33%er here. I always thought it was pretty little Shelf Queen, even if it was a pile of dog poop. I think I have a pic of it on the HDMMRC layout from years ago. (PRAYING) I sure hope I wasn't the knucklehead that glued that coupler on, let's just assume I didn't. Dust, Dirt what did you expect from the Desert, LOL. Virgina as in Virgina City and Truckee (as in Donner Pass). But you knew that, at least I think you knew that. You did a LOT of work on that little thing, but looks like it was worth it.

These are some of my favorite locomotives they were better than bachmanns 4-4-0s at the time and they can last a long time if maintained right, I have 2 working ones and a parts one

The V&T (Virginia (city) and Truckee Railroad) still operates as a tourist railroad. I think there are about 10 miles of track from Virginia City. While the original was used to move silver ore from the Comstock Lode, it now operates with several old-timey passenger coaches. If I recall, INYO is (one of) the steam locomotive(s) used along with some small diesel shunters. (probably useful when nobody wants to get up early to fire up the tea kettle. It may be a replica. Tunnels along the route have been daylighted for safety. It's been a good 30 years since I rode the line.

Yea I found that out while doing research. Now I have another summer vacation destination!!!

I have all 3 Rivarossi AHM Americans lettered for the V&T. The differences in manufacturing is quite interesting, one of them has the motor in the cab, the other two are tender drive. The name of the railroad was derived from Virginia City and the Truckee River which flows off the Sierra Nevada Mountains and through Reno, Nv. This railroad also had another American named Dayton. The V&T named their locomotives after towns along the line’s route through Nevada. IHC also imported Americans similar to the AHM/Rivarossi models, but I think the quality was kind of lacking. I wish I wish I had purchased some, just to find out. Thanks for another interesting video. I still have a soft spot for the American locomotive, the pride and craftsmanship, and beauty that the builders put into these machines was absolutely amazing.

Here in the UK, a company called AirFix Yes, the same company that makes the plastic model kits back in the mid to late 1970s early 1980s made a small line of electric locomotives and rolling stock. This locomotive was one of the ones they did with a different paint scheme. I do believe Rivarossi carried on making this loco for many years, and the other locomotives that AirFix made the moulds went to a company called Mainline, which was then brought out by Bachmann this is a great little locomotive when you find one in good condition. They are amazing. Very nice to have in a collection. Great videos you do I love them I love seeing what the American locomotives look like especially some of the vintage ones and someone from the UK they just different and beautiful all at the same time for us here in the UK . Keep up the great videos love to see them

Hi, this one looks similar to the Airfix/Bachmann loco but which I believe was a model of Jupiter. This Genoa looks very much like the General, but to many Brits all your 4-4-0 locos look very similar without seeing them side by side, great video Ron, all the best Mark

Ron my first train set was a ho Barham n Bailey 4-4-0 set giving to me in 1973 by Mom n dad. A Virginia n truckee red engine. Still have it n now will try to bring it back to life. Great job on enthusiasm n animation. Keep it up bud!! Will continue to watch n be informed n ENTERTAINED. Nothing wrong there- no 33% there or here.

Great restoration video Ron. I was inspired to drag my 4 4 0 out thinking it was a Rivarossi but instead it is a Pocher. The two models are almost identical except my Pocher [made in Italy] has an open frame motor inside the tender. It has the livery of Western & Atlantic with W.&A.R.R. on the cab sides. I will be lubing this little beast without taking it apart after watching your skills here being put to the test. Keep up the good work. 100%ter as I usually watch all your videos more than once.

Your conductive grease made me think of a product I have used a few times to lubricate wheels when I have added additional pickups. It is a conductive lubricant called Neolube No.2 and I got it from Micro-Mark. It is not a grease. In fact I put it on with a brush. To really stick, it needs a surface with some tooth, so I have sanded the backs of wheels before brushing it on. It would probably love worn surfaces like those on your little Genoa. It is almost as expensive as the stuff you use. I really enjoyed your video. It was very satisfying to watch your success.

I've had my Genoa since 1972. Some good tips. I'll also trim down all the wheel flanges to run on code 83 or 70 track; and I'll probably get a can motor from NWSL. I also have the HO Inyo, Reno, and Bowker; and O-scale AHM Reno and Genoa. They all just need some love to run right. A long time V&T fan here, too.

When flat blades go bad I like to glue fine sandpaper to them. Eventually have different grits but helps with finishing cuts like that.

Freaking DCC… my grandparents got me 3 DCC engines when I was a kid and they didn’t know, so I tried running those engines on my regular layout and eventually all 3 just burned up.

Tyco steamers are quite simple and built nice.

Great video! My late brother had a late sixties V&T that got destroyed. Then I bought a Mehano V&T in the mid nineties. Both were sketchy runners at best. Also had to do surgery to had head lights. I still have the Mehano but I haven’t run it in years.

I’ve found the original JB weld works well for putting back parts. You can also rebuild parts with JB weld and fabric. An old t shirt with some JB weld can be formed into just about anything You can also use Bondo for certain jobs

Thanks once more Ron. I have one of these engines, bought off ebay as a non runner. The motor must have had some moisture at one time as it was stuck solid with rust on the armature. I opened the can, cleaned it up and it was fine but that is not a process I would like to repeat in case the tabs break off the next time. Good luck Gordon on your repair. Just be careful for bearings that may or may not be used on the armature shaft. Open it up over a cookie sheet just in case ;-)

Another great repair video Ron I like the performance increase you gained from the aluminum shims...very good observation on your part... I've been watching your videos for a while now and I notice you never turn the screws backwards first...It helps a lot to turn them backwards...especially with the screw type thread...until you feel it click into original thread grooves...I find it helps the screws thread back into old holes much smoother and avoids that 'it's gonna break' feeling... Also I never see you use liquid plastic weld cement...You may want to try it on some of those plastic parts that break off...I've had good success with 'Micro Mark Same Stuff' Keep up the great videos.... Hello Rich, Thanks for your compliments!! I've never thought about the screw thread backwards trick. As with machine threads and being a life long Mechanic I can tell by hand tightening if the threads are crossed or not. You do make a good point with the screw threads and the soft medium of plastic. Thanks for the tip!! An Old timer mentioned the plastic weld stuff to me awhile back. I just searched the Amazon and put it in my watch list. I agree I do need some of that stuff!!

Well Ron that was quite a journey. If you really want a total CF of a time you should try to service, the Bachmann version of the 4-4-0s. Great ingenuity applied in this video. It must have been rewarding to see it run well.

@@classicmodeltrains I do know the feeling. I had one last year that I spent 5 days fettling with, off and on, and finally got it. Intermittent motor short. It even took out one of my cheap test transformers but, when it ran I was almost as happy as I was when my first son was born. LOL

Wow, what an effort! I’d never have figured that problem out, to tell the truth. I do believe I have a Genoa in my collection somewhere, but I’d be hard-pressed to lay hands on it in under an hour. Thanks for this episode. I’ll probably need it if I have trouble trying to run my Genoa if I ever find it. 33%’er out.

Try adding a little baking soda after adding CA glue to the screw post. I use the Tamiya paint stirrer spoon end. The baking soda will instant cue the CA glue & adds reenforcement to the glue joint. Shake out the excess baking soda.

I prefer your channel with DC because I like the mechanics of it. Like working on a car. DCC is very technical and not as entertaining. I have both in my collection. Folks really should master repairing DC because if your machine ain't working right, than neither will their DCC

Hey Ron there are guys now putting DCC in Lionel o scale trains. I think it’s called Blue Nami, but you have to put in a bridge rectifier

Virginia and Truckee refers to Virginia City Nevada. From what I remember, Genoa, Reno, and Inyo are all still with us, as is a sister locomotive the Dayton, also from the V&T.

@classicmodeltrains also, Rivarossi for AHM built Reno and Inyo, I don't know if they did Dayton. There were different smoke stacks, and I know under IHC after AHM went out of business, took over importing them. Under IHC, they had 4 possible smoke stacks, two possible headlights, and depending on the prototype, oil or wood fuel tenders. They also brought out a larger number of locomotives in various different Railroads.

I Had One But Something Went wrong With it It Had One Bright Light wow Looking forward On getting A Few More In Ho And N Scale.

Hello Jeff. Steamers have more moving parts, making them more of a pain when they quit. Tyco (red box and early 70's) and Mehano steamers are pretty good ones and gentle on the wallet.

Oh yeah btw thanks for this video. Ive actually have a few Rivorossi/AHM/IHC 4-4-0s that have that issue that i gave up in long ago. And i never took the time to try to figure out the problemo, Thanks man! Now im gettin those buggers down off the shelf and fixin em!

@@classicmodeltrains Hey Ron your a tyco collector right? Well did you know the tyco unloading hopper car set Virginian ,that all the metal on the bottom is made of lead? I have a few sets and they are complete and I just checked them and they are made with or out of lead. Bummer as I just bought a few still sealed . Now I don't want them. ! Every part of the underwrite even the closing bay doors are made of lead or metal with lead. I checked them with a lead test kit and it turned in like 5 seconds. Imagine how many kids in the 70s were exposed to this. I may sell them or even give them away.

@@firefly0282 I didn’t know that. I work with lead a lot. If you don’t touch it, it won’t “get you”. Really no need to get rid of them.

@@classicmodeltrains ok thanks for advice. I just kinda flipped out when I checked it with a lead detector. But yeah I've been buying alot of these tyco on auction sites and have gotten good deals. I really didn't want to get rid of them as it took me along time to find mint in sealed box tyco stuff. I guess your right . I forgot when I first started my automotive career I was busting tires at sears and handheld lead weight all the time and those fishing weights . I guess alot have used their teeth to clamp them as well. And I know why they used lead in automotive paint so I guess I shouldnt worry. Sorry I was opting on giving them away to others that weren't sceerd of lead! I guess they'll be OK running them around on track. ,!,,,! Cheers!

Another great video. I remember when i was quite new to the hobby seeing one of these on ebay and it looked so cute and cheap i bought it then cleaning it was a whole different ball game so “a sadder man but wiser now i say these words to you” (Lemon Tree) they are really tough to assemble

I did actually and it helped me graduate cussing collage 😉

I have one also and I had to shim under the weight to get mine working, just under one side.

Heck man, as for the dcc convert. Do it! Yeah others have probably done them as well but hey, they're not Ron from classic model trains. Some of us I'm sure would like to see your take on a vintage dcc conversion. So go for it. Besides I do think it may attract some new viewers that are on the fence right now and are closeted vintage train enthusiast and they just don't want their dcc friends to know! So I'm sure they're secretly wanting to see a dcc convert in an old loco. Heck I'd like to,see you dcc a tyco power torque! That would be neat! There are some articles on some websites but no good videos. At least not at your level. cheers!😊

Thanks for your input. If I can get my hands on a decoder that can handle 2 amps could do a tyco P.T.

Yes I did notice that and mentioned it in the video. The loco was only picking up with the front pilot for a long time in the vid. I have some 1880's rolling stock as well. I wished I had just a small layout for this era of railroading. Its all so small and cute. Get a lot of it in a small space. Where's my 15" radius' at? :-)

I have a Bachmann Union Pacific 119, I had no idea this design was that old and taken from Rivarossi. This one looks a little better built than the Bachmann. But the Bachmann runs sorta okay and looks great so I'm happy with it. When I bought it, it didn't run, and I troubleshot the whole running gear and it ran just fine if I just sat the tender on the tracks and had the engine lifted. But setting it down, it would die out. I realized after, like, a week, one of the leading truck wheels was installed backwards creating a direct short through them. Now it runs, but it doesn't have super great contact so its low speed performance is pretty bad. And it's a little engine so low speed is all I really want to run it. I'm gonna try setting it up so the engine provides electrical pickup too and see if that helps.

Isn't that similar to VA and Truckee? Have 2 of them. Missing a driveshaft. But nice looking engines. Another great and comical video btw. Thanks. Have few of those tender drives. Are a pain to fix though.

Could you imagine DCCing that thing. Oh the problems, and all the fun. They have to run well in DC before DCC. As always 33'/.

I agree Raymond, get them running smooth with DC before ever bothering to DCC them
