Hi Gary First things first. Love your videos. Great insights. I have a clack based water softener. I have been having hard water issues for several weeks and there’s not a thing I haven’t tried. Literally replaced media to all kinds of valves and seals and by swapping many different parts. On a 1 cuff media I am only getting roughly 400 gallons of soft water at best. In my ongoing iterations, wondering if tank size and the amount of media in it plays any role in overall regen process. I have tank that could take over 1.5 cuft and still have 12-15” freeboard. Currently my tank is about half full with 1cuft media and I have set it up as 28k grain capacity and Guelph water being hard (25) I have set up my hardness at 32 and salt of 11.5lbs. Wondering if reducing to a smaller media tank will help regen better. Thanks

I don't think a smaller tank will make any difference. Have you tried the suggestions from this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/lXqtj69vmZrFfdY.html

Hi Gary. And recommendations on how to clean the shower walls? Appears to be calcium buildup on our shower walls. Thank you.

CLR or Limeaway wiork well but you need to let them sit on the surface for awhile.

Hi Gary. To do the injector inspection you need to remove the injector cap. My Clack WS1 is so tight i bruised my hand trying to take it off to no avail. Can you recommend a tool to use so I can remove the cap and not damage the plastic exterior or my hand.

Hi Gary, I have a water boss 900 softener that when in the service position continually has water flowing through it. The water is coming out the drain hose into my sump pump. The brine tank has salt about half way full. It seems that the water is not flowing into the brine tank. Currently, I have it in the bypass position. Any suggestions?

You likley need to rebuild the valve, which is actually fairly straight forward. We have the parts here waterestore.com/products/aquamaster-drive-end-cap-assembly-54520 and the how to video here kzread.info/dash/bejne/nm2Wz5qNnZjJmrg.html

Hi Gary. I have a clack valve head on my softener. The drain line is constantly trickling/dripping water. Is that the sign of a bad seal pack?

Hey Gary, I’m purchasing my first home and it has a water softener system since it uses a well in Southwest Florida and the water is very hard. I knew nothing about these systems until I found your videos. On the softener tank I have a Clack 3-button valve and on the tank labeled “sulfur filter” I have the metered Clack valve. I watched a video where you explained how metered valves are more commonly used on softeners than the 3-button Clack since those use a day setting for regen. Do you think the installers of the system swapped the valves by mistake? I had a tech come out to get the tank and system back up to speed since it’s been vacant for several months and the brine tank was empty, clock times were off, and I knew nothing about the settings. They claimed they have settings for other homes all around since we’re all on well water and he set my regen time to every 3 days. When I heard him say I’ll probably use 2-3 bags of salt per month I was shocked. I’ll be living alone in the house so I also wonder if I could go a few more days between regen. Thanks!

The number of days between regenerations is based on a calculation using your hardness , size of water softener and how many people in your home. All of the water softeners we sell are metered so we don't use that calculation but your tech certainly should have. What are your numbers?

  • @FloridAlaskan

@@GarytheWaterGuy Thanks, Gary! The tech didn’t go over the numbers but used a list of settings they use for all customers in that area since everyone’s on well water. I’ll be the only occupant in the house so maybe I can ask the tech for my numbers when he comes back to replace the pressure tank (warranty claim). That way I can use the data to find the days. One other question: On my Clack valves, I have the red directional arrow bypass valves. Do those allow me to half open/adjust the amount of soft vs hard water that goes into the house? I saw one of your videos explaining if you feel like your water is too soft, you showed a style of valve that was circular and allowed you to let some of the hard water into the house by adjusting the openness of the valve. Thanks!

Question: I have a WS1 2.5 CuFt w/18" Brine tank w/ 10x resin. I planned on extra bathrooms and flow later on so I sized up a bit. I'm thinking my hardness might still be low during my regens and that I could push it longer, is it common to test your water and change the clack setting to regenerate less? seems like a waste of money/salt. Just curious is this is something you've heard of or done before, similar to looking at static drop for filter changeouts on your return air filter for your home. Also should I be concerned about channeling in the zeolite if my system is alittle over powered? My hardness is 28.4gm/USgallon or 34grn/MPgal with iron of .34 mg/L. It's a residential well in Canada

  • @GarytheWaterGuy

Definitely the regeneration frequency needs to be set based on the number of people in your housdehold (water usage) and your hardness and iron content. If your water softener is a metered water softener and is set correctly it should take care of itself. Keep in mind though that it must regenerate at least every 14 days or you will get channelling. Which is why we never oversize a water softener.

My Viqua clack valve water softener is programmed to do regeneration automatically. So when it goes below the reserve capacity starts doing it. But is not doing it at my set time 11.00pm. It's is doing it hours before why is that? I checked all the programming, and everything is the way it should be to do it at 11pm. Can you advise? Thanks.

  • @GarytheWaterGuy

Is the current time set correctly? Viqua softeners are pre fill, so likely it is starting earlier to let the water soak up the salt to become brine. You might need to ask Viqua, since I am not sure and son't use (or like) pre fill softeners
