Love the dueling chronys! I just shot IMR 4451 for the first time today. I hope to get a video up tomorrow on my results.

I'm glad to see some good results with the IMR powder. Been holding off on trying it. Think I'll pick some up to test now.

This is great and has given me load of ideas. Thank you.

After all prepping, I generally sort all the brass by weight. When brass slugs are created, the heaviest molten brass tends to settle at the bottom of the caldron rather quickly. This is why you see some variation in the same "lot" of formed brass. Density accounts for variation you see in dimensionally identical brass. Different residues condition the bore and do affect accuracy, particularly if they have a copper fouling inhibiting agent. Nice work!

Great video man! I've been using 41gr of RL17 in my Savage LRP with a 140Gr Nosler CC for a while--my gun seems to really like it. I bought a lot of those bullets in bulk years ago--still working through them.

I love 4451.. it has almost became my favorite 6.5 powder. and yes u can get it to 2700fps.. I load my 140s to around 2650 usually just cause I want to be easy on the bore and barrel and I have nice scopes on all my rifles so its not a big deal to dial the lil thing on top called a scope dial.. lolol some ppl crack me up when they load like way over max and only get a small gain in velocity because it isn't efficient any more.. not to mention they will go through a barrel every year.. and mine are more consistent most of the time then ppl that do that so in the end they end up asking me what I do or what I use and I just say back off from max around 1.5 grain and work with your oal and see what happens.. I have pretty good luck doing that with most bullet/powder combos... love your videos Johnny you do great work and I can tell you are passionate about what you do I think that is awesome and hard to find these days.. keep up the great work man!!!! im sure a lot of ppl are reloading ammo which is what the reloading community needs so company's will create new products and bring them to market fairly fast.. look at all the new presses that have came out in the last 2 years or so.. :)

Hey Johnny, I have been using both RL-17 and the RDF 140 grn bullets. I have had many trips to the range with multiple powder charges and different bullet seating depths.(Very finicky bullets) I have found out of my rifle to work the best, .080" of jump and a charge of 42.1. This recipe produced a .289" group at 100 yards, 2851 AVMV, and 8.0 for the SD. Taking it out to 1K this next Saturday, we will see how it does. Hope this information helps.

Hello love your show so far keep up the good work. I do have a question I want to see if you followed up with the IMR 4451 in the 6.5 Creedmoor? I'm a reloader myself and I worked up that load however I had to go beyond Max load data according to Hornady and my average feet per second is 2775 in a bolt action rifle

Notice how clean the brass is? Conforming to the chamber better than before.

I just bought that gun and was looking for powder information so thank you for the video. I am going to bed my action and change out the trigger spring. Did you do anything to yours?

Just curious I wondered if you revisited bullet jump and or powder charge with these rdf bullets trying to get more speed and accuracy, couldn't find it on channel?

In my 6 Creedmoor, 41.4 grains of imr 4451 shoots great. 3005 fps with a SD of 5 and ES of 11. And shoots .4 moa. I don't load a 6.5 Creedmoor so I don't know if it would translate.

I just don’t see any correlation between the group size and the standard deviations. Is it because of the small sample size? Or is the SD irrelevant? Great video, as usual!

I have had great luck with this stuff the 4451 that is. It shoots good in about anything I have shot it in. And I have the Caldwell chronograph and I haven't used it yet cause I didn't think it would work very good. But it looks like I should trust it more than I think

I wonder is the chamber chiller is introducing oxygen into the suppressor that needs to be burnt off causing that low velocity first shot on some of the groups, maybe you don’t get normal velocity gain with a cold suppressor?

I’ve found with 4451 you can really push it. I was loading 43gr and getting 2805fps. Grouping .47 MOA with 140 ELD

Those are the two powders I have been a able to get my hands on. H4350 is basically like a unicorn around here. I've tried some 147 eld match bullets and got the best success with 41.3 grains of IMR 4451. That's with Peterson SRP brass and remington 7.5 primers. Chrono data read 2625 Avg Velocity and 6.5 SD. Not as expensive as Lapua brass but sure seems to be just as healthy. Looking forward to more reviews! Take it easy JRB.

Johnny's Reloading Bench - Any advice on why the 6.5 creedmoor Compass bolt is so hard to open after firing? I thought it might loosen up after 100 rounds or so but it actually feels like it's gotten harder to lift and open the bolt. Not sure if any others are having the same problem. Hoping to get this figured out.

Johnny I forget if u did 140RDF & Rl26? Seem like about 48.5-49.5 Rl26 would be fast but accuracy is important too. Be Blessed brother. Thanks.

Hornadys original creedmore load for 140 grain amax was H4350 41.7 grains with fed210m primers at 2770. This area seems to be a node for most creedmores. Have you worked a ladder from here then messed with depth?

hey johnny I have been using 4451 with my rpr and 140 hornady bthp and eld-m I am getting 1/4 to 1/2 at 100 and my crono is showing 2639 this is at 40.5, this is my goto load for this gun after 41.5 everything drops off.

interesting video. It would have been interesting to see what higher charges would have done with the groups.

I agree, i've gotten good groups and lowest sd's i've ever seen at higher charges with 4451.

any interest in revisiting this round, maybe with higher IMR 4451 charges like you've been having good luck with with other rounds? I still have yet to finish my load workup with this round.

Need to try a Hornady 123 SST with hodgdon h414 powder

You definitly should try with more powder of 4451 I think that by pushing them a bit faster you could group better

Great shooting Nosler looking pretty good here! So I bought the fancy version of the WAOAW but the actual WAOAW brand was gone so I bought the other you put a link to it’s identical however grains are only in tenths! Not .01! I was a little disappointed. So if others want that .01 reading the scale I got does not read that fine. I wish I would’ve bought the 20$ and saved my money. Oh well

Someone else reported the exact same problem. I removed the link to that seller and pinned a comment in that video to warn people. I'm really sorry about that. Never would have dreamed that the other seller's scale would only do .1! Amazon has a really good return policy so maybe it's not too late to get your money back.

Interesting video as always. Hopefully the annealing gives some more live and lower sd's. I have had some horrid groups with this bullet so this really isn't a bad start. The bc is great, but the Hornady is so much more forgiving.

Have you picked up any 70gr RDF yet?

I've been a real fan of IMR4451. My pet load in a 26 inch tube is 39.9 grains under a Berger 140 hybrid. That runs about .4 MOA on the regular. About 2550fps

Where is the comparison between annealed and unannealed?

Personally, I wouldn't do an accuracy test with a Magnetospeed hanging off the end of the barrel. It'll affect barrel harmonics, so when you find a good shooting load - then take the MS off, I think you'll find the accuracy has moved. Try finding the accuracy node - then test it for velocity afterwards.

Nice vid. I'd love to see some Max load velocities. Wanting to see how close you can get to 270 ballistics. If that's even possible. Should be.

sherm dog comparing a short action round with a long action, gonna be tough to get the velocities as high when you have so much less case capacity.

jimhans1 true but I did see one channel where the guy got it to 3050 fps using 129 gr. out of a 22in. That's pretty darn close. If anyone can do it I know Johnny can. Plus I'm not looking for the exact ballistics just closer.

Has anyone had any real luck with the RDF 140. I tried them in my Bergera and I couldnt find anything that would shoot under 2"

Johnny, you have your trigger finger all the way up to the first joint on the trigger.

My Caldwell has taken a beating at the range with periodic rain and being shot with my .22 pistol. At this pace, it may not make it to my birthday when I can buy a Magnetospeed.

I can't help but notice it at least I think deserve investigation.. a lot of groups in this gun an your AR's seem to group left, right, left, right then center. I'm wondering if the way they feed is causing that.. just seems like a pattern I keep seeing. I've heard of this in AR's

I’m sorry I’m a little late on this one but have you tried Magnum primers? I’m curious if you’re not getting as consistent ignition that you could be getting.

Tyler Hartmann Alot of folks are using CCI 450 with these small flash holes. Im using CCI 250 in Hornady Brass and it cut my SD/ES in half. Stout Loads.

nc_classics _ Agreed. I haven’t played with any of the small primer pockets but Johnny is the only one I know of not using Magnum primers.

IMR 4451 shows some good promise for me. I haven't played around with it too much but it showed great SD's when firing 3 shot groups to determine max charge and all my grouos have been sub-MOA 42.3 grains of 4451 got me 2754, 2758, 2756. That shows some promising SD so ill have to explore it more and pressure signs didn't appear until 42.6 grs.

I know it is a bit more effort but I wish you would at least duplicate each test so we can eliminate any anomalies and have more accurate data.

I just bought a calldwell chronograph from Midway they had them on sale for $72. It's been awhile since I have had one. I shot the old one with a 45-70. No saving it. Reloading without one is like have a race car without a speedometer. It's going to make my videos much better. I hope my cardiologist gives me the go ahead to do stairs again. It's been a month since I have made a video. It's like having a ice cream cone and it dripping down your arm and you can't wipe it off. I have at least a dozen videos that I want to make and I can't at this time. Plus I bought some light defusers and I can't use them. I'm going high tech now.

Wow. Can't believe a tester guy wouldn't leave at least 5 of the cases un-annealed to compare against the rest (for feel, case life, sd,etc). Missed opportunity for good data.

I use imr 4451 and a 123gr eld and everyone goes in the same hole. Works well with 140s but can't get any high velocity with it. With the 123s and 44gr I get about 2900 out of a 26" barrel

RushShooting 67913 which isn't that high for a 123gr bullet, I get 2650 out of a 20" barreled 6.5 Grendel, and that's only using 30gr of powder.

It's a great powder just not seeing the velocities it should my average with the 140 match burners was 2600 out of a 26" barrel and 2450-2500 out of my 22" barrel

i got great sd/es with 42.3 gr IMR 4451 w/ the 140 ELD. Velocity was 2754 fps. In contrast, 41.5 of H4350 gets me 2780 fps. I've found 4451 to need slightly higher charges than H4350 and it takes up more case capacity but I have found great results with IMR 4451. Side note, this comparison was fired @ -4 F so temp sensitivity may have played a factor.

Not sure what effect your suppressor has on velocity. There is a well know "jet" effect when the bullet leaves the muzzle that will increase the velocity by a few feet per second compared to the actual velocity when the bullet clears the muzzle. This could be why your Caldwell read a little faster. I've noticed this on another site where a switch to a magneto speed reduced the velocities a little but you're using a suppressor and I don't know what this would do to the "jet" effect.

Confused Johnny. How come you got 2691 fps with a 142 Sierra at 42.6 gn of 4451 and only 2575, over 100 fps slower, with the 140 at 41.9 of 4451, which you said that is the max you would go to with the 140. What would you say was the difference in vel due to? Certainly no good for 1000 yds using the 140.

Watch your videos and the recoil control of your rifle. Rethink your right hand placement and trigger finger placement.

I'll admit right up front I don't know the second thing about reloading but I do know this....when someone can put 3 in one hole and total 5 shots is around 1/2 MOA at 100yds, who gives a shit about deviation?

At 100 yards the deviation in speed doesn’t matter much. But at longer ranges like 1000+ yards, 40fps could be the difference between a perfect hit and a complete miss.

why don't you guys screw the rifle barrel into a bench instead of showing us your shooting skills. Chronograph readings are probably quite accurate, but I don't trust that your shooting skills are better than a bench.

Take that stuff off the barrel and shoot!
