5800X3D Undervolted with PBO2 Tuner (Setup Guide and Performance Testing)

Ойындар

Hello and welcome again, todays video focuses on undervolting with PBO2 Tuner to lower temps and increase performance on a 5800X3D!
I learned how to do this from Github, and they have their own tutorial on how to set it all up, heres the link: github.com/PrimeO7/How-to-und...
I used an app called OCCT for stress testing in this video, the link to download OCCT is here: www.ocbase.com/

    If you want to save the limits in the task scheduler just type those values after your core clock offset values. Lowering the limits let me keep same performance but reduced cpu temp by 20 C

    @@Beefy-Tech I reduced my PPT, TDC, EDC limits this is what helped reduce my temps. 8:54 in the arguments, you type in your curve values for each core. That is 8 values. Then you type in your PPT, TDC, EDC and then 0 (0 means don't change any of the other fields like MaxBoost Temp LImit, FIT Scalar) So for example mine looks like this -30 -30 -30 -30 -30 -30 -30 -30 95 80 100 0 PPT = 95W, TDC = 80A, EDC = 100A By reducing my PPT, TDC, EDC limits I saw almost 20C drop while gaming, no performance drop and actually hitting the 4,450 Mhz (before I woudl only hit 4,100 Mhz)

    @@MultiOlimac so it's-20mv, which stands for Millivolts. The offset changes the target voltage required to achieve a maximum frequency. Let's use the 5800x3d as an example. It's target frequency is 4.45ghz and it uses 1200millivolts (1.2volts) to achieve 4.45ghz, if you undervolt by -20, it'll use 1180mv (1.18 volts) to achieve that target frequency, while decreasing temps as a result of lower voltage.

    Tip for 5800X3D owners, if you're still getting toasty temps, you can combine an offset in the BIOS (offset of the VCORE, so FE -50mvtt) with PBO. Seeing as the absolute clockfrequency isn't very high, -30 usually isn't enough to drop the temps. So I use a -50mvtt offset, then set -15 PBO2. Dropped temps from 75 to 65 and im hitting the same 4450mhz.

That's because one core is getting to low voltage ,drops in frequency and takes all the other cores down with it , and needs to be adjusted higher in CO. Watch the video and check you do everything right . All I'm saying is there are maybe 5-10 CPUs in the world that can do -30 all core without issues !

    One thing I think you forgot to mention is when using manual PBO offset, just like with ryzen master on the 5000/7000 series, is you need to validate clocks using HWInfo or even OCCT to check “effective clocks” match your shown clock speeds. Too extreme of a undervolt with CO, will result in some or all cores not actually running at the clocks it thinks it is. OCCT and HWINFO have this reporting tool for this very reason. This is important because while the system may be stable, you’re losing performance potentially in cores that need more voltage to actually properly boost under load. It’s extremely rare that all core -25 or -30 is actually stable in the case, usually you see your best performing cores wanting more voltage to actually boost high enough in low core utilization scenarios.

  • @Beefy-Tech

    @Beefy-Tech

    I used hardware info to verify stability in OCCT bit I forgot to mention it here not realizing that it could show differently in OCCT. I have run -30 and -25 and I yet to have a crash myself, but I imagine its not like that for most people. I am hopeful that if anyone has issues with it they send me a comment so I can tell them exactly of this 😆👍

    @@Swaangin no not particularly, undervolting isn't just reducing voltages, it makes precision boost overdrive choose the same frequency at a lower voltage. Essentially, it'll run the same frequency at lower voltages, which in turn allows it to run a higher frequency at the same max voltage as before. The 5800x3d caps at 4.45ghz tho so the undervolt doesn't scale past your frequency cap. Thing is once you undervolt too much, the system slowly becomes unable to stably run the same frequency at a lower voltage, and the only time an undervolt can hurt is specifically when its unstable.

    Just tried PBO2 Tuning my 5800X3D (mobo - ASUS ROG Strix X570-F Gaming) and had the opposite effect. BIOS is alrady set to 142/95/140 and curve optimiser at -30. Running the OCCT CPU test the temps settle between 89/90.5deg and OCCT says the CPU is running at 4050ghz to 4100ghz all cores. OCCT says PPT/EDC/TDC usage is 118/81/108. Running Cinebench R23 then OCCT says CPU freq is locked in at 4300ghz. PPT/EDC/TDC settled around 112/77/121 I used PBO2 tuner to tweak PPT/EDC/TDC to 110/75/105 and ran Cinebench test again. This time CPU clock dropped to 3.9Ghz which is a 400Mhz loss. I know the 5800X3D is locked in terms of power and temp limits, so you can't really over clock it, but undervolting seems to slow down my CPU. Temps came down as well, but only by about 5deg. I have a Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler, which is supposed to be good enough. (I've tried fresh Thermal paste and made sure it is fitted correctly). Maybe I should grab an AIO water cooler? For me the results of undervolting were a small Temp reduction but also a 10% drop is CPU clock speed. I'm not sure what I need to do differently. My Mobo (ASUS ROG Strix X570-F Gaming) has a load of power settings I can mess with but I'm pretty sure I've got mine set to something reasonable.

    Thanks for the video, my 5900X can boost to 4950mhz max When I do -30 (which has been stable all day) I check OCCT and average frequencies are 4775mhz, does this mean I'm missing out on Single core speed by doing this? Reducing temps I like, but I prefer to keep my single core speed boost also.

    On a 5900x you would lose a small amount of performance when undervolting yes. It will not be incredibly significant in a game though.

    I have set PPT=120 TDC=75 EDC=115 the curve at -30 cinebench is hitting 79.8c, and lowering EDC and/or SoC VDD actually increases temps by 4c. I'm using NH-D14 so I don't know why I can't get any lower temps.

    If temps get hard stuck, most likely your cpu thermal paste application wasn't done right, or cooler isn't making contact with cpu and paste properly. I recommend you take a look at that

    Isnt it better to do this in the motherboard bios? Isnt it like a more permanent thing than letting the Windows boot and only then it will change the cpu settings?

  • @Duthjoods
    @Duthjoods9 ай бұрын

    Did not work for me at first. Apparently when you have "fast boot" enabled in BIOS the system doesn't shut down completely, so no cold boot and it won't trigger. What worked for me was setting the trigger to "At log on" instead of "At start up" ...maybe that helps someone who's struggling with this.

    Any luck getting your infinity fabric to 2000mhz? I think there needs to be a voltage bump somewhere to stabilize it, and undervolting somewhere else to bring the thermals down.

  • @Beefy-Tech

    @Beefy-Tech

    You cab stabilize it to a certain degree... but it's not very consistent on my side. For example cod runs, but it shows a Whea error 2 mins into OCCT. You can change some voltages and Power limits but generally the lower voltage a 5800x3d can run at, the more stable it runs, so 1900mhz+3800mhz ram is far more consistent overall.

    @@Beefy-Tech oh sweet, my ram’s XMP is 4000, I dialed it back to 3600 as my efforts to run my infinity fabric above 1800 have all failed, and I think I’m doing wise by running in coupled mode, even though I’m running my ram slower than it can go. My motherboard is top of the line with tons of cutting edge server grade VRM’s so I would think it should be able to squeak a bit more stability out of the 5800x3D. But after crashes at even 1900 I decided to pair down to 1800 until I get some guidance. As this is all new to me. I got 4000 memory knowing the infinity fabric was capped at 2000mhz and I wanted to max it out, so I’m very interested in how I might be able to make it work. My CPU cooler is a monster so there must be a way.
