56. Diet and Parkinson’s disease: “What’s brewing?”

“You are what you eat.” While this cliche is clearly an overstatement, it does emphasize the importance of a one’s diet. Our society is constantly recommending diets to help you accomplish specific goals, e.g. weight loss, improved cardiovascular health, better memory etc. Unfortunately, many of these claims are often unsubstantiated by scientific data. In this series, Dr. Tipton focuses on specific aspects of diet and reviews the current medical literature to find scientifically based information on the relationship between certain foods and Parkinson’s disease.
In this week’s video, Dr. Tipton discusses some interesting findings on one of today’s most popular beverages...coffee. A drink originally devoid of flavor intended to keep you alert has now developed into a taste beverage that often serves as the cornerstone for social gatherings as coffee shops have become a ubiquitous establishment. The increased quality and availability of coffee has led researchers to look for effects that increased consumption of this dark delight may have on our health as a whole as well as specific diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.
