6 Mountain Bike Tire Inserts Compared Head To Head
From the EWS winning CushCore that most of us are familiar with to the lesser-known Tannus Armour, Henry Quinney compares 6 of the current crop of tire inserts head to head. Read the full review: pinkbike.link/...

I once had to fit a 27,5+ cushcore to a 2.6" Schwalbe tire... Minimum tire size to use with these and it was a PAIIIIN. But if you dont do that, it's not that hard to install.

@@Phonophobia yeah that sounds like a pain! the normal one on a 2.35 nobby nick is hard but only because the bead of the tire is so hard..on maxxis its relatively easy with a car tire as support for the bike wheel

Really should have tested the same tire without inserts too! That difference would mean the most to anyone not using inserts today, and would be a nice reference.

The rim wouldn't have survived probably. This tire is great for pinch flat protection, however it doesn't save the rim from dinging.

HENRYYYYYY!! He's back! For a split second, I thought...."Hey, did I click an old GMBN video link by accident?" I see he's still got the same twisted sense of humor. "Rougher than moonshine brewed in a prison toilet." NICE!! Tannus is the way to go over CushCore. First hand experience with the protection, and installing both...multiple times, and for me, it's not even close when you consider it's half the price and weight! I am interested to see how the other contenders fare, but I'm a believer in Tannus for sure!
If you play the video at .25x speed you can see how the different inserts attenuate the rebound of the tire, with inserts like the vittoria and tannus keeping the tire in contact with the rock the entire time. Important to note though how the rear wheel hits the dirt before the rock on some runs, but for others the tire is free falling when it hits the rock.
From UK to Canada, congratulations Henry 🍾🥂🎉🎊👍

My LBS has a deal with Tannus since their US headquarters is local. I threw the tubeless ones in my e-bike and they seem really good. I can hit rock gardens with total confidence.

Interesting to see that on the square edge rock some of the inserts really had a strong damping effect. While others had a very pronounced rebound.
@jfrtbikgkdhjbeep9974

yeah, i prefer the damping ... tanner and cushcore ?
I own a pair of rimpact inserts. My bike has 130/120 mm travel with 35 mm internal width rims and 2.5 Maxxis aggressors in the Exo casing. I bought the originals. Installment was pretty easy, and so far (4-5 months now?) they’ve held up well. I haven’t noticed any difference in sidewall stiffness or anything like that, but my rims are pretty wide and I’m not very sensitive rider. I also haven’t felt any differences in weight, but again, I’m not super sensitive. However they have most definitely saved my rear tire and rims on multiple occasions, and for that I keep them in
Hi Henry, nice to see you back on KZread! Looking forward to seeing more of you over the next few months. Totally rad dude 🤙🏻
So awesome to see Henry again!!!!!

@@jfrtbikgkdhjbeep9974 - Tannus, with tube, won't let you down! I've run mine over the nastiest sharp rocks, haven't failed me yet. 20-25 psi.
Glad to see Henry again :)
you guys didn't give any thoughts on any of them...I mean granted yes I did slow the footage down and pause it but it wasn't lined up accurately so it was difficult to compare, what I noticed was cushcore and the tannus seemed to be the most supportive followed by the rimpact, then the huck Norris and panzer in last seemingly since they appeared to allow the rock or compression to get much closer to the rim itself, now if they still protect the rims and have other benefits maybe that's not a bad thing so it would have been nice to hear some thoughts after you riding them.
Henry is baaaaaaack!!!! We missed you
Great to see you again Henry. Loved your insight since the GMBN days.
Considering how comprehensive this comparison is, I'm a little surprised the Nukeproof ARD wasn't present.

I agree. ARD is great considering its cheaper price.
Good to see you Henry! Been a while.
I was hoping to see a test with super low PSI to try to get the tire to slide side to side over the insert. I'm very curious how those inserts will affect quick, tight corners.
Heck yeah we’ve got Henry back!!!!!
This is missing a test of a homemade backer-rod insert.
OHHH it makes so much sense now seeing Henry here.

HENRY!!!!!!!! Im so glad to see your face again!!!! I missed you!!!!!!
Been using Tannus Armour tubeless inserts on my 2021 Intense 951 since Jan of this year, and quite honestly both my wheelsets roll quicker with them than without them. (The weight is about the same as running a tube) With “twin air” chambers, everything smooths out, but the bike still feels connected to the ground. Can’t say the same about the other tire inserts.

WOOOOOOOO!! i've been wondering where the sweetest voice in mtb went after GMBN. great to see you Henry!
Hard to make heads or tails of the review. Was there any rim damage? Was one particularly bad/good? Cost vs. performance? Any difficulties installing any model?
I tried Tannus Armour this winter.I don't know how you're saying they're only around 150 grams, mine were around 300 grams each and other reviews suggest the same. It's not just the weight, I am convinced they also add significant rolling resistance by changing the way the tyre deforms as it meets the ground. They made my XC bike virtually unrideable. I persevered for about 6 weeks then gave up and threw them in the bin.
They really released this vid 10 min after I finish installing a pair of rimpacts 😂
I got cushcore recently, 100% worth it and weight is not an issue (already riding a heavy ass Meta TR so maybe that’s why)
@davidwilliams3397
Жыл бұрын
Riding a heavy assed bike is the man making stuff. I am using my Meta TR for mega avalanche next year when I shall be knocking on 59...... I have bought some cushcores this week and will install them on my hard tail (a Meta HT) and see what they are like
my take away from this was that tannus armour is the best for techy trails where you will be hitting your wheel not as hard but more often, and the cushcore seems to be best for flow trails or trails where they will be bigger impacts but less often

Okay I saw Henry’s name under a lot of Pinkbike articles but wasn’t sure if he just wasn’t a guest writer for years. I guess this video answers the question!
Unfortunately lighter tires rarely come with dh super soft tread compounds
Henry! What a welcomed surprise !
There he is again ..... If I hadn't subscribed to PB yet, I'd do it now
Henry is back yay. For a second I was wondering if it was GMBN.
Henry's back!!! Hell yea Pink Bike
This ought to be one of the silliest "comparison tests" i have seen in my life. Comparing visually (!) over a grand total of one rock hit and one jump, as if one could replicate exactly the same approach, in speed/angle/jump height, to that rock hit or jump . All you are watching is the variation in that approach, nothing to do, or at best completely confounded, with the inserts that are in the tires.
Who’s the hero who was changing the tire inserts back to back trail side?
You are back in the game Henry, love it!
Henry! Good to see you on KZread again!

“rougher than moonshine, brewed in a prison toilet” 🤣
Awesome that Henry is a PB presenter now! Big upgrade from GMBN
Need more Pepi's Tire Noodle, one of the best in my experience.
I have Vittoria airliner for about 8 months. Nice insert, was no brap on low pressure and rim is OK. Riding on trails with 1.6bar in front, 1.5bar on back wheel. Sometimes 1.3bar on back wheel , works well on hardtail with 2.6 Tyre
