6 Months Without a Smartphone & How I Switched to a Flip Phone (Nokia 2720 Flip)

I switched to a flip phone 6 months ago and I'm not turning back! I share how I have adapted to not having a smart phone, and why my life has been better since I've eliminated my Samsung phone for a Nokia 2720 flip phone. I took on this challenge in July 2021, and to this day I am still using my flip phone, with no withdrawals. It's worth noting that I am a student, so I do not need a smart phone for my job (we will find out what happens once I graduate). Of course you will realise that most of the tools I used on my phone, I simply use on my laptop now - but this has prevented access to things when I am out and about e.g. hiking, meeting friends or going on holiday. So I feel the benefit of this more when I am not at home.
Have you ever considered ditching your smart phone?
Why I switched to a flip phone: • Why I Switched to a Fl...
I'll probably make some follow-up videos about this - I could even do a Q&A about life with a flip phone if you are interested or have loads of questions.

I did back in 2015 (My highschool years). I gave it up not volunteerly (I basically fried my smartphone), but it was still fine. At that time I was using my old Sony Ericsson z550i for a year, and I didn't have much of an issues with that, because I still could access messengers through my cheap-ass asus tablet. But now it would be a bit harder, because I have close friends abroad, and don't really want to give up a telegram and its convenience of instant messaging. I've gotta get rid of twitter though. It is very toxic and annoying most of the time (But regardless of that I spend a ton of time using it🤦‍♂)

I agree with you 100%. I gave up my smart phone over 5 months ago, because I was wasting too much time on it. I had headaches and text neck from staring at my smart phone so much. I was dizzy too. I now only use a very basic cell phone. I feel so much better and more free. My brain feels younger, fresher and more alert without a smart phone. I will never go back to a smart phone. No matter what!

I agree, I went to high school in the early to mid 2000s. When I graduated, Facebook was still exclusive to college students. I feel bad for younger people who never got to experience life without social media, smartphones and the internet. Many of them have been addicted to screens since they were toddlers, it's just so sad.

It's so cool to hear about people who have a sort of "awakening" after switching from a smartphone to a "dumb" phone. When you see people now with their noses buried in their phones oblivious to what's going on around them do you sometimes think that they don't realize what they're missing?

Hey Ted, Speaking as someone who completely gets why someone would someone would switch to using a basic phone, I don't use social media that much. I use KZread, if that counts but my twitter posting history is blank and I can't remember the last time I checked Facebook. That said, a few years ago my mother lost the use of her legs. Doing so has meant she is regularly in and out of hospitals for weeks at a time because of pressure sores etc - most recently a broken kneecap. WhatsApp has been great for being able to keep in touch with her and send her nice photos to cheer her up without disturbing other patients with constant phone calls (though we did speak by phone too). I was messaging her like this one evening as I walked the 30 seconds from gym to supermarket when some older gentleman walks past with his bike and moans "why's everyone on their phones these days?!" I didn't bother telling this monumentally pompous prig I'd rather be using a phone in public than talking to myself. When smartphones can do just about everything, it means that every person using one could be using it for anything from frivolous, to serious, to important, to critical matters. And, by the way, if I'd been using a "dumb phone" (the term is feature phone) with WhatsApp like the one in this video, that guy would still have seen me using my phone in public, "oblivious" as you put it, as if people can't alternate between paying attention to their surroundings and then typing the next line of their message. I've seen your sentiment come up a lot over the years and while I'm sure you see it as a lamenting of a time when everyone was much happier and engaged with their surroundings, the truth of it is phones are technology: they can be used for productivity, for joy, for stress relief or, yes, be a waste of time. And when you see someone "staring" at one in public, you have literally no idea what's on that screen. So how about being a bit less judgemental?

@@tomgl6684 Hi Tom. Thank you for the reply. I'm sorry to hear about your Mom's health issues. You make some valid points in your response but I think that we are talking about two different things. The fact that you saw the guy with his bicycle means that you were not oblivious to your surroundings. Have you not ever had to move out of the way of someone who had their nose buried in their phone to keep them from running into you? Have you never seen someone so engrossed in their phone that they walk right in front of a car? It's not judgemental to say that these people are oblivious to their surroundings. It is a simple observation. If they really need to be that focused on their phone for an important reason such as checking on a relative they should take a moment to stop in a safe place to do what they need to do. But most of the time that is not the case. I just did a simple search for "people waste time on their phone" and there is article after article about studies showing that most people are just goofing around on their phones scrolling social media or playing games. The point of my original post was not so much about the typo of phone but that it is great to see some people having an awakening and recognizing their addiction to their phone. I don't see anything judgemental about that. It's no different than saying it's great to see an alcoholic or a drug addict get sober and realize what they've been missing out on. I feel like I also need to point out here that when you say "I've seen your sentiment come up a lot over the years and while I'm sure you see it as a lamenting of a time when everyone was much happier and engaged with their surroundings," that I think you got the wrong impression about me. I feel like you have the impression that I'm some grouchy unhappy person who's angry that everyone is on their phone (like the old guy with the bicycle). I'm not like that at all. I'm a "happy go lucky" optimistic person. I enjoy interacting with other people and sometimes there is less opportunity for that when so many people are using their phones but I never walk around complaining to myself about people on phones. 😉 To end on humorous note, my old flip phone will no longer work since my provider shut off 2G and 3G so now I have to get a new phone... hmph... Maybe I'll get a smartphone... Thank you again for your reply Tom. I appreciate the opportunity for a friendly discussion.

@@ted458 And you seem to have missed my point: that a device that can do anything means you have no idea what has kept the other person so engrossed. That person you think is oblivious to the world around them? Maybe even the one who bumps into someone? They could be scrolling Instagram or they could be working out something to do with a poorly relative, a financial problem or something more serious. "Social media" is a very catch all term and while it's true I personally try to avoid most social media platforms, there is a whole gamut of human activity there that people could be using it for - frivolous or more serious. If you're worried about social media addiction, the answer is we need more talk around healthy limits and/or self imposed timeouts. If you think the issue is people not looking where they're going when using phones, we need to be talking about that too. We don't say how great it would be to get rid of cars because some people don't handle them properly when they're making an unnecessary two minute drive that they could have walked. It's just a very condescending approach. "It's great to see an alcoholic or drug addict get sober and realise what they've been missing out on". Seriously dude? People can drive cars when needed and enjoy long walks in the country. I walk the 20 minutes to work but drive out of town to get to see the folks at the other end of the country once a month and you'd have no idea that's where I was going from just seeing me behind the wheel. Similarly, that teenager behind the phone could be a smartphone addict filly living in the digital world - or they could have a far more active one than you or I ever would - even if they accidentally bump into someone when they're checking where their sports match is happening this weekend. Phones are a tool, they have uses and abuses. They are not crack cocaine. That's my point. Take care now.

  • @ted458

@@tomgl6684 I never made any claims to know what other people are doing on their phones. I also acknowledged that they may be doing an important task such as checking on a relative. I made a very reasonable point that if they can't do that task (whatever it might be) without walking into other people that they could simply take a moment to stop and complete the task. I am not concerned about social media addiction. It doesn't matter to me what people are doing on their phone. It's their business. However it is a safety concern for everyone when a person is so engrossed in their phone (or anything else) that they are a hazard to others. If you don't want to call that "oblivious" then call it something else. The specific term does not matter to me. I never suggested or implied that we should get rid of phones (or cars). I agree that phones are a tool. I recognize that they are not crack cocaine but it is well established that many people are addicted to them. When a person is able to overcome that it should be celebrated (which was the point of my original post). It is not condescending to recognize that.

I will not allow my future kids to own a smartphone at too early of an age, as I want them to focus on sports and education. A dumbphone could be an option for them until of age. However for me, I have taught myself how to not rely on social media at all and going to a dumb phone would only hinder my ability to do tasks and be productive in my lifestyle. I do need to refer to my laptop every time I need to look up cooking recipes, dictionary word meanings, scientific research, weight training strategies. I do not need to carry a camera around with me when I want to take pictures. I do need to carry around an old mp3 player with outdated music and bad sound quality whenever I go for a run or train at the gym, especially when I have Bluetooth good quality headphones for music details. I do need a computer to be looking at KZread videos such as this one. I also do need to be typing like a turtle when communicating with others. The list goes on and on. Just work on your mindset, and learn to free yourself from social media, by realizing it is not an important aspect of your life. Only then will you learn to focus on the right things in life, while still owning a great tool in your pocket to only accelerate you with your tasks and daily life.

Awesome video. I have a flip phone too, Alcatel 3025X. But I think I'm gonna change it for this Nokia that you have. Smartphones are doing a lot of distraction, and kinda reducing social contact among people. Almost everyone walks today with earphones in ears and face glued on the smartphone screen. It's little bit scaring. Thanks again for the video. Kindest regards from Croatia. ;)

I had a similar experience with driving earlier this year. I was in Atlanta (where I grew up) and my data wasn't working, meaning I had to find free wifi to mootch off whenever I wanted to put an address into Maps. It forced me to actually pay attention to the road signs and...you know what....it was an adventure. I gained a lot of confidence and was even able to get around the notorious Atlanta airport and surrounding area. It just took some making mistakes, turning around and trying again, and then I learned. It was pretty freeing, actually.

I like the 2780 but can't get them in the UK sadly. What model did you go for in the end? I really thought I'd have more withdrawl symptoms from lack of smartphone but its been incredibly peaceful and liberating so far.

Girl, congratulations on your video. It's really great to be able to ''get out of the social bubble''. I also intend to focus on my minimalism kit and give up the internet a little (in general). Personally, I don't like music streaming like Spotify, I prefer Deezer because its quality is superior, although I still have my music downloaded (I currently have around 680 songs on my sd card). I own CDs and LPs too and enjoy listening to them more than digitally. Anyway, I bought a mini cell phone just to live in minimalism, but I want to try with the dumbphones. It's a SOYES XS16, it's small, compact, I can listen to my music, podcasts, play extremely lite and casual games. It serves me very well so far. I installed a Minimalist Launcher and left only what was necessary on the home screen. Well, I don't want to make the comment longer than what is already there, besides, great video, you gained another subscriber. Big hugs from Brazil! ;)

Leaving smartphone for a regular phone feels freedom and liberation. I tried this for short amounts of time mainly in vacations. However, smartphone for me is for productivity. It’s an essential part of my life. I quit social networks years ago, and I can stay for a long time in transportation without looking in my phone unless there something important. Maybe quitting social networks altogether is the key. Still does not give the freedom of dump phones, but it achieves the goal while keeping the benefits of a smartphone.

I’ve tried this plus many other options of trying to disconnect. The trick is getting rid of social media, not the smart phone. I’ve been off social media for a year and am definitely not going back. All you need is a text chat with your closest friends then you’ll be good. With having a smart phone without social media (even KZread), I rarely ever checked my phone except for the occasional text and email. I would start the day off with 100% battery and end it with around 93%. With social media it would die around 2:00 p.m.

Most of all, I grew tired of reading documents and watching videos on its small screen. Now I use my smartphone mostly as a phone. I still connect it to my Bluetooth amplifier to listen to online music. Although nowadays I play it during dinner, to listen to work by Klaus Schulze or Takashi Kokubo. Relaxing atmospheric music. I want to make the transition back to CDs but my collection is nowhere big enough. At least now I'm more comfortable reading documents and watching KZread videos off my tablet. And my phone stays where I know I can find it.

I got my first car around 18 or 19. I hated modern cars, and I loved the look of the older cop cars, so I bought a Mercury Grand Marquis. I was happy to find that it could hold a few CDs at once, and I loved to rotate them and switch them out. I'm now 26 and wanted a pickup truck to be my next car, but this video reminded me that I would most likely be sacrificing my disc drive if I do that, so I think I'll stick with the same make I already have.
