Steven Feifke, is an American pianist, composer, and orchestrator. An avid and lifelong academic, Feifke’s writing spans many genres and mediums. In 2014, he was commissioned by the 23Arts Initiative to write an arrangement of George Gershwin’s 1924 “Rhapsody In Blue” for jazz big band and concert pianist soloist (Tanya Gabrielian). His big band music has recently been featured by the Malmo Band in Switzerland, and soon his orchestral music will be debuted in August 2019 Next Generation festival in Florence, Italy. Feifke has also written original works for television and film media, and his music can be heard on the hit Netflix TV show “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” produced by comedian Jerry Seinfeld.
Feifke has been featured as a pianist on a number of records including “Falling Forward” by Ulysses Owens Jr, “Onward” by Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, and “First Things First” by Andrew Gould. His compositions and arrangements are regularly performed by a number of ensembles around the United States, and his original works will soon be heard on his large-ensemble follow up to his first solo album, “Peace In Time” (2015). For all the latest updates and more, join the mailing list here.
Feifke leads several of his own projects of various sizes: a jazz orchestra, a septet, a trio, and a five piece ensemble called “The Songs of Winter Band.” He also co-leads an art music project with vocalist Martina DaSilva, called “With Strings.” Feifke has been named a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition (2011 and 2018), and has performed internationally since 2011. He lives in New York City where he writes out of his home studio, and when he is not touring he can frequently be heard performing at local venues like Smalls Jazz Club, The Django, Mezzrow, the Blue Note, and Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
In 2018, Feifke was the recipient of the Arts Mid-Hudson “Pro’s Meet Pupil’s” grant for his curriculum designed to teach students jazz history through performance. This grant is a part of an ongoing collaboration with The Catskills Jazz Factory. In addition to his grant work, Feifke has also been solo artist in residence at Northern Illionois University, and given masterclasses at Williams College in Western MA, and the Yale Undergraduate Jazz Collective in New Haven, CT.
Feifke holds a BM in Jazz Studies and a minor in Economics from New York University (2013) and a MM in Jazz Composition from Manhattan School of Music in Jazz Composition (2018). During his time in school, Feifke studied with and learned from two luminaries of composition and orchestration: Gil Goldstein and Jim McNeely.
Chad LB is an international recording artist who has toured globally as a bandleader, and with superstars ranging from Chris Botti to Taylor Swift. He has been a featured soloist with premiere ensembles like the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, and was formerly a member of the multi GRAMMY winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Despite his demanding tour schedule, Chad is on faculty as a visiting artist at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for their new Roots, Jazz and American Music degree program.

I think the most important thing writing for big band i have learned doing it a fair bit now is, the most important thing is how the part looks. Is it clean, does the grouping of bars make sense, are the rhythms clear. Are there clear dynamics, consistent use of Sharps or flats. Those are the things that matter a ton that are not apart of the creative proccess. It's more of a craft thing really.

MrHestichs totally! This video and package is about how to actually write/arrange music for 13 horns and rhythm section, not about “copyist” techniques, though Steven does touch on that lightly as well in the package :)

@@ChadLefkowitzBrown Wonderful. I can recommend making videos about the coypist side too. Because there is virtually no information about that. You would have a monopoly for sure on that ;) For my case, I just wrote for the town big band where I play and encouraged all kinds of feedback.

Thanks! I'm a rock guitarist but I've recently grown to really like the 'sound' of brass in big band/swing/blues/pop music and want to maybe incorporate some elements into my tracks, but I'm completely clueless about arrangement (or even instrument sections). Very enlightening video (despite the fact that I'm not in the target audience of savvy music theorists!).

No musical training. I write gospel songs [sing words, work out basic chords and find the key, can write a basic melody line]. As a volunteer dj on a community radio I chose to play the jazz of a hundred years ago (approx) and wondered if I could fit my songs to the big band style so am trying to understand what makes it and get the "feel" of it. Unfortunately can't afford the Au$42 to by your material. Thanks. I will come back again and listen, something might start "sounding in my head" and give me a breakthrough.

What's the ladies name playing Bari? When I was in HS we had an associate Jazz band director named Diane DeRosa, she was a great player, she too played Bari. Richie DeRosa is her brother, he played with Jerry Mulligan.

When I write for sax solis, I use block voicing. It’s easy and I get a good result. I wanna try writing for big band but I always hit that cursed writers block. Combine that with my lack of knowledge of jazz theory and you get a person who has a hard time writes simple sax solis
