518. NEW! Updated Fluid Art Bloom Recipe & Mixing Guide!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is long overdue but I finally put together a new recipe that I'm really happy with! Great consistency, dries super clear, and the cells and lacing HOLD. If you're new to fluid art and/or the bloom technique, this is the video for you. If you're happy with your current recipe, feel free to skip the mixing tutorial and jump to this timestamp to get right to the art: 19:34. This is a 20x20 big bloom blowout and tilt, and the colors blue/green/gold was selected to test for an upcoming commission. I LOVED the blowout and composition, but am very disappointed (again) in the performance of the PPG MultiPro (the base paint). Once again it had so many air bubbles that once I was finished tilting and spinning, the bubbles pop and leave white speckles everywhere. I'm breaking up with PPG MultiPro again! I will use Color To Go (satin) in extra white until I can find a replacement. Anyway, I hope you find this video helpful and the art to your liking! Let me know what you think in the comments! xoxo K

THE RECIPE:
House Paint-base aka puddle for the substrate: PPG MultiPro in Satin from Home Depot, or Color To Go Extra White in Satin from any Sherwin Williams store.
Pouring Medium aka PM Recipe: mix with all colors EXCEPT the cell activator color:
You’ll need: Behr 8300 Untinted Deep Base Paint (Home Depot); Infinity Semi-Gloss Base C Untinted (Lowe's) and JoSonja Gloss Varnish OR Minwax Polyacrylic Gloss. I use a quart measuring cup (HD + get a lid). Mix up 12 oz. of the Behr 8300; 6 oz. of the Infinity, and 4 oz of varnish or the water-based polyacrylic to make 22 ounces of pouring medium. Stir well. NOTE: If your Behr is thin, you may not need the varnish so add a little at a time to get your desired consistency.
Use the colors and brands of your choice! These tutorials are meant to educate and inspire! Here's how to mix:
Pigments: For a 3 oz cup I add 1/2 teaspoon of pigment powder to the cup, then add enough gloss varnish (any brand; I use JoSonja gloss varnish) to cover the powder. Mix well until all pigment is thoroughly wet; then add the pouring medium; mix well. Recommend a Covid mask to mix.
For any brand fluid or high flow acrylics: I put 2 1/2 ounces of the pouring medium into a 3 ounce cup, then squirt in color until I reach my desired shade. Mix well.
For tube paint (medium or heavy body paint), I added an 1/2 ounce of paint (1/2 teaspoon) to a 3 ounce cup, then added 2 ounces of pouring medium. If still thick I add a squirt of Golden's High Flow Medium (thins and extends acrylic colors) OR water, and stir well.
Cell Activator/Color: Australian Floetrol + Amsterdam Light Gold, 2.5 -1 ratio Australian Floetrol to paint.

I love your pouring medium mixed, 🤗 I’ve used it for a while now, but I don’t know if you realize that BEHR Is no longer going to make 8300 deep base anymore. I think they’ve already can stopped making it or they will soon, they’re making it with a primer now in it, and it will not be called 8300. I don’t know how it will work going forward I will. I’ll have to check it out but you might want to investigate that or go and buy as much of the 8300 if you can before it is gone, FYI. I did call the BEHR company and they confirmed that it is true and if you’d like to give them a call to tell them about you and how you really want to keep the 8300, I would do that. And I did it but I think we should try to tell our paint pouring community that. We should all call them! This is going to be disappearing. We all need other alternatives and maybe if we all call the company they’ll keep it for us. I’m gonna keep my fingers crossed for that. I keep trying to put that information out on Facebook and they’ve blocked me, so I wanna try to tell as many people as I can, so we can stay in our happy place, in paint pouring paradise. 😮 please share. 🤗

I have tried Amsterdam gold as a cell activator without much luck. It looked like your C.A.in the video was as thick as your paints. Was I wrong?

Which paint are you disappointed in? The name and where you used it. I wish I could ask questions while you are doing it. You said you are "breaking up with this paint" what will you use in irs place.

The base house paint-PPG MultiPro. It’s always filled with micro bubbles that pop and leave speckles as the art dries. Looking for something new but in the mean time I’ll use Sherwin Williams Color To Go in Extra White. It only comes in quarts so that’s annoying too!

I don’t understand, and I’ve been now doing Dutch and other types of pours for about a year using LiquidTex pouring medium, why artists on KZread use house paint. My memory is that Jackson Pollock used house paint and it cracked. Couldn’t I just stay with even a liquitex gloss medium along with pouring medium as long as they are liquidTex or gac 800? I’ve tried finding the information out and nobody seems to respond.

The Dutch Pour is a completely different technique (and look) than a SheleeArt bloom. Dutch pours use much thinner paint, whereas the bloom technique relies on the elasticity of the house paint allowing the artist to blow, spin and tilt while keeping the integrity of the cells and lacing. Dutch pours rely on the various paint densities to get some cells, but don’t have the lacing that blooms have. It’s not inferior; it’s just a different look. Any type of paint will crack if too much is left on the substrate or if left to dry too fast. For the bloom technique, without paint underneath the puddles to be blown out, the hairdryer air won’t be able to carry the paint very far. Some artists use acrylics as a base instead of house paint, but for larger pieces house paint is practical and affordable. Hope this helps. Edited for the typos.
