I once got called for jury duty, and the announcement and roll call lady told the story of a recently minted US citizen who had been called to serve a few weeks earlier. When she called out his name, he opened the door of the quiet room, with a big smile on his face, and said loudly, "I'm here, and I'm ready to serve!" I'm so thrilled that you're now an American. Congratulations on getting your citizenship man! My father is a Mexican immigrant and became a citizen in 1996. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen to this day. 100 people in a giant courtroom in downtown Chicago from different backgrounds. At the end they all did the pledge of allegiance and the judge hit them with "Congratulations you are all citizens of The United States of America!" The vibes in that room were unreal

I have a friend named Maria who comes from El Salvador. She once told me that her only dream since being a child was to move to America and become an American. Even if you get called for Jury Duty, you may not end up getting called into the Jury Selection process and even then, if you do, you may not get selected for the Jury. I'm sure there's some procedural differences from circuit to circuit and district to district but for me, I sat in a room for several hours waiting to find out if I would even need to enter the courtroom, then I was called, walked in, sat down and was immediately dismissed for reasons I'll never know. Very weird experience. xD

LOL, I had an odd experience. I was in a room of roughly 600 potential jurors. Name after name was called, and group after group were led away by a bailiff. The crowd dwindled down to where there were only 5 of us left. How lucky we thought, not enough of us left to make a jury. Then we were led to a very small room, just in case one of the courts needed more juror candidates. We had to sit there until they all had picked their juries. That took over 3 hours. This in the days before cell phones, no TV in the room. The one time I was a juror (custody battle) the lawyers came to an agreement right after we were seated in the jury box. That was cool.

The thing about being called for Jury Duty and then not being selected is, it still counts as you serving your legal duty until the next time your turn comes around. Even if you don't even get to the point of being physically called in to attend the selection process, it'll still count. I've gone through it a few times and only one time have I actually had to leave my house for it.

It is not odd if you consider the US to be a great nation or at the least, one you love. I love hearing about people gaining US citizenship for two reasons. First and foremost it means that for whatever reason, they wanted to and became a citizen of my country... They actively choose the place I enjoy living in and care deeply for. Secondly gaining citizenship just about anywhere is not a process to take lightly and gaining that citizenship shows the person truly did want it. The succeeded at their goal, one that takes years in the US and thus I commend them. caveat: My father and both grandfathers served, but I am just ye olde citizen.

@Menti Capti I always thought it was widely known that service is a path to citizenship. So out of curiosity I ask; Is there a specific group you are referring to? Or is this simply your own experience? Or am I missing something here?

@Menti Capti I did not serve, but due to my father serving in the army during Vietnam I became interested in the military in general and specifically military history at a very early age. Even before I got out of elementary school I was already watching things like Vietnam: The Ten Thousand Day War (which is 13 hours long). So perhaps I have just taken this for granted. I really think service is a great way to go about gaining citizenship. It shows commitment in a way that other paths do not show as readily. Though I commend all who gain citizenship equally. I truly love seeing or hearing about it.

I have been summoned for jury duty many times and actually served on juries four times. The last time was particularly touching because during jury selection we had a young man explain that he had just received his U.S. citizenship and when he got his jury summons shortly afterwards, he couldn't believe it. He was from a country that had very ugly corruption issues and he had always thought the stories of Joe Average U.S. citizens participating in the legal system were clearly untrue. The poor man was in tears, he was so happy. It gave me a very different opinion of my civic duties as a citizen.

So I wrote back that I'd just flown the coop and they could find someone else. But Texas has twice summoned me. The first time I spent 4 hours only to find out they wouldn't need me. I've been notified for jury duty four times, called twice, and sat once; meanging I've only served on one jury but was required to appear for service twice. The most recent being this past fall. Serving on a jury is something everyone should do at least once in my opinion. Sure serving can be an inconvenience but is very rewarding. I too learned more about our judicial system by way of participating than I would have any other way.

How is it rewarding? I've been called four times and never served, and never cared. If I'd been picked I would have done what I had to and "tried" to do it well, but it would have been with MUCH resentment towards the entire US. I'm a introvert and just don't want to work with people like that. I have two modes in a situation like that. The first is "it's not important enough for me to have a discussion/ conflict with anyone about so do what you want and I'll follow", the second one is "this is important to me, I'll never change my opinion, and I'm willing to get physical over the issue". Some people just don't need to be on a jury. I'm one of them. I wouldn't want myself on a jury FOR myself, and I wouldn't want another person similar to me on a jury that held my freedom/life in balance. They need to do private jury interviews because most introverts that genuinely don't need to be there ain't gonna say jack shit about why the legitimately shouldn't be there in public.

There are three ways by which the average American citizien participates in goverrnment: 1) Pay taxes, 2) Vote, 3) Jury Duty. Of the three, being a juror is the most powerful Paying taxes is required. Voting makes your vote just one of millions. As a juror, you can actualy strike down a law that you consider "unlawful". It's call "Jury Nullification". Want to get out of jury duty, announce that you support Jury Nullification. Defense lawyers will love you; prosecutors will hate you and immediately strike you.

Actually the test is no longer that hard. When you're scheduled, they give you 100 questions and answers to memorize. 10 of those will be selected for your test and you only need to answer six correctly. These questions tend to be pretty basic, like name the United States, president or name two of your state senators. I honestly think Lawrence would have had an easy time if he hadn't panicked.

And it's been like... ten years and I haven't been summoned since. It's absolutely insane to me that you have to go to a voting machine to vote. Oregon votes entirely by mail. Our elections cost a quarter as much (actually 21-22% as much) and have a much higher voter turnout than elections where you have to go to a polling place on election day and cast a ballot. I hope you vote, and I hope you never tell us who or what you vote for.

You might find the jury duty thing particularly interesting as someone who was raised in another country. All judges do this bit differently, but depending on where you live and who is running the courtroom, you might get a fun civics lesson full of things most citizens don't pay attention to after high school, talking about how important it is, and the history of the US, and it's something the Founding Fathers believed and fought for. I do legal transcription for a living at the moment. I've heard quite a few of these speeches from different judges in different states. Mostly it seems to be to get the jurors interested and feeling patriotic about donating their time to doing an important civic duty. Personally, I've always wished to be called for duty, but it's never happened.

I have served on juries 3 times - once in federal court and twice in Virginia courts. (Virginia tried to get me a third time but I was the sole care giver for my elderly mother in another state and I was exempted). I feel very strongly that everyone should serve on jury duty when they are called. But I warn you - if you take your responsibility very seriously (as I did - each time) you can find yourself aging rapidly during the process. I constantly wanted to interrupt the proceedings with my own questions and my overly-suspicious brain "assumed" that my reasonable questions were not being asked because the attorney's didn't want us to know the answers! Also I found it nearly impossible to base my decision strictly on testimony given in court and not allow my own personal experience to influence me. I don't know how anyone is able to do that! I learned that one of the best ways they have of making sure of this is by allowing anyone over 70 (in other words - the people with all the experience!) to automatically be excused from jury duty. By the time I reached it I felt it was one of the best things about getting old!

Welcome aboard! Jury duty is a lot like being at traffic school- amazingly boring. Once you are picked for a jury, it can get interesting. I was on a jury in a murder case once. That was where I got to see, and speak to, a parent who was helping his son conceal the murder he had committed. After the trial is over, the prosecutor and defense attorney requested to talk to the jurors. The judge told us we don't have to speak to them if we don't want to but of course I said "Sure, I'll talk to them". Why not? The lawyers just wanted to know what they did right and where they failed to convince us of their arguments. The guy's father just wanted to ask me "Do you think my son did it?" and I was happy to tell him "Yes, and I KNOW you helped him". He looked at me like maybe he was a bit surprised and said "That's all I want to know". His assistance was in picking up his son right after the murder and bringing him a fresh set of clothes and dumping clothes the son wearing that day.
