6 reasons you should NOT move to Japan, Korea, China (East Asia Life)

HIGHLY REQUESTED VIDEO is finally OUT! Why I would NOT move back to East Asia (Japan, South Korea, China). I listed out 6 common reasons, that might not be uncommon to non-Asians. So if you plant to move to Japan, China, or South Korea, make sure you are aware of those issues!
I have been observing way too many people fantasizing about Japanese, Korean, Chinese culture through the pop-culture such as kpop (BTS; Twice; Blackpink; etc.), anime, manga, douyin, webtoon, 小红书 - and honestly, most will end up chasing this romantic dream that exists only in their own imagination of countless hours consuming these entertainment media. I hope some don't end up in self-fetishization of east-asia (koreaboos & weebs). But that's a topic for another video!
This video was not meant to hate on any country, but to raise awareness about the East Asian culture and lifestyle people will face when living in this society (local society...). The pressure, competition, (unrealistic) Asian beauty standards, plastic surgery, and the dark side of Japan, China, South Korea no one talks about. If you are European, you might be treated differently (if not even worse as most will dare to be genuinely honest with you haha).
I'd love to hear what you think!
Comment:
(1) Under what circumstances would you move to East Asia (which country?)
(2) Why you would like / dislike Japan, China, or South Korea?

There are a lot of toxicity and issues in East Asia that are hard to swallow for many. Only the bright and positive side are shown in media while the negative parts are rarely talked about. Thank you very much Kyurin for this video~ Currently, I am a 20 yo student in a business school and I plan to work firstly in Europe and then go to East Asia for work. I have been thinking about this recently. However, you showed the most important part of the East Asian culture. (I can totally relate since I have Chinese origins), especially the mental health topic, nobody wants to know about your condition, and that needs to be changed. Besides, work career represents so much pressure. Your video is indeed very very interesting and I respect your opinions ! personally, I think I will nevertheless plan to get a job in East Asia. I may sound completely crazy for a lot of people, but I assume that I am ready to bear the East Asian system. As I said before, your video is super interesting and full of personal experiences (those make the video so relevant) Love your content and I will always support you in this multilingual journey !~

One reason that I would not move to east asia (especially Japan/China) is how they try to "erase" their history, how they're all about saving face, "hush" culture (I'm not sure if that's the correct terminology). But textbooks acknowledging important dark sides of a country's history is so important to not repeat those mistakes, in my opinion. In comparison to how a lot of Germany acknowledges their dark history (preserving concentration camps, cemeteries), the differences are really intense and mind-boggling for me.

  • @KyurinDiary

About the history, on my record, China is not known to twist history - Japanese textbooks have proven that they “erased” their war crimes and other “sins”. I am not aware of China doing so. I would love to hear your experience with that. But it is true that East Asians are quickly forgetting (and forgiving) which can be bad or good.

That may be rooted in prejudice. What you said is somewhat old fashioned(son preference). I'm Korean, so I don't know much about Japanese and Chinese culture. @kat s 1. Korea is a highly competitive society. The amount of learning required of teens is very high. Their academic stress causes many suicides so their parents are very concerned about the mental health of their children. Every school in Korea must have a counselor to take care of the students' psychology. 2. Korea is a depopulated country. The fertility rate is the lowest in the world. By 2050, half of the current Korean will disappear. The average age of first marriage in Korea in 2019 is 32. In 2021, 35% of all households in Korea are single-person households. 3. The Korean Family Register Act was amended in 2008. The children could follow their mother's surname even if the couples are not divorced. The idea of having a son to carry on the family has become an anachronism. 4. Korea is a mono-ethnic country. Most Koreans are not used to seeing people of other races in real life. They feel uncomfortable to approach foreigners in the first place. But once they get used to you, they will become talkative and want to get to know you. While I was in Europe, I felt that the inclinations of Italian male in 40-50s and Koreans were very similar. Of course, there are also racists who have far-right tendencies in Korea. 5. Plastic surgery? In Korea, there are many young women who have double eyelid surgery or orthodontic treatment but I have never seen a woman in real life undergoing surgery to change the shape of her face. I have heard through the media that some actors and singers have had such an operation. Some women would talk as a joke 'I will become that pretty if I have plastic surgery', but it is rare to find a woman who actually did that. from a Korean man in his mid 40s who live in Korea for at least 30 years.

the mental health one really is a big no no. as someone suffering from serious mental health problems since being a kid, I know first hand the way you get treated by peers and even grown ups can be insanely cruel here in Europe. so I can't even begin to imagine how bad it must be in EA then. 😔 nah thanks!

That's funny. I found the opposite for reason 1. Had friends in Korea who were more considerate or wanting to hear what I was going through where as none of my friends in US normally would. I will say there's a known stigma about how women are treated especially in the corporate world there and some messed up pressure from even parents to their kids about getting plastic surgery because of how normalized it has become

But they have no choice but to move out to have a better living conditions or a government/political related.

I'm from south asia and i was planning to fly to another country. But now i see.. i'll tell you about how our country goes. In here not even a kid mention abt your beauty. I mean we praised others but we never tell negative things. We don't usually put makeup or anything. Some put for parties and others don't and nobody cares anyway. We don't even shave our body like hands or legs, and Most of people don't shape their eyebrows. (I'm 21 and i still have my virgin eyebrows.hehe. i literally don't care abt beauty anyway) it's more like we don't care about artificial beauty. Boys also prefer girls w/o makeup. But nowadays this pop culture is spreading and so many teenagers tend to do these things and it's really sad to see that. Cause what will happen if things turned out like this. Another thing actually we can talk everything with our family or friends. I don't think anyone will just laugh if we say we have depression or anything. We are really loyal and trustful for anyone. (Not everyone tho) And the job sheesh i really thought it'll be good on another country with a good salary. But i think i should care about my mental more than that. I'm really afraid of getting hate and that's why i prefered to go for ea country like japan or else. But it seems like that i should stay here. I don't think i can endure that. Thank you sooo much for this video. This is really really good

Mental health doesn't exist in East Asia. It's a taboo even if we have issues we keep it inside and talk crap out in the surface. Everybody is friends with you only on the surface. We always compete with each other's. It's unhealthy but tbh it shapes me to be more tougher. If you want to go to east Asia I advice you don't do that for anime, kpop, Chinese drama. Don't. You go there either for money or competing. Okay it's better to travel. When I lived in Australia for a while. Wow the jobs and work time is so great. Not saying that you guys have I easy but it's way better life compare to other companies. Life there is so chill.sometimes I hate how you guys potray In the media because it's not what it looks like. In my family too my family has double standards it's not bad compare to sexism in East Asia. So my mom wants me to have a family , kids, get married, have a career..

I agree with your perspective! It’s honestly this superficial friendship with an inner mind of competition. I despise such attitude so much. They would congratulate you without being sincere about their own feelings and pray for your downfall silently. And if they see a benefit in a mutual situation, they will drop you immediately. How do people enjoy “fulfillment” in life when they have to step over others? It’s disturbing and yes it can strengthen you, but also traumatize one’s trust in people.

(long text incoming....... ) those reasons are might happening in some countries on europe too . i will start with my country (greece) 1. when it comes to the mental health it is not a stigma but it is overlooked . parents dont consider it important and when the child is telling the parents about mental health only the mother will understand but when it comes to the father it is a big NO . even if you say about therapy and psychologist to him he will answer that the psychologist will not solve anything . the mother will say the same as the father . 2. about sexism it exists but very little . i cant say it doesnt exist. 3) a) plastic surgery exists . i cant say it doesnt happen cuz it is happening . it is just not so common but it doesnt mean it doesnt exist here . b) we dont have beauty standards here 4) support system ? alr what can i say about this ??? it depends on the person you are gonna find . 5) we have good work life balance . but i cant exclude you will encounter the overtime and not get paid at all . guess what ?! you cant speak about how you feel at all when you are working . or you do the work or you get fired . hierarchy exists in the job . you must do what your manager or boss is saying even if they are the most dumb people in the world. about societal hierarchy : we learn that we must respect the elders and the family but in the society that doesnt happen , the hierarchy is not common. 6) competition in job ? yes it exists . competition in school ? no it doesnt exist . it depends on yourself and some parents dont even push so hard as some asian parents . 20:45 about this phrase : it doesnt exist. i will explain it better . we are not a country that works like : society > individual and this phrase doesnt applied here . the society will not care about you . 7) i will say it simple . many young people go to europe to find work . a very very few go to asia . and others are staying in the country . about me : if i want to find work in asia i wanna go to China , Japan or South Korea . If i want to find work in West Europe i wanna go to Germany, Switzerland , Austria or The Netherlands. I believe i will overcome the difficulties and i am rdy for it mentally

@@honeybutterbutterfly7133 you don't need to relate to always South East Asia. I feel you have inferiority complex more?. South East Asia compare to East Asia is way more chill even in work culture. Sure there is sexism but it's everywhere for girls. In South East Asia you guys are less formal, more chill culture and I'm terms of education more diverse and not focused in STEM. I'm Chinese who lives in Indonesia. There work culture compare to East Asia is sooo East and chill. Even the way they talk and daily life and education is way easier compare to the East. Unlike the East they don't have tough entrance exams like GaoKao, Suneung and more. Unless your talking about Singapore that's different majority of Singaporean are 89% Chinese they're more international and good at english yes. But they still follow our Chinese values and value STEM more
