Michael Caine did not drive any Cars back then. He never learned how to drive and was pushed into Scenes.

It's kind of strange when he says the E-Types were bought cheap and everything was done as cheap as possible. I wish they'd bring back those days as even an E-Type Jag in that condition described would fetch around the 30 grand region today. Concourse or excellent condition, you're talking five times that amount; E-Types have sky-rocketed in price in the last 10-15 years or so. I have many classic car magazines dating from the late 90s backwards with E-Types of all models - coupe's, convertibles and those less desirable 2+2 models in the classifieds that were selling anything from 14,000 to 25,000. 25 grand today would just about get you a bare, unpainted body shell without any interior, chrome, wire wheels and so on. Ridiculous really, but that's how sought after those types of cars have become, mainly because of the recent publicity the E-Type has had with its 50th anniversary and also because we're all skint today and need some investment for the future.

I think he meant that the Jag BODIES were bought cheap. Because those cars were never affordable to average Joes in the street; A new E-Type cost just under £2,200 in the 1960s, that's about £51,000 today. Even a so-called "people's car" like the Mini cost around £2,000 new (About £46,000 today). To put that in perspective, the average wage in 1969 was about £800 per year (£13,000 today), for the lucky few, while a house on average was about £3,000 to buy, but you needed a hefty deposit up front, just like today. In 1969 if you had a good job in a bank getting around £1,300 (£21,000 today) with a family to support, an E-Type was still out of reach. Maybe you could buy a used Ford Popular, but not a new Jaguar. And even if you did buy it, how would you pay to run it? Just imagine the fuel costs! What about a shop or factory worker? They couldn't afford an E-Type on their low wages. Even though a soldier could earn £28 per week in the mid 1960s, which is about £25,000 today, that's not much to risk your life for, is it? Those cars have always been for the rich!
