Another option would be to find a broken tree branch around the neighborhood and treat it for pests before staking your plant. It would help avoid the lumber store aesthetic and would be free to try!

I have e Way to extend it also… just pre-drill holes in the top of the one that you’re putting in you can also drill it after it’s already in the pot. And use little dowels in the holes and then do the same on the board that you’re extending it with…. with some wood glue in there and it’ll hold it!!! I save all the little extras (dowels) they send for things you need to put together for this reason.

You may also be able to drill matching holes on the end cuts and put wood pegs in there to hold them together. Wood glue the wood pegs in. I used to work at Howard Miller making the wood frames for all kinds of clock’s and thats how we used to join them together. Just a thought, it may save a lot of cutting? 🌺💚🙃 Yes dowels 🌺💚🙃

After spending too much time caring for my 50 plants, I'm gave away about 12 of them. Some of the remaining have died mostly due to neglect. Some died because they were not propagated correctly. I even had a table that I called the ICU. No more. I do have other hobbies I want to spend time with, so I am not going to buy or propagate anymore. Your comment about spraying a moss pole is a concern for me since I with all these plants I don't have time for that, but now that I have 'weeded out' a lot of plants, I can do that now; spend time with a few that I have. Plus no more 'fussy' plants that demand a perfect world, like Peace Lily. Never again. Thanks for this info.

I love my planks! I use thin wooden boards that I find in the trim area of a Lowe’s or homedepot. I like them because they are thin and light. I recently found a 6 foot tomato stake set and the wood stakes are 1 inch by 1 inch but 6 ft tall. So thin enough for small climbers but long enough to cut to size. But my monstera is attached to his pile and my Mexicanum and Dark Lord are starting to attach.

I use plant grafting tape it doesn’t have the harmful adhisive as regular tape it allows humidity at the nodes allowing aerial roots to attach way faster and very easy to remove no harm to the plants. It’s like cling wrap so it’s self adhesive. Give that a try for me. Your plants look so beautiful BTW keep up the great work.

I used a short piece of leftover juniper fence pole for my monstera. It had been cut in a vampire killing tool kind of a shape which made it really easy to apply into the pot when I repotted the plant😄 I intented it for staking only with no expectations of it taking hold, but it started to wrap an aerial root around the pole and attached onto it by growing small side roots from it into the wooden pole! I'm so impressed and hope this will work with other projects too. Although I heard philodendrons might have hard time attaching onto wood. We'll see. Thank you for sharing your experiments!

Cedar is one of the most porous woods hence it wont rot because it take years and years for it to rot. Keeping it moist is a challenge because of this.I my years of working with cedar siding back in the 90's I would see on occasion ivy growing on it but because you get more humidity outside.

If you do the pocket holes you can do them on the back of the planks so it's not seen... I would do 2 (one on each side of the plank) on the bottom and one in the center for the plant going on the top. Also pocket hole jigs are very affordable and useful when you want to marry two pieces of wood but want it to be virtually invisible.

I have a bunch of plants on “planks” now thanks to Caitlin’s sage advice and amazing results 😂 and they’re all doing well. Small untreated pine grade stakes for me. So far only my cebu blue is actually attaching 🎉 sweet summer child that he is 🥰 Two basic syngoniums def seem to have an affinity for the wood and leaves are 📈 in size, but most exciting are my scindapsus argyreus and pellonia repens - both trying to shingle up bamboo branches I recently repotted them onto 👀😭 As far as extending the poles, I had to extend my cebu, I basically did what you said - drilled a sm hole in the top, added a dowel with wood glue, then put the extension on using the dowel; to be safe I also staple gunned the sides to make sure it was sturdy since it’s so tall now. *random, I also had to change out a bamboo stake my burle marx was holding 🤗 onto with his aerials, they have since reattached to the new longer stake. Been wondering how easily a plant would/could reattach to a proper plank if it had to be upsized 🤔

Do you have to regularly spray the nodes of the plant to encourage the growth of air roots ? Because I have a large leaf pothos on a moss pole (a cheapy that doesn't hold any moisture) and a year later it still isn't growing node roots and attaching. I was thinking of switching to some natural wood branches but I'm still not sure how to promote the growth of air roots or node roots.

  • @joannanovara815

I've tried moss poles, moss planks, trellises and wood planks in lower humidity conditions. Essentially they just act as supports and aerial roots won't grow or attach. Depending on the plant and growth pattern I find a pretty trellis to be the most appealing visually. I like the idea of a round stake/piece of wood!

Do you think a piece of panty hose or clothe pressing the plant to the board would work for root attachment? Or do you think the tape creates a more humid micro climate and is why it works? I just think cloth would be easier to remove and less risk of damaging the plant.

Off topic question, do you currently grow your thai constellation in your de la tanks soil mix? I just bought one for the first time, so I'm a bit nervous when it comes to getting the right soil mixture for it so it doesn't rot 😩

Yes!!! I 110% suggest it for Thai constellation. I’ve had mine in it for a long time and it’s been super happy 🥰

have you tried a moss pole with a solid surface on the back and a mesh wire surface on the front so they lose less moisture? did it make a difference in watering frequency?

I've tried it with a larger size plank type pole. The exposed surface was about 5" wide so it has a lot of exposure to the air and still dried out fairly quickly. I think it might retain moisture with a smaller moss plank.

Have you seen Caitlin from plant life in the tropics journey with her planks? She really likes to use tape, and finds that it’s not long before the roots grab on to the plank :)

Hello Becca from Puerto Rico!! I actually prefer the moss poles with water bottles trickling down the pole…really easy. I add a wood stake inside my pole and burn the wood that goes inside the pot…charcoal…double benefit. 💚🪴💚🙋🏼‍♀️

I’m tired of working hard to moisten the moss poles all the time, plus the wet dog smell 🤢🤮I’ll need to try this method in the next time I have a plant to grow upwards 🪴
