We can't rule out our own government disabling the steering mechanism so that it would crash into the bridge and so that our news media can have something to talk about instead of the fact that our foreign policy needs to be changed. The CIA will go to any lengths to protect the arms industry.

I am a engineering teacher and far from stupid. This bridge had not had any infrastructure check for over 2 years. The vessel was able to hit a stress point that was labeled "fair" condition. Bridges are made to handle 5. earthquakes, this bridge was not up to code. Period. and stop calling people stupid. Its not nice or accurate in this case.

Engineers take the weight of ships into consideration when building. This particular bridge had a "fair" rating. This bridge was not up to code and this could have been prevented. I am a engineering teacher, this is a Arch style bridge with anchor points that if up to code would have crumbled the ship and not collapsed the anchor. I doubt they admit that, since that would have them looking closely at the monies set aside to check infrastructure yearly.

@@Traysilenee The US has been behind in way of funding for needed infrastructure inspections/evaluations and repairs. Then 4 yrs were totally wasted by an imaginary (DJT) infrastructure bill 'coming our way' next week🙄Then constant political bickering ensued until Pres. @@Traysilenee This was not an arch bridge but a continuous through truss bridge. All the articles that talk about the code, say this bridge was indeed up to code. Looking at other articles of 'could this happen in XYZ city?' it appears that similar bridges in high-traffic shipping lanes all have some sort of extended bumper or 'island' around the bases of the anchor points to help prevent collisions. However, 100,000+ tons of steel is going to cause damage, no matter how well a bridge is planned. Bridges just aren't made to be impacted by giant ships.

as someone not involved i can speculate from the video that it looked like 1. lost power, started to drift. 2. power comes back on and he throws it into full reverse (first belch black smoke), but theres no steering in reverse, so prow swings even more towards bridge, and of course he still has forward momentum. 3. Puts it into low ahead to try and correct prow direction, black smoke stops, but its too late and realising momentum already too great 4. slams into full reverse again, more huge belches of black smoke just before impact.

Pillars should be redundant! That is, the bridge should be able to remain standing, and allow traffic already on it to complete the trip, if any pillar is completely undermined! Perhaps the bridge would need to be closed or have it's weight limit reduced afterwards, but if it had been standing, the damage would have been less, the casualties would have been less, and the reconstruction would have been much simpler and happened much faster!

Dolphins are circular sheet pile cells filled with materials like sand or concrete. They essentially serve as bumpers around the piers. If properly positioned, based on current direction, they would have redirected away from the pier or at minimum slowed down the ship reducing the impact force. They are not the most architecturally pleasant feature, but they might have saved lives.

Remember the Exxon Valdez fiasco? FYI, we knew the name, photograph and bio of that ship's pilot within hours of the event. Maybe I've missed it, but have they ID'd the pilot of this ship? That would seem to be relevant information given, you know, the ship rammed into and knocked down a bridge, killing people, and shut down one of the country's largest and most important ports of call.

Can we just stop trying to find a person to single out and target with stupid conspiracy theories & blame? If you watch the video, you can see thick black smoke suddenly pouring from the ship & the lights going out twice. They sent a Mayday saying they'd lost control/steering...which did save potential fatalities by stopping bridge traffic. If this was somebody's intentional act, I would think they'd have more sense than to ram a bridge when 200 million tons of containers, and many millions more of steel and concrete, are sitting over top of them.

Questions: 1. Since when have cargo vessels been allowed to deport in the night or early morning hours. The Congress has an obligation to look into this practice. What about insured? Did the Dali Cargo Vessel have insurance? It the repairs or rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge excesses what insurance the Dali cargo vessel had; would not the owners of the Dali be fully responsible for the repairs or rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge? footnote: president Biden should know that if this was an accident the owners and their insurance carrier have sole responsibility to make the Francis Scott Key Bridge whole. As this was not an act of Nature; the American people's government is not responsible for any related repairs or rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

IMO the workers should have been mandatorily evacuated the same time they stopped traffic, assuming it was the company (or state) that told them to stay onsite on the bridge, that company or state should be liable for hundreds of trillions of dollars (That is TRILLION WITH A T) to their families i don't care if they go out of business their decision in that scenario caused it.. if the company can't afford it then they now own the entire company, if its the state and they can't afford it then all statewide tax dollars now go to the families until paid off. don't care
