I know I’m not the only one that has a pile of nuts and bolts sitting around, loose from their packages, lost without much hope of ever rejoining their helical herds. Usually, these little guys end up in the bucket of misfits, resurfacing only momentarily as they’re sifted. There is a solution to this quagmire of machined metal. A few years ago, I spent $30 total on a metric and SAE set of these ’thread detectives’. No complaints…they’re great little tools…but I was a fool for wasting that money.
If you have a hardware store near you that sells nuts and bolts separately in bins, why not make one? On my let’s make things channel, I designed a nut/bolt board that you can print, attach to a scrap piece of wood and drill out. Grab some two part epoxy and you’ll never have to wonder which sizes goes to what which makes resorting those lost spirals a fulfilling endeavor. Besides diameters, this board also helps sort lengths.

The boards are helpful for most every day use but the ones you bought typically come with more pitch/thread counts and I have personally found them more helpful overall. The strings are also easier to use on items you can't move (in my case finding the size I needed to thread a new shift knob onto my car). Plus accounting for the price of wood + nuts and bolts + your time the cost is about even. But still a well made template/project, and I do like that the boards can be used to measure length, plus you can add diameter gages. Love the vids 👍

You sir are a king amongst men. I have had a habit of collecting used fasteners while I am at work (corporate removals). I'm not as bad now as I once was (7kgs of loose nuts. bolts and screws in one day) as I have now shifted my attention onto castor wheels. Still this is going to help me when I spend the typical 4-6 hour each week sorting the bucket loads I have amassed.

The Helical Herd would be a good name for a band.

That assumes they are all the same thread pitch.
