spending a hell of a lot of treasure there I've managed to turn it into an economic powerhouse and peaceful region of my empire. It's the only part of the empire that hasn't been invaded. I got lucky in Africa - the two tribes there were peaceful and traded with me. When they went to war with one another I was able to seize the opportunity to puppet one of them and annex the other. Dalmatia, Pannonia and Raetia were all lost due to relentless barbarian invasion but Stilicho was able to hold the mountain passes and keep northern Italy safe (except for the Iazyges tribe who sneaked through and sacked Aquileia, but they were ambushed when they tried to leave Italy and totally wiped out. It's now 407 AD and after many battles and much frustration I have re-conquered all of my initial territories in Gaul, am about to invade Britain again with two armies, have re-taken Raetia and am about to invade Dalmatia and see what can be done there. The Eastern Empire isn't faring too badly either. They've held Constantinople and the eastern half of Greece, they've held Anatolia and the Holy Land, though they've lost Egypt and Cyreneaica. Soon I ought to be able to take those provinces for the western empire, unless the eastern empire go back in first. All in all, probably the most fun I've had in a Total War game since Medieval 2. I don't think I've concentrated so intensely on a single campaign since Rome: Total War (the first one).

@@killinspecialist1965 I played with Radious mod but it made the game ridiculously easy. As WRE I had 22,000 income per turn on the first turn, and garrisons were beefed up so much that I literally didn't lose a single city anywhere, not even in Britain. Then I tried a mod that increases garrisons by just 50% to make the game less frustrating, but that too made the game way too easy. Now all I have is a minor mod that lets your sanitation building increase fertility a little bit so that not all of your provinces are barren by the end of the game, which is ridiculous and unrealistic. You can't make all of your province rich fertility with it, it just allows your provinces to not go totally barren by the end of the game. I also have a minor mod that changes the way some units work in battle. It makes cavalry charges seem more realistic and makes battles last a little bit longer with more morale for units. I prefer slightly longer battles where entire armies don't run away after 5 seconds just because they took 10% casualties from a missile volley.

@@killinspecialist1965 Wanna list some of the ones that you consider to be essential? I only have those two but I'd use more if I saw something I'd definitely enjoy. I don't want anything that makes the game easier though - what I love most about this game is the challenge of playing as either the western or eastern Roman Empire. It's unusual for strategy games to put you in such a dismal situation where you have to work like hell to get out of it. Dunno if you played it but the old Barbarian Invasion expansion for Rome: Total War was similar to this - you'd begin the game in 370-ish AD and your empire was bankrupt as hell and half your cities were on the verge of rebellion. There's just something great about turning around a dying empire.
