A little heat and that inner race usually drops off without a press at all. Even so, it's nice to see a custom tool. Now, we just have to wish that every pressed-in bearing has the same bolt configuration....

I just done it. Both sides on a transit that was covered in mud. Driven daily by gardeners and well seized in. Not pushed in and easy to come out. Imagine transit on axle stand and trying to use this tool whilst laying on a shoulder twisting in. Ebay did me proud. 15 tonne puller and off. Then grinder to cut bearing off with 1mm cutting disc, and a clarke 10 tonne press to fit new bearing on. Could have even used the same puller to be fair and not the press. So tool cost £40 and bearing £20 ebay. Bet this tools hundreds.

All I do is... once you have the five bolts out of the bearing housing is to rotate it slightly ie blocking of the threaded holes in the carrier... then insert five long bolts from the back which when tightened evenly pushthe bearing housing and besring out . And Ive done loads. Theres always someone wanting to make money by complicating things

When separating the bearing and disc, are the original hex bolts used to fix the bearing pusher housing? the 5 in the kit are too thick to enter the tapered holes on the back of the bearing carrier bit

As for bearing races, they are brittle enough to break with a cold chisel. An don't need that puller either

  • @TheToolconnection

5 lug and 6 lug hubs will only fit into the standard payload wheel bearing. The 6 lug front hub is for vehicles with twin rear wheels but only up to 2014.

What year transit is it for? If its MK7 then just put an old spare wheel back on when its all stripped down and bash the old wheel till the bearing is out. No need for a tool.

  • @Caradonia

Andy Lasers That's what I was thinking too. You only need to remove a couple of extra nuts, which would take a nominal amount of extra time, and remove it completely from the van before pressing it out with a shop press. You can also inspect and clean it up easier off the van. A cheap press is about half the price and far more versatile. Don't really see the advantage of doing it in situ on a front wheel drive van.

The whole point of the tool is that you can remove the bearing in situ, while the hub is still fitted to the vehicle. The traditional way is to dismantle the whole lot and then use a shop press. This is a much faster solution.

Ford really was asleep at the wheel when they signed this front hub design off. This hub design was around on the eighties on Nissan cars. It was shite then, it is shite now. A whole industry of special tools grew because of this Ford hub: more money for independent workshops to fork out then passed to the customer. Pathetic.
