Thank you so much for sharing your decades of knowledge building with us. You do know your creating a bunch of primitive pottery addicts right? 🤪 the journey is part of the joy!

Super video Andy, I wish someone was making these videos 40 years ago when I was experimenting 😜. And I still am experimenting. 😀

Thanks Tony! Yes, I feel the same way, it was super hard to learn when you and I were doing it. KZread would have been a huge help back then. My video on Wednesday will talk about how I learned back in those days before the internet.
Sorry I missed the live program, thanks for the recording.

Watching this video again, its like the gold mine that produces even when you think you got it all! You had mentioned a James Kunkle? I didn't find his channel, but I was wondering if you had the link. Thanks again, Sir and I am sure to revisit this one!

What a very interesting and informtive channel. I have always had an interest in natural pottery and while I haven't done anything more than a weekend course x3 in Raku pottery, my interest has never died in 30 years.

are you a professor or instructor or teacher, by profession? you are so well spoken and explain things so well. i think i commented in the past that i live next to cowee, nc where wedgewood exported clay from this area. Cherokee in this area. my father had a pottery factory in the 70s in Louisiana . we lived in s.e. area near bogalusa and he would go into Mississippi and shovel a truckload of clay. he figured out how to do it on his own. i remember him using an old big cement mixer to mix his slip. he made his own molds from pots and antique pitchers etc. no idea what he added to the slip. hed glaze some and he built his own kiln that you crawl up into and it held a lot of pottery. years later i went home and granny had a turtle pot that had been in her yard for 30+years and it was solid as a rock! i enjoy watching your videos.

Thanks. I teach pottery classes and I teach on KZread, so I guess I am a teacher.
1.I am planning to make a stone pizza oven. After I use it I wanted to put in a old school bean pot with lid in it as the oven cools down to eat the next day. Have you ever made a bean pot to place in our kiln as it cools for a meal the next day? 2. Have you ever made a put with weight to make fermented sauerkraut? Mine just broke and am interested in old school preservation.

I've made a bean pot, I would probably want some handles on it if I was going to be placing it in a hot oven and removing while hot. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZaj3MNxg8nHiqw.html No, I don't know anything about sauerkraut pots, it might be an interesting project though.
Thanks for all you do , you are an inspiration to us. I have a question problem I encountered . If I polish to high. The manganese paint doesn't adhere. It rubs off.Could it be the binder in the paint.

What sorts of organic binders can you use as binders for your paint?
@AncientPottery
10 ай бұрын
Almost any plant cooked down will form a sticky substance that will work as a binder but those with a high sugar content will give a higher yield.
This is very valuable information, thank you for sharing. What tool do you suggest for breaking down rocks into powder to add to clay to form a slip?
@AncientPottery

You can just use a brick or stone on a driveway or sidewalk. I use a hand cranked grain mill amzn.to/3ysMzil (affiliate link)

@@AncientPottery Interesting. I appreciate this information because I enjoy doing pottery but a lot of the tools like electric kilns are very expensive. This is a great way to make pottery at home using very basic tools. I appreciate you sharing this knowledge.
👍
Could you use something like molasses as a binder?

When you burnish a pigment in to the clay of a bowl or pot, how do you keep the design lines from blurring?
@AncientPottery
2 жыл бұрын
It’s like coloring in the lines. You have to be careful. I see smudges on the ancient sherds too where they weren’t careful enough.
Hi Andy! At a pottery workshop I attended, I thought you mentioned that maple syrup could be used for the organic black paint! Did I remember correctly? I have lots of mesquite beans in my yard right now, but if I could avoid the hassle of turning them into syrup, I'd like to! Thanks :)

You can use a lot of things. I have experimented with maple syrup and corn syrup and all kinds of things and they work. Just less than authentic that's all.
