The 2 boys being arrested for shoplifting in the 1900's. Fast forward 124 yrs. later, they were be astonished to discover NOTHING happens to thieves in NYC. No consequences now, at all.

In the mid 19th century in England I read a court listing that included a 6 yr old boy arrested for stealing a bread roll because he was hungry. Sentenced to death by hanging. I read that many of these harsh sentences were commuted to transportation. Knowing what life was like for the working poor back then my heart went out to that little lad.

@@helenamcginty4920 Yes, children were treated very poorly. Most were orphans and had to support themselves at a early age. They had to work 12 hrs. a day, sometimes, no protection for them from the gov't. They had the worst job. It might have been life saving to be sent to Australia. We had no child protection laws for children here in the US, either. The stealing that happens now if for economic gain, not for food.

The woman posing for the picture in Kentucky, 1890-1910. that was an incredibly long exposure, she must have been exhausted.

A few things I looked up revealed to me: The Buffalo Soldiers were regiments of black recruits into the U.S. Army. They received this nickname from the Native Americans, and they wore the name with pride, as intended. The photo of FDR is dated after he contracted polio, which left him unable to walk freely or stand easily,so the photograph is not as candid as it appears.
