lapis lazuli was the finest and most expensive colour used in european renaissance paintings, they had to import it by ship from india or afghanistan, thats why they also called the colour made from it 'ultramarine', which is latin for 'beyond the sea'. lapis lazuli is also one of the reasons why Venice became so rich, back then most of the coulor traders were from Venice.

I definitely can appreciate the sentimentality behind your comment, and if those 3 watches aren’t your only 3 or they could be the safe-queens of the collection, I would totally agree. But why the hell would you want strictly a bunch of delicately made vintage stuff that they aren’t making any more of (that are also family heirlooms) for your daily beaters? If it was a robust watch for the time (like a vintage Submariner or something else tough/in the same vein), I could see that but like Christian says in the video “you NEED something to wear every day that you do everything in. They’re not all momentous occasions.” But hey, you do what you want and if maybe wearing your GGFather’s pocket watch is what floats your boat - don’t listen to a dickhead like me, and you wear that watch if that’s what you want Miss/Mr. Sixty-Nine all of the time 😊 (Spelling Edit)

4:40 It's called egg tempera and it was what painters often used before oil paints took over in the 15th century. Egg tempera (not to be confused with regular tempera which is a kind of gouache or poster paint) was made with egg yolks, water and finely ground pigments - such as the mentioned lapis lazuli, which was used for the color best known as ultramarine. It is more translucent than oil paint so colors appear more brilliant because light reflects against the (usually white) primer. It is also highly lightfast, and it won't yellow over time like many oils do. Oils became popular as they take much longer to dry than egg tempera, which allowed painters to blend more tones, refine their technique and create lifelike paintings. Oils also spread more easily, can be mixed with mediums and thinners, which all makes it easier to work on very large paintings. Oils are also easily stored in soft metal tubes which was a simple invention but one that enabled the emergence of plein air painting and impressionism. There are masterpieces painted with both egg tempera and oils, but the latter remain the gold standard for the art of painting. Never mind me, I'm just a watch nerd... :)

If I remember right, it was the only dye that could be used for religious paintings, specifically the Virgin Mary, simply because it doesn't fade. That's where the phrase sacrebleu originated. Sacred blue.

I'm in the process of selling all my watches (half a dozen mid tier Seiko and 700+ (no that's not a typo) collectable G-Shocks - it's a long story) and have now bought my exit watch, a Hesalite Moonwatch. I couldn't be happier, it's not small but then the legibility is excellent and it doesn't look silly on my 7" wrist, but best of all I set it in Feb 2023 and it's still within one second. That's more accurate than any of those quartz G-Shocks. I've got some overseas travel coming up and I want to take it with me so I can keep it wound up, but at the same time I don't want to change it to the new location's time-zone because I don't want to pull out the crown and break the spell.

@@timtim2949 The sapphire sandwich comes with sapphire caseback and I live in a hot country and have found that glass display casebacks stick to my wrist like a limpet. I much prefer steel caseback with some sort of embossment, the rougher the better for me. This allows more air between the case and the skin.

The Speedy definitely fits your wrist Michael! Because of the asymmetric case, the outer bezel and the black dial, it really fits and feels like a 40mm. It’s also supposed to be a bigger than “normal” watch since it’s a tool watch. Don’t let the specs get in the way of a fantastic watch!!

I started one year ago with my first proper watch: the Speedy. This year I am looking at a dive watch for my 30th birthday. The Tudor Black Bay 58 in blue really is high on my list. I only buy a watch linked to special occasions. Long term I’m also looking at the Rolex Datejust green dial with the jubilee bracelet. Only point I’m slightly worried about: bit boring collection or not? On the other hand, I truly believe one should buy what one adores and for me it’s these three. Fourth one would be a Cartier Tank maybe but that’s for in a few years since we have to save up as well a bit of course.

It's something you want to enjoy in your life, and you know, you take it where that's it, because banged app against banged app, you're gonna use your watches. You can't buy a wrong collection because you would get what you want, but if you're young, kind of makes certain people look at you try to get a girl's attention, you no chances are relaxed as the best way to go, although I've just bought a brand new grand safe go and I'm waiting for it to get here I bought the. $6.5k one watch: Two Tome Omega SMP Black ceramic and Rose (Sedna) gold on rubber strap. Or many other dial colors and if you like the steel strap (which I don’t love).

Off topic, but value any input. My friend and I bought stainless Rolex as tool watches. Any thoughts on why the brand didn't use the Cellini line as a vehicle for haute horology and offer Subs, Daytonas, Explorers, etc. only as task instruments. Also, any thoughts on Damasko and Junghans?

Honestly quite surprised that christooher ward is never mentioned in these videos, is it due to them only being accessible through their own website or you guys just aren't fans? About to get the C60 pro 300 bronze and already have the C60 lympstone which I love and think is amazing value for the price! What are other people's opinions?

@5:12 Michael talks about the IWC Porsche Design Compass watches. There are a few corrections that need to be made. 1. There are 3 different models and they used different finishes and materials... and in the case of one has the moonphase. - The 1978 ref. 3510 was Aluminum with PVD, available in Black and Green PVD. The face was updated in 1982 to the 1980's IWC logo changes. - The 1985 ref. 3551 Compass with Moonphase. While the case was Aluminum again as with the 3510, the bracelet supplied used another material IWC and PD introduced with the ref. 3701 Chronograph - Delrin (a plastic) - The 1991 ref. 3511 Titan Compass. This model was presented in Titanium which the 2 brands made famous a decade prior with the ref.3700 Titan Chrono. The crown was moved from 3 to 4-o'clock. There is also some more finishing details that set it apart. 2. None of these have a "beacon" as Michael said. The only watches with such a device are the Breitling Emergency, Emergency Mission and Emergency II. At the time the Compass itself was "high tech" and special. 3. The lightest of the 3 is the 3511 because of the Titanium case and bracelet. The Moonphase (3551) because of the Delrin bracelet is the 2nd lightest, and the 3510 with all Aluminum construction is the heaviest. Unfortunately, the Delrin bracelets do not age well... and tended to fail and so many of the 3551's you see in the market are on replacement straps (mostly leather as the Delrins are OOP for many years). 4. Of the 3 there are differences in the flip mechanism to flip up the watch. The 3510 and 3551 just release the lock and it lifts a little and you raise it further. The 3511 upgraded this with a spring action that very satisfyingly "hops" up a bit. 5. All 3 are 39mm. Which I think will suit Michael's wrist well. The watch is a time-capsule of cool. In 2010, modern Porsche Design (no longer working with IWC) released a re-issue of the Compass as the Porsche Design Compass Heritage (ref. P6520) but now in 42mm... it is too big for the look. I think you will like the 3511 the most. The 3551 is very nice but hard to find with a good strap. Enjoy the hunt.

Don’t love the Daytona as a 1 watch collection. I actually own the “light” steel model (though black dial) from this video but I rarely wear it because the dial legibility is actually terrible. No doubt it looks awesome, though…

There's no point to make a list... I like too many things. Probably a tantalum Journe, a Triple Split, the Zeitwerk, the Odyseus chrono, the Perpetual MB&F, the AK06 from Akrivia, AP RO with a manufacture caliber, the Hamatic M. Grossmann, the 222 VC, some Breguets, a couple Gronefelds, the chrono surely, the Kodo, there's Kari in there somewhere, and a DeBethune, Blancpain Bathy chrono on a 2020 SS bracelet, a discontinued GO PanoRetroGraph, a Minerva (Mont Blanc) chrono, I can continue...
