Interesting way to do the retainers. We'd just normally just drill a tiny hole to get leverage.

The first time i had to make a key for these (10 or so years ago) i couldn't find how to take the core out. I ended up sliding 2 shims on either side and then cutting my key deeper so the shims pass the wafer. Took nearly an hour, but i got right on the first try.

Thanks for doing this video it was interesting to see your process. I have absolutely no experience with car locks, picking them or making keys for them, however I was ask to do just that recently for a family member so I thought I would give it a try. It was a toyota Celica Gen 5 all keys lost and it was located out in the Country so no mobile service. I took a blank key toy 30 with me ( that's all the locksmith had in stock one blank) and had one chance to get it right. I had my hand tool lishi cutter and files. I incorrectly assumed that it would be the same as any other furniture wafer lock. Once I had the lock removed from the car I went about trying to cut the key, however not understanding the lock and how the wafers on each side interacted with the key. Which ones were the top which were the bottom cuts. I was out of my depth having no knowledge. I tried cutting both sides of the key for each wafer at the same time. This turned out to be my mistake. I should have just done one side first then the other. My brain was experiencing brain fog and I couldn't think my way through what I needed to do. I managed to get four of the seven cuts done but didn't want to risk stuffing up the only key, so I aborted cutting the deep cuts as I didn't know which side of the key they interacted with. Yes I learned a lot that day and learning on the go is a great way to figure things out, but I would have loved to have had just a small amount of base knowledge about the lock so that I could have understood what I needed to do. All the years of watching your channel has given me a lot of understandings, but I was all at sea that day,. I ended up getting the code from the side of the lock, had to go to the city and got a locksmith to finish cutting the key. They used the program you used to fill in the missing wafers for the ignition, as I had the door lock and the key was cut on the machine. cheers

At least you tried! If you had instacode you can input the code and actually see a picture of what the cut Key should look like. Props for trying! And when you learn that way you definitely retain the info better.

@@BoredLockpicker I really do appreciate your support and encouragement. thank you. We don't get much internet access out in the Country and there is no locksmith for 100kms. So I will be doing some residential stuff to help out the locals whenever I am up that way. Just word of mouth jobs, not going to go into business, just keep it casual. I so do enjoy locksmithing and locksport, cheers

Instead of removing wafers couldn't you use depth and space keys one at a time to get the bitting ? You have cuts 1-5 so 5 keys that wouldn't take long.

  • @BoredLockpicker

Would take 15 minutes to cut the space and depths keys (and I don’t need any more random sets of tools/keys in my van I would use less than once a year lol) but yes depth keys would work.
