What is seldom shown is the ballast. Do you line the entire bottom with bricks, or do you adjust it for even weight distribution after fitout.

Ken Irwin hi yes the ballets covers the whole of the bottom of the boat, in this case it’s blocks of concrete evenly placed over the whole boat, once fitted out you trim it as it’s called to re balance it, I bought a few bags of stone that are hidden which worked perfectly, cheers

Is it virtually impossible to adjust the ballast because of the finished floor?

Ken Irwin no you can take the floor up, but it’s best and easier to trim the boat with weights etc

Cheers Tom, you can find a few older Narrowboats where the top half is made from fiberglass but nowadays most are made from Steel..Thanks

GraphiteGray1 Designer Jim Brown once used a process for one off boats in the Pacific. The builder built an inverted 1:1 model of the hull from sand and a little cement, coated it with wax or aluminum foil, then used it as a male mold to make a hull, removing the sand when the glass hull was done. A matching top molding could also be made. I often wondered if that could be done on a one off narrowboat. Steel is probably best for bumping the stone canal walls.

So, with so little extra space on the boat, where can you hide the extra ballast?

Ken Irwin it depends how your boat is fitted out, I hid mine in the storage area of the bed base and in the pump room of the bathroom..

is the plate at the point of the hull the thrust bearing? I would have covered the two areas beside the engine and made a built in fuel tank, looks like it would hold around 100 to 150 gallons. I would make it a hybrid the engine would be a 30 to 60Kw generator propulsion would be an electric motor. it would also have a big battery bank lithium ion.

michael mooney hi the fuel tank is at the stern below the rudder, you can buy electric engines from approx £20,000.00 to expensive at the moment... we have 3 leisure batteries (we may add more) and a starter battery,

  • @OurFrenchHouseRenovation

These are Narrow Boats, a barge is a working vessel with a small cabin at the rear for the boatman and his family, the rest of the boat would be open to carry coal, etc
