Hi everyone, specially Mayuko! I am a Software Engineering Student from Spain, and this video made me being more motivated to keep studying SE. I've thought that I should change my career 2 times because didn't felt motivated enough, I've failed a lot of subjects at College and many many many times I said to me "This is not for you man, give up"... Now I'm finishing my Software Engineering studies, and watching this video I'm proud of being a SE student, and soon, I'll start my internship as Software Engineer and then I will be a Software Engineer, can't wait for it. I don't know why this video appeared on my YT main page, but I saw the title and I thought "Wow, it's about SE, and it seems to be a cool video", I was totally right. So, I encore people to study software engineering, it's the best decission you can take. Thanks Mayuko!
Once I started codding, I really started valuing my time. Because before I just wasted all my time. And now I'm building a life for myself. Even though I don't have as much free time, as before...

Next month I will start my Computer Science student life and I can relate to each and every reason you presented. The one that I like most is the endless possibilities of doing apps (or 2.You can do anything), I like that in any second you can start doing a totally different thing with a little extra research. I really like your videos. :)
Hi, I want to be a software engineer too, I fell in love with programming when I once saw my uncle working on a software with his laptop in a Macdonald’s. I knew he had a Company that does Internet and Soft- Hardware development but I never thought anything about it. When I saw him writing code and explaining it to me, I didn’t tell him but I fell in love with programming ever since, I read books about it, try to develop on my own and I love to hear people talk about it. I’d love if you could answer me some questions, What are programmers expected to know about programming? Do they need to know every command there is in their IDE? What if you forget how something works? Do you work for clients or for your company exclusively?
@hellomayuko

Hello there! Thank you for sharing your story, that's inspiring! Here are my answers: What are programmers expected to know about programming? It depends from job to job (and company to company), but having a solid understanding of Software Engineering fundamentals (i.e. data structures) is common to all areas of software engineering at all levels. As you get more senior, having mastery in that technical area becomes more important! Do they need to know every command there is in their IDE? Nope! As long as you know (or learn) the important commands to do your work that's totally fine. There are some SE's I know who literally only use keyboard shortcuts and others who don't know any. What if you forget how something works? Thankfully the internet is a great resource! I google things all the time! For code I wrote in the past, I write it and look at my commit history to try to refresh my memory. Do you work for clients or for your company exclusively? There are several different types of ways to "work" as a Software Engineer, but currently I work for my company full-time!

Hi Melissa! That’s so awesome! I’d say Javascript would be a great next step - it’s being used for both frontend as well as server-side development nowadays and is extremely powerful! One of the most common frontend Javascript libraries used is React.js which is now the industry standard for creating web applications nowadays! Facebook creates React.js and they’ve got a nifty tutorial to get started using it! facebook.github.io/react/tutorial/tutorial.html PHP has largely been replaced with other server-side technologies like python, ruby, and Javascript. Server-side technologies are used to write out build business logic (i.e. for talking to a database or error-checking values), and python is also a very popular language that companies often choose to write their backend code. Here are some python tutorials that my friends recommend! www.codecademy.com/learn/python kzread.info/dash/bejne/pn-IvNF7YrnQpc4.html&list=PLC8825D0450647509&index=1 Thanks for the question, and keep rockin’ on 🤘

Hey Mayuko, I want to change career and get into programming. I can't and actually don't want to go to college again to get started. My plan is to know Java to write plugins and apps and get Progressive Webapps up and running. How do I find out if I have enough knowledge/skill to apply for a job? And is Silicon Valley a better place to start or to end up?
@shangyilim

you need to build your portfolio to apply for a job. Start writing projects in java and progressive web apps, upload them to github. that way you stand a better chance in finding a job.
@stephenkamenar

College is bad for programming. it's such an archaic way to learn, and almost no programming companies care about a college degree. Getting into programming is very simple. Just do it. Literally. What you need to get hired is a small portfolio of some stuff you've done. So just think about something you want to make, and use youtube tutorials to make it. You'll learn how to code and get your portfolio to get hired.
@hellomayuko
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jane! That is a solid plan you've got there, that's way more than I had planned when I first started 👌 I would say that the best way to know whether you have enough knowledge for a job is to apply for a job! I know it can be scary, but you don't have too much to lose to apply to a bunch of opportunities and see what happens. You can ask for feedback from recruiters so that you can continue to learn and add to your skillset too 😊 Silicon Valley is both a great place to start and end up as a Software Engineer. However while Silicon Valley is famous for being a huge tech hub, it's not the only place where you can be successful.

Found your video in my recommended and I couldn't be happier!!
I want to get into it, but two things make me hesitate. One the field is vast and the idea of learning it is intimidating, and I don't know where I should begin. Two, I'm 34 years old, and I wonder if learning code is like learning piano, you have to either be a genius or start learning it at a young age in order to do it well. I'm happy for any tips or advice.

It's never too late, also it's broad but it's not like you have to know everything of everything, usually in undergrad school you get a grasp of a lot of fields that you can go into, making courses doesn't hurt also, then after you graduate you can expertise in something you choose.

Startups want your labor for free or as close to it as possible, which is y the industry is flooded with young ppl, you can be a sw dev and afford to live with mommy, as soon as you have to be a man and take responsibility you realize its just another form of underpaid labor Sry to sound so neg but this is my experience with my last job, dealing with constant belittling from other techs who are less experienced causes this, best to diy

If you like it, go ahead, you'll probably enjoy it. But before committing to that, you should probably learn what's it's like to make games at a professional level, and make a few games by yourself. I eventually decided to stay away from the game industry just because I didn't find it as interesting as other Software engineering. Additionally I'm skeptical that I'd still be playing video games when I'm 40 so I wouldn't be able to connect well in the future.
